    In digital video indexing research area an important technique is called shot boundary detection which automatically segments long video material into camera shots using content-based analysis of video. We have been working on developing various shot boundary detection and representative frame selection techniques to automatically index encoded video stream and provide the end users with video browsing/navigation feature. In this paper we describe a demonstrator digital video system that allows the user to record a TV broadcast programme to MPEG-1 file format and to easily browse and playback the file content online. The system incorporates the shot boundary detection and representative frame selection techniques we have developed and has become a full-featured digital video system that not only demonstrates any further techniques we will develop, but also obtains users’ video browsing behaviour. At the moment the system has a real-user base of about a hundred people and we are closely monitoring how they use the video browsing/navigation feature which the system provides

    Evaluation of automatic shot boundary detection on a large video test suite

    The challenge facing the indexing of digital video information in order to support browsing and retrieval by users, is to design systems that can accurately and automatically process large amounts of heterogeneous video. The segmentation of video material into shots and scenes is the basic operation in the analysis of video content. This paper presents a detailed evaluation of a histogram-based shot cut detector based on eight hours of TV broadcast video. Our observations are that the selection of similarity thresholds for determining shot boundaries in such broadcast video is difficult and necessitates the development of systems that employ adaptive thresholding in order to address the huge variation of characteristics prevalent in TV broadcast video

    Evaluating and combining digital video shot boundary detection algorithms

    The development of standards for video encoding coupled with the increased power of computing mean that content-based manipulation of digital video information is now feasible. Shots are a basic structural building block of digital video and the boundaries between shots need to be determined automatically to allow for content-based manipulation. A shot can be thought of as continuous images from one camera at a time. In this paper we examine a variety of automatic techniques for shot boundary detection that we have implemented and evaluated on a baseline of 720,000 frames (8 hours) of broadcast television. This extends our previous work on evaluating a single technique based on comparing colour histograms. A description of each of our three methods currently working is given along with how they are evaluated. It is found that although the different methods have about the same order of magnitude in terms of effectiveness, different shot boundaries are detected by the different methods. We then look at combining the three shot boundary detection methods to produce one output result and the benefits in accuracy and performance that this brought to our system. Each of the methods were changed from using a static threshold value for three unconnected methods to one using three dynamic threshold values for one connected method. In a final summing up we look at the future directions for this work

    Automatic summarization of rushes video using bipartite graphs

    In this paper we present a new approach for automatic summarization of rushes video. Our approach is composed of three main steps. First, based on a temporal segmentation, we filter sub-shots with low information content not likely to be useful in a summary. Second, a method using maximal matching in a bipartite graph is adapted to measure similarity between the remaining shots and to minimize inter-shot redundancy by removing repetitive retake shots common in rushes content. Finally, the presence of faces and the motion intensity are characterised in each sub-shot. A measure of how representative the sub-shot is in the context of the overall video is then proposed. Video summaries composed of keyframe slideshows are then generated. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of this approach we re-run the evaluation carried out by the TREC, using the same dataset and evaluation metrics used in the TRECVID video summarization task in 2007 but with our own assessors. Results show that our approach leads to a significant improvement in terms of the fraction of the TRECVID summary ground truth included and is competitive with other approaches in TRECVID 2007

    Shot boundary detection in MPEG videos using local and global indicators

    Shot boundary detection (SBD) plays important roles in many video applications. In this letter, we describe a novel method on SBD operating directly in the compressed domain. First, several local indicators are extracted from MPEG macroblocks, and AdaBoost is employed for feature selection and fusion. The selected features are then used in classifying candidate cuts into five sub-spaces via pre-filtering and rule-based decision making. Following that, global indicators of frame similarity between boundary frames of cut candidates are examined using phase correlation of dc images. Gradual transitions like fade, dissolve, and combined shot cuts are also identified.     A system for event-based film browsing

    The recent past has seen a proliferation in the amount of digital video content being created and consumed. This is perhaps being driven by the increase in audiovisual quality, as well as the ease with which production, reproduction and consumption is now possible. The widespread use of digital video, as opposed its analogue counterpart, has opened up a plethora of previously impossible applications. This paper builds upon previous work that analysed digital video, namely movies, in order to facilitate presentation in an easily navigable manner. A film browsing interface, termed the MovieBrowser, is described, which allows users to easily locate specific portions of movies, as well as to obtain an understanding of the filming being perused. A number of experiments which assess the system’s performance are also presented

    We describe the video summarisation systems submitted by Dublin City University to the TRECVid 2008 BBC Rushes Summarisation task. We introduce a new approach to re- dundant video summarisation based on principal component analysis and linear discriminant analysis. The resulting low dimensional representation of each shot offers a simple way to compare and select representative shots of the original video. The final summary is constructed as a dynamic sto- ryboard. Both types of summaries were evaluated and the results are discussed

    Event detection in field sports video using audio-visual features and a support vector machine

    In this paper, we propose a novel audio-visual feature-based framework for event detection in broadcast video of multiple different field sports. Features indicating significant events are selected and robust detectors built. These features are rooted in characteristics common to all genres of field sports. The evidence gathered by the feature detectors is combined by means of a support vector machine, which infers the occurrence of an event based on a model generated during a training phase. The system is tested generically across multiple genres of field sports including soccer, rugby, hockey, and Gaelic football and the results suggest that high event retrieval and content rejection statistics are achievable

    Modelling of content-aware indicators for effective determination of shot boundaries in compressed MPEG videos

    In this paper, a content-aware approach is proposed to design multiple test conditions for shot cut detection, which are organized into a multiple phase decision tree for abrupt cut detection and a finite state machine for dissolve detection. In comparison with existing approaches, our algorithm is characterized with two categories of content difference indicators and testing. While the first category indicates the content changes that are directly used for shot cut detection, the second category indicates the contexts under which the content change occurs. As a result, indications of frame differences are tested with context awareness to make the detection of shot cuts adaptive to both content and context changes. Evaluations announced by TRECVID 2007 indicate that our proposed algorithm achieved comparable performance to those using machine learning approaches, yet using a simpler feature set and straightforward design strategies. This has validated the effectiveness of modelling of content-aware indicators for decision making, which also provides a good alternative to conventional approaches in this topic
