Adverse effects of Interbank funds on bank efficiency: evidence from Turkish banking sector
This paper investigates the relationship between interbank funds and efficiencies is for the commercial banks operating in Turkey between 2001-2006. Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is executed to find the efficiency scores of the banks for each year, and fixed effects panel data regression is carried out, with the efficiency scores being the response variable. It is observed that interbank
funds (ratio) has negative effects on bank efficiency, while bank capitalization and loan ratio have positive, and profitability has insignificant effects. Our study serves as an illustrative evidence that interbank funds can have adverse effects in an emerging market
Efficient Database Generation for Data-driven Security Assessment of Power Systems
Power system security assessment methods require large datasets of operating
points to train or test their performance. As historical data often contain
limited number of abnormal situations, simulation data are necessary to
accurately determine the security boundary. Generating such a database is an
extremely demanding task, which becomes intractable even for small system
sizes. This paper proposes a modular and highly scalable algorithm for
computationally efficient database generation. Using convex relaxation
techniques and complex network theory, we discard large infeasible regions and
drastically reduce the search space. We explore the remaining space by a highly
parallelizable algorithm and substantially decrease computation time. Our
method accommodates numerous definitions of power system security. Here we
focus on the combination of N-k security and small-signal stability.
Demonstrating our algorithm on IEEE 14-bus and NESTA 162-bus systems, we show
how it outperforms existing approaches requiring less than 10% of the time

A real time Pegasus propulsion system model for VSTOL piloted simulation evaluation
A real time propulsion system modeling technique suitable for use in man-in-the-loop simulator studies was developd. This technique provides the system accuracy, stability, and transient response required for integrated aircraft and propulsion control system studies. A Pegasus-Harrier propulsion system was selected as a baseline for developing mathematical modeling and simulation techniques for VSTOL. Initially, static and dynamic propulsion system characteristics were modeled in detail to form a nonlinear aerothermodynamic digital computer simulation of a Pegasus engine. From this high fidelity simulation, a real time propulsion model was formulated by applying a piece-wise linear state variable methodology. A hydromechanical and water injection control system was also simulated. The real time dynamic model includes the detail and flexibility required for the evaluation of critical control parameters and propulsion component limits over a limited flight envelope. Average Rate of Downlink Heterogeneous Cellular Networks over Generalized Fading Channels - A Stochastic Geometry Approach
In this paper, we introduce an analytical framework to compute the average
rate of downlink heterogeneous cellular networks. The framework leverages
recent application of stochastic geometry to other-cell interference modeling
and analysis. The heterogeneous cellular network is modeled as the
superposition of many tiers of Base Stations (BSs) having different transmit
power, density, path-loss exponent, fading parameters and distribution, and
unequal biasing for flexible tier association. A long-term averaged maximum
biased-received-power tier association is considered. The positions of the BSs
in each tier are modeled as points of an independent Poisson Point Process
(PPP). Under these assumptions, we introduce a new analytical methodology to
evaluate the average rate, which avoids the computation of the Coverage
Probability (Pcov) and needs only the Moment Generating Function (MGF) of the
aggregate interference at the probe mobile terminal. The distinguishable
characteristic of our analytical methodology consists in providing a tractable
and numerically efficient framework that is applicable to general fading
distributions, including composite fading channels with small- and mid-scale
fluctuations. In addition, our method can efficiently handle correlated
Log-Normal shadowing with little increase of the computational complexity. The
proposed MGF-based approach needs the computation of either a single or a
two-fold numerical integral, thus reducing the complexity of Pcov-based
frameworks, which require, for general fading distributions, the computation of

Effect of model selection on combustor performance and stability predictions using ROCCID
The ROCket Combustor Interactive Design (ROCCID) methodology is an interactive computer program that combines previously developed combustion analysis models to calculate the combustion performance and stability of liquid rocket engines. Test data from 213 kN (48,000 lbf) Liquid Oxygen (LOX)/RP-1 combustor with an O-F-O (oxidizer-fuel-oxidizer) triplet injector were used to characterize the predictive capabilities of the ROCCID analysis models for this injector/propellant configuration. Thirteen combustion performance and stability models were incorporated into ROCCID, and ten of them, which have options for triplet injectors, were examined. Calculations using different combinations of analysis models, with little or no anchoring, were carried out on a test matrix of operating combinations matching those of the test program. Results of the computer analyses were compared to test data, and the ability of the model combinations to correctly predict combustion stability or instability was determined. For the best model combination(s), sensitivity of the calculations to fuel drop size and mixing efficiency was examined. Error in the stability calculations due to uncertainty in the pressure interaction index (N) was examined. The Strategy of the Commons: Modelling the Annual Cost of Successful ICT Services for European Research
The provision of ICT services for research is increasingly using Cloud services to complement the traditional federation of computing centres. Due to the complex funding structure and differences in the basic business model, comparing the cost-effectiveness of these options requires a new approach to cost assessment. This paper presents a cost assessment method addressing the limitations of the standard methods and some of the initial results of the study. This acts as an illustration of the kind of cost assessment issues high-utilisation rate ICT services should consider when choosing between different infrastructure options. The impact of regulatory reforms on cost structure, ownership and competition in Indian banking
This paper evaluates the impact of financial sector reforms on the cost structure characteristics and on the ownership–cost efficiency relationship in Indian banking. It also examines the impact of reforms on the dynamics of competition in the lending market. We find evidence that deregulation improves banks performance and fosters competition in the lending market. Results suggest technological progress, once Indian commercial banks have adjusted to the new regulatory environment. This, however, does not translate in efficiency gains. There is also evidence of an ownership effect on the level and pattern of efficiency change. Finally, competition keeps building pace even in the re-regulation period and technological improvements are not hampered by the tightening of prudential norms
