Cholinergic regulation of mood: from basic and clinical studies to emerging therapeutics.
Mood disorders are highly prevalent and are the leading cause of disability worldwide. The neurobiological mechanisms underlying depression remain poorly understood, although theories regarding dysfunction within various neurotransmitter systems have been postulated. Over 50 years ago, clinical studies suggested that increases in central acetylcholine could lead to depressed mood. Evidence has continued to accumulate suggesting that the cholinergic system has a important role in mood regulation. In particular, the finding that the antimuscarinic agent, scopolamine, exerts fast-onset and sustained antidepressant effects in depressed humans has led to a renewal of interest in the cholinergic system as an important player in the neurochemistry of major depression and bipolar disorder. Here, we synthesize current knowledge regarding the modulation of mood by the central cholinergic system, drawing upon studies from human postmortem brain, neuroimaging, and drug challenge investigations, as well as animal model studies. First, we describe an illustrative series of early discoveries which suggest a role for acetylcholine in the pathophysiology of mood disorders. Then, we discuss more recent studies conducted in humans and/or animals which have identified roles for both acetylcholinergic muscarinic and nicotinic receptors in different mood states, and as targets for novel therapies
Motivational Interviewing Impact on Cardiovascular Disease
abstract: Harm reduction in cardiovascular disease is a significant problem worldwide. Providers, families, and healthcare agencies are feeling the burdens imparted by these diseases. Not to mention missed days of work and caregiver strain, the losses are insurmountable. Motivational interviewing (MI) is gaining momentum as a method of stimulating change through intrinsic motivation by resolving ambivalence toward change (Ma, Zhou, Zhou, & Huang, 2014). If practitioners can find methods of educating the public in a culturally-appropriate and sensitive manner, and if they can work with community stakeholders to organize our resources to make them more accessible to the people, we may find that simple lifestyle changes can lead to risk reduction of cardiovascular diseases. By working with our community leaders and identifying barriers unique to each population, we can make positive impacts on a wide range of issues that markedly impact our healthcare systems
Computational Evidence that Self-regulation of Creativity is Good for Society
Excess individual creativity can be detrimental to society because creators
invest in unproven ideas at the expense of propagating proven ones. Moreover, a
proportion of individuals can benefit from creativity without being creative
themselves by copying creators. We hypothesized that (1) societies increase
their rate of cultural evolution by tempering the novelty-generating effects of
creativity with the novelty-preserving effects of imitation, and (2) this is
carried out by selectively rewarding and punishing creativity according to the
value of the individuals' creative outputs. We tested this using an agent-based
model of cultural evolution in which each agent self-regulated its
invention-to-imitation ratio as a function of the fitness of its cultural
outputs. In self-regulating societies, agents segregated into creators and
imitators. The mean fitness of cultural outputs was higher than in
non-self-regulating societies, and changes in diversity were rapider and more
pronounced. We discuss limitations and possible social implications of our

Tracking Foodborne Pathogens from Farm to Table: Data Needs to Evaluate Control Options
Food safety policymakers and scientists came together at a conference in January 1995 to evaluate data available for analyzing control of foodborne microbial pathogens. This proceedings starts with data regarding human illnesses associated with foodborne pathogens and moves backwards in the food chain to examine pathogen data in the processing sector and at the farm level. Of special concern is the inability to link pathogen data throughout the food chain. Analytical tools to evaluate the impact of changing production and consumption practices on foodborne disease risks and their economic consequences are presented. The available data are examined to see how well they meet current analytical needs to support policy analysis.
