Blood glucose monitoring is a primary tool for the care of diabetic patients. At present, there is no noninvasive monitoring technique of blood glucose concentration that is widely accepted in the medical industry. New noninvasive measurement techniques are being investigated. This work focuses on the possibility of a monitor that noninvasively measures blood glucose levels using electromagnetic waves. The technique is based on relating a monitoring antenna’s resonant frequency to the permittivity, and conductivity of skin, which in turn, is related to the glucose levels. This becomes a hot researched field in recent years. Different types of antennas (wideband and narrowband) have been designed, constructed, and tested in free space. An analytical model for the antenna has been developed, which has been validated with simulations. Microstrip antenna is one of the most common planar antenna structures used. Extensive research development aimed at exploiting its advantages such as lightweight, low cost, conformal configurations, and compatibility with integrated circuits have been carried out. Rectangular and circular patches are the basic shapes that are the most commonly used in microstrip antennas. Ideally, the dielectric constant εr, however, and other performance requirements may dictate the use of substrate whose dielectric constant can be greater. As in our prototype blood sensor, the miniaturized size is one of the main challenges

This research work assumes the role of designing a Micro-strip patch antenna that exists with in the band range of 402 MHz to 405 MHz, which was considered as medical implantable communication systems (MICS) band and can be possibly implanted at human body phantom model because of its flexiblility and lower radiation characteristics. CST Microwave studio was used for designing the patch antenna and the human body phantom model with the existence of homogeneous layers (fat, skin and muscle) and the final version was fabricated. Being highly flexible, FR4 was chosen as a substrate to maintain 0.5 mm thickness throughout. For the ground and patch, copper material was selected having thickness of 0.018 mm. For the ease of fabrication and biocompatibility, silicon was selected with the thickness of being 8 mm. Maximum specific absorption rate of the proposed antenna was obtained 0.588 W/Kg for 10g tissue. Various Parameters such as VSWR, S11, Radiation efficiency, Total efficiency were found 1.1889, -21.28 dB, -45.71 dB, -45.74 dB respectively inside body phantom that ensure the antenna design was efficiently and effectively suitable for biotelemetry system which is body implantable. After fabrication the value of S11 is found -12.43 dB in open space with 453 MHz frequency

Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in Western society. Recent technological advances have opened the opportunity of developing new and innovative smart stent devices that have advanced electrical properties that can improve diagnosis and even treatment of previously intractable conditions, such as central line access failure, atherosclerosis and reporting on vascular grafts for renal dialysis. Here we review the latest advances in the field of cardiovascular medical implants, providing a broad overview of the application of their use in the context of cardiovascular disease rather than an in-depth analysis of the current state of the art. We cover their powering, communication and the challenges faced in their fabrication. We focus specifically on those devices required to maintain vascular access such as ones used to treat arterial disease, a major source of heart attacks and strokes. We look forward to advances in these technologies in the future and their implementation to improve the human condition

Wireless Body Area Networks allow the interconnection between independent nodes located either inside or over the body skin or further. Regarding in-body communications, establishing a proper link with a capsule endoscope or with a pacemaker are examples of technological advances achieved in the last decades. In spite of these healthcare developments, current standards for these kind of communications do not allow high data rate wireless connections, which are common in the current telecommunication services. UWB systems have emerged as a potential solution for future wireless in-body communications. Nevertheless, the main drawback of UWB for in-body applications is the high attenuation of human body tissues which increases dramatically with the increment of frequency. Hence, an accurate UWB in-body channel characterization is relevant in order validate UWB frequency band as the best candidate for future networks of implantable nodes. This thesis is devoted to test UWB technology for in-body communications from an experimental point of view. To achieve this goal, a novel spatial phantom-based measurement setup is used in several in-body propagation scenarios. Thus, the losses in the propagation medium and the channel diversity are checked in a reliable way. In order to check the values obtained in laboratory, they are compared and discussed with those obtained in an in vivo experiment. On the other hand, new UWB antenna candidates for inbody communications are designed and manufactured by using typical and new miniaturization and antenna optimization techniques for this purpose. Finally, diversity-based techniques are used to improve the performance of the propagation channel in two different in-body scenarios. In this study, a fully implantable neural stimulator that is designed to stimulate the brain in the small animal is described. Electrical stimulation of the small animal is applicable to pre-clinical study, and behavior study for neuroscience research, etc. Especially, behavior study of the freely moving animal is useful to observe the modulation of sensory and motor functions by the stimulation. It involves conditioning animal's movement response through directional neural stimulation on the region of interest. The main technique that enables such applications is the development of an implantable neural stimulator. Implantable neural stimulator is used to modulate the behavior of the animal, while it ensures the free movement of the animals. Therefore, stable operation in vivo and device size are important issues in the design of implantable neural stimulators. Conventional neural stimulators for brain stimulation of small animal are comprised of electrodes implanted in the brain and a pulse generation circuit mounted on the back of the animal. The electrical stimulation generated from the circuit is conveyed to the target region by the electrodes wire-connected with the circuit. The devices are powered by a large battery, and controlled by a microcontroller unit. While it represents a simple approach, it is subject to various potential risks including short operation time, infection at the wound, mechanical failure of the device, and animals being hindered to move naturally, etc. A neural stimulator that is miniaturized, fully implantable, low-powered, and capable of wireless communication is required. In this dissertation, a fully implantable stimulator with remote controllability, compact size, and minimal power consumption is suggested for freely moving animal application. The stimulator consists of modular units of surface-type and depth-type arrays for accessing target brain area, package for accommodating the stimulating electronics all of which are assembled after independent fabrication and implantation using customized flat cables and connectors. The electronics in the package contains ZigBee telemetry for low-power wireless communication, inductive link for recharging lithium battery, and an ASIC that generates biphasic pulse for neural stimulation. A dual-mode power-saving scheme with a duty cycling was applied to minimize the power consumption. All modules were packaged using liquid crystal polymer (LCP) to avoid any chemical reaction after implantation. To evaluate the fabricated stimulator, wireless operation test was conducted. Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) of the ZigBee telemetry were measured, and its communication range and data streaming capacity were tested. The amount of power delivered during the charging session depending on the coil distance was measured. After the evaluation of the device functionality, the stimulator was implanted into rats to train the animals to turn to the left (or right) following a directional cue applied to the barrel cortex. Functionality of the device was also demonstrated in a three-dimensional maze structure, by guiding the rats to navigate better in the maze. Finally, several aspects of the fabricated device were discussed further. Chapter 1 : Introduction 1 1.1. The Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm is currently highly demanded in multiple scenarios and in particular plays an important role in solving medical-related challenges. RF and microwave technologies, coupled with wireless energy transfer, are interesting candidates because of their inherent contactless spectrometric capabilities and for the wireless transmission of sensing data. This article reviews some recent achievements in the field of wearable sensors, highlighting the benefits that these solutions introduce in operative contexts, such as indoor localization and microwave sensing. Wireless power transfer is an essential requirement to be fulfilled to allow these sensors to be not only wearable but also compact and lightweight while avoiding bulky batteries. Flexible materials and 3D printing polymers, as well as daily garments, are widely exploited within the presented solutions, allowing comfort and wearability without renouncing the robustness and reliability of the built-in wearable sensor
