    Vehicle detection and tracking using homography-based plane rectification and particle filtering

    This paper presents a full system for vehicle detection and tracking in non-stationary settings based on computer vision. The method proposed for vehicle detection exploits the geometrical relations between the elements in the scene so that moving objects (i.e., vehicles) can be detected by analyzing motion parallax. Namely, the homography of the road plane between successive images is computed. Most remarkably, a novel probabilistic framework based on Kalman filtering is presented for reliable and accurate homography estimation. The estimated homography is used for image alignment, which in turn allows to detect the moving vehicles in the image. Tracking of vehicles is performed on the basis of a multidimensional particle filter, which also manages the exit and entries of objects. The filter involves a mixture likelihood model that allows a better adaptation of the particles to the observed measurements. The system is specially designed for highway environments, where it has been proven to yield excellent results

    Understanding Traffic Density from Large-Scale Web Camera Data

    Understanding traffic density from large-scale web camera (webcam) videos is a challenging problem because such videos have low spatial and temporal resolution, high occlusion and large perspective. To deeply understand traffic density, we explore both deep learning based and optimization based methods. To avoid individual vehicle detection and tracking, both methods map the image into vehicle density map, one based on rank constrained regression and the other one based on fully convolution networks (FCN). The regression based method learns different weights for different blocks in the image to increase freedom degrees of weights and embed perspective information. The FCN based method jointly estimates vehicle density map and vehicle count with a residual learning framework to perform end-to-end dense prediction, allowing arbitrary image resolution, and adapting to different vehicle scales and perspectives. We analyze and compare both methods, and get insights from optimization based method to improve deep model. Since existing datasets do not cover all the challenges in our work, we collected and labelled a large-scale traffic video dataset, containing 60 million frames from 212 webcams. Both methods are extensively evaluated and compared on different counting tasks and datasets. FCN based method significantly reduces the mean absolute error from 10.99 to 5.31 on the public dataset TRANCOS compared with the state-of-the-art baseline.Comment: Accepted by CVPR 2017.     An improved background segmentation method for ghost removals

    With ongoing research assessment in higher education and the introduction of master’s‐level work in initial teacher education, the growing need for teacher educators to develop research identities is discussed in relation to mentoring and support in two universities. Twelve interviews—with three teacher educators and three research mentors from each university—were carried out, in order to identify effective mentoring practices and other forms of support, as well as any barriers or problems encountered in developing a research profile. An innovative aspect of the methodological approach is that beginning researchers from the teacher education faculty in both universities undertook the interviewing and co‐authored the article. The need for an entitlement to and protection of research time is stressed, as well as a range of supportive practices within an active research culture.
