The quantum cat map on the modular discretization of extremal black hole horizons
Based on our recent work on the discretization of the radial AdS geometry
of extremal BH horizons,we present a toy model for the chaotic unitary
evolution of infalling single particle wave packets.
We construct explicitly the eigenstates and eigenvalues for the single
particle dynamics for an observer falling into the BH horizon, with time
evolution operator the quantum Arnol'd cat map (QACM).
Using these results we investigate the validity of the eigenstate
thermalization hypothesis (ETH), as well as that of the fast scrambling time
bound (STB).
We find that the QACM, while possessing a linear spectrum, has eigenstates,
which are random and satisfy the assumptions of the ETH.
We also find that the thermalization of infalling wave packets in this
particular model is exponentially fast, thereby saturating the STB, under the
constraint that the finite dimension of the single--particle Hilbert space
takes values in the set of Fibonacci integers.Comment: 28 pages LaTeX2e, 8 jpeg figures. Clarified certain issues pertaining

Modular modelling of signalling pathways and their crosstalk
Signalling pathways are well-known abstractions that explain the mechanisms whereby cells respond to signals. Collections of pathways form networks, and interactions between pathways in a network, known as cross-talk, enables further complex signalling behaviours. While there are several formal modelling approaches for signalling pathways, none make cross-talk explicit; the aim of this paper is to define and categorise cross-talk in a rigorous way. We define a modular approach to pathway and network modelling, based on the module construct in the PRISM modelling language, and a set of generic signalling modules. Five different types of cross-talk are defined according to various biologically meaningful combinations of variable sharing, synchronisation labels and reaction renaming. The approach is illustrated with a case-study analysis of cross-talk between the TGF-β, WNT and MAPK pathways
Scaling fields in the two-dimensional abelian sandpile model
We consider the isotropic two-dimensional abelian sandpile model from a
perspective based on two-dimensional (conformal) field theory. We compute
lattice correlation functions for various cluster variables (at and off
criticality), from which we infer the field-theoretic description in the
scaling limit. We find a perfect agreement with the predictions of a c=-2
conformal field theory and its massive perturbation, thereby providing direct
evidence for conformal invariance and more generally for a description in terms
of a local field theory. The question of the height 2 variable is also
addressed, with however no definite conclusion yet.Comment: 22 pages, 1 figure (eps), uses revte
