Massive MIMO Performance - TDD Versus FDD: What Do Measurements Say?

Downlink beamforming in Massive MIMO either relies on uplink pilot measurements - exploiting reciprocity and TDD operation, or on the use of a predetermined grid of beams with user equipments reporting their preferred beams, mostly in FDD operation. Massive MIMO in its originally conceived form uses the first strategy, with uplink pilots, whereas there is currently significant commercial interest in the second, grid-of-beams. It has been analytically shown that in isotropic scattering (independent Rayleigh fading) the first approach outperforms the second. Nevertheless there remains controversy regarding their relative performance in practice. In this contribution, the performances of these two strategies are compared using measured channel data at 2.6 GHz.Comment: Submitted to IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications, 31/Mar/201

Standards are needed to enable cooperation while promoting competition. Within the framework of a standard, the companies involved in the standardization process contribute and agree on appropriate technical specifications to ensure diversity and compatibility, and facilitate worldwide commercial deployment and evolution. Those parts of the system that can create competitive advantages are intentionally left open in the specifications. Such specifications are extensive, complex, and minimalistic. This makes telecommunication standards education a difficult endeavor, but it is much demanded by industry and governments to spur economic growth. This article describes a methodology for teaching wireless communications standards. We define our methodology around six learning stages that assimilate the standardization process and identify key learning objectives for each. Enabled by software-defined radio technology, we describe a practical learning environment that facilitates developing many of the needed technical and soft skills without the inherent difficulty and cost associated with radio frequency components and regulation. Using only open source software and commercial of-the-shelf computers, this environment is portable and can easily be recreated at other educational institutions and adapted to their educational needs and constraints. We discuss our and our students' experiences when employing the proposed methodology to 4G LTE standard education at Barcelona Tech.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Prediction of performance of the DVB-SH system relying on mutual information

DVB-SH (Digital Video Broadcasting-Satellite Handled) is a broadcasting standard dedicated to hybrid broadcasting systems combining a satellite and a terrestrial part. On the satellite part, dedicated interleaving and time slicing mechanisms are proposed to mitigate the effects of Land Mobile Satellite (LMS) channel, based on a convolutional interleaver. Depending on the parameters of this interleaver, this mechanism enables to split in time a codeword on duration from 100 ms to about 30s. This mechanism signi?cantly improves the error recovery performance of the code but in literature, exact evaluation at system level of this improvement is missing. The objective of this paper is to propose a prediction method compatible with fast simulations, to quantitatively evaluate the system performance in terms of Packet Error Rate (PER). The main dif?culty is to evaluate the decoding probability of a codeword submitted to several levels of attenuation. The method we propose consists in using as metric the Mutual Information (MI) between coded bit at the emitter side and the received symbol. It is shown that, by averaging the MI over the codeword and by using the decoding performance function g such that PER=g(MI)determined on the Gaussian channel, we can signi?cantly improve the precision of the prediction compared to the two other methods based on SNR and Bit Error Rate (BER). We evaluated these methods on three arti?cial channels where each codeword is transmitted with three or four different levels of attenuations. The prediction error of the SNR-based (resp. the input BER-based) method varies from 0.5 to 1.7 dB (resp. from 0.7 to 1.2 dB) instead of the MI-based method achieves a precision in the order of 0.1 dB in the three cases. We then evaluate this method on real LMS channels with various DVB-SH interleavers and show that the instantaneous PER can also be predicted with high accuracy

De Bruijn Structured Illumination Studying Within The Task Of Restoring Hands Relief

    Get PDF
In the course of studies on the problem of restoring hands relief, using the de Bruijn structured illumination, methods of solving this problem are proposed. This is a method of simple quantitative detection of Hough segments on the skin of the hand, a method of qualitative visual evaluation of the effectiveness of the color palette using the dominant color, and a method of the weight coefficients of the components of the color palette. The proposed methods make it possible to quantitatively determine the optimal choice of the color scheme for generating the de Bruijn bands when illumination of the hand, to restore its relief. The work describes the stages of this study, led from visual observation to a full quantitative calculation of the quality of calibration illuminations, with the possibility of their optimal choice. In the course of experiments and observations, the requirements for the technical support of research were developed to achieve the best quality of the images of the hands. Also, the paper presents a high-speed de Bruijn sequence generating algorithm using Lyndon's words, which excludes the search for Euler chains or Hamiltonian cycles, for various kinds of de Bruijn graphs. With its help, the generation of structured light patterns with various color schemes was carried out, with the purpose of further analysis of their use in 3D reconstruction systems of hands

A brief description of the Loran-C system is presented with a suggested receiver based on a standard AM-FM integrated circuit chip. Construction details of the Mini-L Loran-C prototype front-end are considered. The Mini-L system was bench tested for approximately 500 hours under a variety of reception conditions. The Mini-L concept combined with a microprocessor system is a promising approach to the development of truly low-cost Loran-C receivers for the marine and airborne user

On the Queueing Behavior of Random Codes over a Gilbert-Elliot Erasure Channel

This paper considers the queueing performance of a system that transmits coded data over a time-varying erasure channel. In our model, the queue length and channel state together form a Markov chain that depends on the system parameters. This gives a framework that allows a rigorous analysis of the queue as a function of the code rate. Most prior work in this area either ignores block-length (e.g., fluid models) or assumes error-free communication using finite codes. This work enables one to determine when such assumptions provide good, or bad, approximations of true behavior. Moreover, it offers a new approach to optimize parameters and evaluate performance. This can be valuable for delay-sensitive systems that employ short block lengths.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, conferenc
