Fusion of Multispectral Data Through Illumination-aware Deep Neural Networks for Pedestrian Detection
Multispectral pedestrian detection has received extensive attention in recent
years as a promising solution to facilitate robust human target detection for
around-the-clock applications (e.g. security surveillance and autonomous
driving). In this paper, we demonstrate illumination information encoded in
multispectral images can be utilized to significantly boost performance of
pedestrian detection. A novel illumination-aware weighting mechanism is present
to accurately depict illumination condition of a scene. Such illumination
information is incorporated into two-stream deep convolutional neural networks
to learn multispectral human-related features under different illumination
conditions (daytime and nighttime). Moreover, we utilized illumination
information together with multispectral data to generate more accurate semantic
segmentation which are used to boost pedestrian detection accuracy. Putting all
of the pieces together, we present a powerful framework for multispectral
pedestrian detection based on multi-task learning of illumination-aware
pedestrian detection and semantic segmentation. Our proposed method is trained
end-to-end using a well-designed multi-task loss function and outperforms
state-of-the-art approaches on KAIST multispectral pedestrian dataset
A Generative Model of People in Clothing
We present the first image-based generative model of people in clothing for
the full body. We sidestep the commonly used complex graphics rendering
pipeline and the need for high-quality 3D scans of dressed people. Instead, we
learn generative models from a large image database. The main challenge is to
cope with the high variance in human pose, shape and appearance. For this
reason, pure image-based approaches have not been considered so far. We show
that this challenge can be overcome by splitting the generating process in two
parts. First, we learn to generate a semantic segmentation of the body and
clothing. Second, we learn a conditional model on the resulting segments that
creates realistic images. The full model is differentiable and can be
conditioned on pose, shape or color. The result are samples of people in
different clothing items and styles. The proposed model can generate entirely
new people with realistic clothing. In several experiments we present
encouraging results that suggest an entirely data-driven approach to people
generation is possible
XNect: Real-time Multi-Person 3D Motion Capture with a Single RGB Camera
We present a real-time approach for multi-person 3D motion capture at over 30
fps using a single RGB camera. It operates successfully in generic scenes which
may contain occlusions by objects and by other people. Our method operates in
subsequent stages. The first stage is a convolutional neural network (CNN) that
estimates 2D and 3D pose features along with identity assignments for all
visible joints of all individuals. We contribute a new architecture for this
CNN, called SelecSLS Net, that uses novel selective long and short range skip
connections to improve the information flow allowing for a drastically faster
network without compromising accuracy. In the second stage, a fully connected
neural network turns the possibly partial (on account of occlusion) 2Dpose and
3Dpose features for each subject into a complete 3Dpose estimate per
individual. The third stage applies space-time skeletal model fitting to the
predicted 2D and 3D pose per subject to further reconcile the 2D and 3D pose,
and enforce temporal coherence. Our method returns the full skeletal pose in
joint angles for each subject. This is a further key distinction from previous
work that do not produce joint angle results of a coherent skeleton in real
time for multi-person scenes. The proposed system runs on consumer hardware at
a previously unseen speed of more than 30 fps given 512x320 images as input
while achieving state-of-the-art accuracy, which we will demonstrate on a range
of challenging real-world scenes.Comment: To appear in ACM Transactions on Graphics (SIGGRAPH) 202
Multispectral Deep Neural Networks for Pedestrian Detection
Multispectral pedestrian detection is essential for around-the-clock
applications, e.g., surveillance and autonomous driving. We deeply analyze
Faster R-CNN for multispectral pedestrian detection task and then model it into
a convolutional network (ConvNet) fusion problem. Further, we discover that
ConvNet-based pedestrian detectors trained by color or thermal images
separately provide complementary information in discriminating human instances.
Thus there is a large potential to improve pedestrian detection by using color
and thermal images in DNNs simultaneously. We carefully design four ConvNet
fusion architectures that integrate two-branch ConvNets on different DNNs
stages, all of which yield better performance compared with the baseline
detector. Our experimental results on KAIST pedestrian benchmark show that the
Halfway Fusion model that performs fusion on the middle-level convolutional
features outperforms the baseline method by 11% and yields a missing rate 3.5%
lower than the other proposed architectures.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, BMVC 2016 ora
