    An ARTMAP-incorporated Multi-Agent System for Building Intelligent Heat Management

    This paper presents an ARTMAP-incorporated multi-agent system (MAS) for building heat management, which aims to maintain the desired space temperature defined by the building occupants (thermal comfort management) and improve energy efficiency by intelligently controlling the energy flow and usage in the building (building energy control). Existing MAS typically uses rule-based approaches to describe the behaviours and the processes of its agents, and the rules are fixed. The incorporation of artificial neural network (ANN) techniques to the agents can provide for the required online learning and adaptation capabilities. A three-layer MAS is proposed for building heat management and ARTMAP is incorporated into the agents so as to facilitate online learning and adaptation capabilities. Simulation results demonstrate that ARTMAP incorporated MAS provides better (automated) energy control and thermal comfort management for a building environment in comparison to its existing rule-based MAS approach

    Applications of Agent-Based Methods in Multi-Energy Systems—A Systematic Literature Review

    The need for a greener and more sustainable energy system evokes a need for more extensive energy system transition research. The penetration of distributed energy resources and Internet of Things technologies facilitate energy system transition towards the next generation of energy system concepts. The next generation of energy system concepts include “integrated energy system”, “multi-energy system”, or “smart energy system”. These concepts reveal that future energy systems can integrate multiple energy carriers with autonomous intelligent decision making. There are noticeable trends in using the agent-based method in research of energy systems, including multi-energy system transition simulation with agent-based modeling (ABM) and multi-energy system management with multi-agent system (MAS) modeling. The need for a comprehensive review of the applications of the agent-based method motivates this review article. Thus, this article aims to systematically review the ABM and MAS applications in multi-energy systems with publications from 2007 to the end of 2021. The articles were sorted into MAS and ABM applications based on the details of agent implementations. MAS application papers in building energy systems, district energy systems, and regional energy systems are reviewed with regard to energy carriers, agent control architecture, optimization algorithms, and agent development environments. ABM application papers in behavior simulation and policy-making are reviewed with regard to the agent decision-making details and model objectives. In addition, the potential future research directions in reinforcement learning implementation and agent control synchronization are highlighted. The review shows that the agent-based method has great potential to contribute to energy transition studies with its plug-and-play ability and distributed decision-making process

    Multi Agent System to Optimize Comfort and Energy Flows in the Built Environment

    This paper discusses the control of building energy comfort management systems led by the economic movement within the energy market resulting in different prices. This new generation of building management systems focuses on the application of multi-agent systems for autonomous flexible operation of building services systems to obtain overall improvement energy efficiency and comfort. Multi-agent systems have proven to be successful in many applications to detach the timely interdependencies between systems and applications and come to a decentralize approach. In this study a multi-agent system (MAS) is developed to control and manage building services systems. A case study on an existing building system pointed out that energy consumption is reduced of a central air conditioning unit and local heating and cooling units with help of the proposed market driven multi-agent system, while maintaining comfort within the bands of user preferences. Furthermore it can be concluded that the system adapts to the dynamic changing situation and amount of momentary available resources

    Large scale deployment of Micro Grids besides the advanced metering, demand response, reliable communications infrastructure set up has been incorporated into the technological road map of the future smart power grid. To congregate the operation and control needs of distributed energy resources in Micro-Grids the Multi-Agent System (MAS) seem to have splendid features. MAS is an emerging sub-field of Distributed Artificial Intelligence that has the potential to manage the changing face of electric power grid by inculcating intelligent agents into Micro-Grids. To create agents and implement MAS a framework, a platform is obligatory where in the agents reside and operate from. There is a wide range of Multi-agent platforms available on the web like Aglet, Grasshopper, DESIRE, Jadex, ZEUS, JADE etc. Each agent platform has to be evaluated according to the some criteria that have been mentioned in this endeavor. A brief relative appraisal of an assortment of agent platforms has been provided. According to various noteworthy researches the most used platform in micro-grid applications is JADE.     Implementing Productivity Based Demand Response in Office Buildings Using Building Automation Standards

    Demand response is an effective method that can solve known issues in electrical power systems caused by peak power demand and intermittent supply from renewable sources. Office buildings are good candidates for implementing demand response because they usually incorporate building management systems which are able to control and monitor various electrical devices, from lighting to HVAC, security to power management. In order to study the feasibility of using an existing office building management system to implement demand response, a simulator for a typical office building has been built which models the energy consumption characteristics of the building. With the help of this simulator, an Indoor Environment Quality based control algorithm is developed whose aim is to minimise reduction in productivity in an office building during a demand response application. This research revealed two key elements of automatic demand response: lighting loads need to be utilised in every demand response scenario along with HVAC, and the control system needs to be able to operate rapidly because of changing conditions. A multi-agent based demand response control algorithm for lighting is then developed and used to test the suitability of two communication protocols currently widely used in office buildings: KNX and LonWorks. The results show that excessive overload of the communication channel and the lag caused by slow communication speeds using these protocols present serious problems for the implementation of real time agent based communication in office buildings. A solution to these problems is proposed
