Using protocol analysis to explore the creative requirements engineering process
Protocol analysis is an empirical method applied by researchers in cognitive psychology and behavioural analysis. Protocol analysis can be used to collect, document and analyse thought processes by an individual problem solver. In general, research subjects are asked to think aloud when performing a given task. Their verbal reports are transcribed and represent a sequence of their thoughts and cognitive activities. These verbal reports are analysed to identify relevant segments of cognitive behaviours by the research subjects. The analysis results may be cross-examined (or validated through retrospective interviews with the research subjects). This paper offers a critical analysis of this research method, its approaches to data collection and analysis, strengths and limitations, and discusses its use in information systems research. The aim is to explore the use of protocol analysis in studying the creative requirements engineering process.<br /
A Compositional Treatment of Polysemous Arguments in Categorial Grammar
We discuss an extension of the standard logical rules (functional application
and abstraction) in Categorial Grammar (CG), in order to deal with some
specific cases of polysemy. We borrow from Generative Lexicon theory which
proposes the mechanism of {\em coercion}, next to a rich nominal lexical
semantic structure called {\em qualia structure}.
In a previous paper we introduced coercion into the framework of {\em
sign-based} Categorial Grammar and investigated its impact on traditional
Fregean compositionality. In this paper we will elaborate on this idea, mostly
working towards the introduction of a new semantic dimension. Where in current
versions of sign-based Categorial Grammar only two representations are derived:
a prosodic one (form) and a logical one (modelling), here we introduce also a
more detaled representation of the lexical semantics. This extra knowledge will

A Multi-disciplinary Approach to the Investigation of Aspects of Serial Order in Cognition
Serial order processing or Sequence processing underlies many human activities such as speech, language, skill learning, planning, problem solving, etc. Investigating the\ud
neural bases of sequence processing enables us to understand serial order in cognition and helps us building intelligent devices. In the current paper, various\ud
cognitive issues related to sequence processing will be discussed with examples. Some of the issues are: distributed versus local representation, pre-wired versus\ud
adaptive origins of representation, implicit versus explicit learning, fixed/flat versus hierarchical organization, timing aspects, order information embedded in sequences, primacy versus recency in list learning and aspects of sequence perception such as recognition, recall and generation. Experimental results that give evidence for the involvement of various brain areas will be described. Finally, theoretical frameworks based on Markov models and Reinforcement Learning paradigm will be presented. These theoretical ideas are useful for studying sequential phenomena in a principled way
Multimodal imaging of human brain activity: rational, biophysical aspects and modes of integration
Until relatively recently the vast majority of imaging and electrophysiological studies of human brain activity have relied on single-modality measurements usually correlated with readily observable or experimentally modified behavioural or brain state patterns. Multi-modal imaging is the concept of bringing together observations or measurements from different instruments. We discuss the aims of multi-modal imaging and the ways in which it can be accomplished using representative applications. Given the importance of haemodynamic and electrophysiological signals in current multi-modal imaging applications, we also review some of the basic physiology relevant to understanding their relationship

Learning from experience in sustainability
This paper explores the apparent contradiction between the 'linearity' of most Sustainability Indicator (SI) projects, with defined outputs achieved in a set period of time, and an implied 'circularity' that goes with most sustainable development (SD) initiatives. Projects usually have clear parameters within which they are implemented, and the inclusion of elements such as the need for accountability, measurable impact and 'value for money' have grown in importance. Whether we like it or not, it could be argued that we live in a 'projectified' world. We suggest that one way of exploring this potential contradiction between 'linearity' and 'circularity' is to frame the project with a Kolb Learning Cycle heuristic. This will facilitate a rationalisation from those implementing the SI project as to why decisions are being made and for whom. If these questions are opened up to the project stakeholders, including beneficiaries, then the Kolb cycle could encourage learning and understanding by all involved. It is suggested that such learning should be a valid output of the SI project, although typically the focus is only upon the final list of SIs and how they feed into policy. Funders need to take a broader perspective by allowing for both within SI projects, even if learning is not a measurable or tangible outcome. These points are explored within the context of the wider literature and SI projects in Malta and Lebanon
The imaginary constitution of financial crises
This article proposes an alternative sociological framework for dealing with the imaginary constitution of financial crises. Theorisation of financial crises is often limited by dualistic juxtaposition of the rational and irrational, moral and immoral, calculative and intuitive, thus neglecting the imaginary structuring of such dyads in the construction of financial and fiscal realities. To address this lacuna, we introduce ideas from philosopher Cornelius Castoriadis, and develop a framework that unpicks the often-suppressed, mediating and generative role of imagination in finance. On the one hand, we show how dominant forms of imagination enable the financialisation of contemporary societies, serving to sustain existing debt practices and lender–debtor relationships. On the other hand, we propose a re-animated ‘sociological imagination’ that offers potential avenues for establishing alternative social visions of the future that will enable re-thinking of the nature of debt, money and financial institutions
Formal Modelling, Testing and Verification of HSA Memory Models using Event-B
The HSA Foundation has produced the HSA Platform System Architecture
Specification that goes a long way towards addressing the need for a clear and
consistent method for specifying weakly consistent memory. HSA is specified in
a natural language which makes it open to multiple ambiguous interpretations
and could render bugs in implementations of it in hardware and software. In
this paper we present a formal model of HSA which can be used in the
development and verification of both concurrent software applications as well
as in the development and verification of the HSA-compliant platform itself. We
use the Event-B language to build a provably correct hierarchy of models from
the most abstract to a detailed refinement of HSA close to implementation
level. Our memory models are general in that they represent an arbitrary number
of masters, programs and instruction interleavings. We reason about such
general models using refinements. Using Rodin tool we are able to model and
verify an entire hierarchy of models using proofs to establish that each
refinement is correct. We define an automated validation method that allows us
to test baseline compliance of the model against a suite of published HSA
litmus tests. Once we complete model validation we develop a coverage driven
method to extract a richer set of tests from the Event-B model and a user
specified coverage model. These tests are used for extensive regression testing
of hardware and software systems. Our method of refinement based formal
modelling, baseline compliance testing of the model and coverage driven test
extraction using the single language of Event-B is a new way to address a key
challenge facing the design and verification of multi-core systems.Comment: 9 pages, 10 figure
From Theory to Intervention: Mapping Theoretically Derived Behavioural Determinants to Behaviour Change Techniques
Theory provides a helpful basis for designing interventions to change behaviour but offers little guidance on how to do this. This paper aims to illustrate methods for developing an extensive list of behaviour change techniques (with definitions) and for linking techniques to theoretical constructs. A list of techniques and definitions was generated from techniques published in two systematic reviews, supplemented by "brainstorming" and a systematic search of nine textbooks used in training applied psychologists. Inter-rater reliability of extracting the techniques and definitions from the textbooks was assessed. Four experts judged which techniques would be effective in changing 11 theoretical constructs associated with behaviour change. Thirty-five techniques identified in the reviews were extended to 53 by brainstorming and to 137 by consulting textbooks. Agreement for the 53 definitions was 74.7 per cent (15.4% cells completed and 59.3% cells empty for both raters). Agreement about the link between the 35 techniques and theoretical constructs was 71.7 per cent of 385 judgments (12.2% agreement that effective and 59.5% agreement that not effective). This preliminary work demonstrates the possibility of developing a comprehensive, reliable taxonomy of techniques linked to theory.
