    A novel converter topology for applications in smart grids: technical and economical evaluation

    Technological advances in smart grids significantly contribute to an energy sustainability paradigm, assisting to diminish harms associated with global warming. Some of the key challenges in smart grids are linked with power electronics applications for renewable energy sources (RES), electric mobility (EM), energy storage systems (ESS) and power quality (PQ). These applications for smart grids have a common feature: the requirement to use the full-controlled grid-side power converters. Thereby, this paper aims to contribute with a technical and economical evaluation about a novel topology of the grid-side power converter for applications in smart grids. In terms of technical features, the proposed converter is classified as: (a) Bidirectional, allowing a bidirectional power flow with the electrical grid; (b) Symmetrical, allowing the operation with two distinct applications in the dc-side (e.g., RES, ESS, or EM); (c) Multilevel with nine levels, allowing high levels of PQ for the grid-side. With the objective to establish an accurate case-study, throughout the paper, the technical and economical evaluation is also performed based on the comparison between the proposed topology and the conventional ones. Considering an economical evaluation, the paper presents a cost estimation study concerning the implementation costs of the proposed topology, assuming realistic conditions of operation for applications in smart grids. Based on the entire evaluation for a real operating power range, the obtained results show the operational convenience of the topology in accordance with different applications in smart grids.This work has been supported by FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia within the Project Scope: UID/CEC/00319/2019.     Smart grids as distributed learning control

    The topic of smart grids has received a lot of attention but from a scientific point of view it is a highly imprecise concept. This paper attempts to describe what could ultimately work as a control process to fulfill the aims usually stated for such grids without throwing away some important principles established by the pioneers in power system control. In modern terms, we need distributed (or multi-agent) learning control which is suggested to work with a certain consensus mechanism which appears to leave room for achieving cyber-physical security, robustness and performance goals. © 2012 IEEE.published_or_final_versio

    Dynamics estimation and generalized tuning of stationary frame current controller for grid-tied power converters

    The integration of AC-DC power converters to manage the connection of generation to the grid has increased exponentially over the last years. PV or wind generation plants are one of the main applications showing this trend. High power converters are increasingly installed for integrating the renewables in a larger scale. The control design for these converters becomes more challenging due to the reduced control bandwidth and increased complexity in the grid connection filter. A generalized and optimized control tuning approach for converters becomes more favored. This paper proposes an algorithm for estimating the dynamic performance of the stationary frame current controllers, and based on it a generalized and optimized tuning approach is developed. The experience-based specifications of the tuning inputs are not necessary through the tuning approach.     Vehicle electrification: technologies, challenges and a global perspective for smart grids

    Nowadays, due to economic and climate concerns, the private transportation sector is shifting for the vehicle electrification, mainly supported by electric and hybrid plug-in vehicles. For this new reality, new challenges about operation modes are emerging, demanding a cooperative and dynamic operation with the electrical power grid, guaranteeing a stable integration without omitting the power quality for the grid-side and for the vehicle-side. Besides the operation modes, new attractive and complementary technologies are offered by the vehicle electrification in the context of smart grids, which are valid for both on-board and off-board systems. In this perspective, this book chapter presents a global perspective and deals with challenges for the vehicle electrification, covering the key technologies toward a sustainable future. Among others, the flowing topics are covered: (1) Overview of power electronics structures for battery charging systems, including on-board and off-board systems; (2) State-of-the-art of communication technologies for application in the context of vehicular electrification, smart grids and smart homes; (3) Challenges and opportunities concerning wireless power transfer with bidirectional interface to the electrical grid; (4) Future perspectives about bidirectional power transfer between electric vehicles (vehicle-to-vehicle operation mode); (5) Unified technologies, allowing to combine functionalities of a bidirectional interface with the electrical grid and motor driver based on a single system; and (6) Smart grids and smart homes scenarios and accessible opportunities about operation modes.Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT
