    HTTP Mailbox - Asynchronous RESTful Communication

    We describe HTTP Mailbox, a mechanism to enable RESTful HTTP communication in an asynchronous mode with a full range of HTTP methods otherwise unavailable to standard clients and servers. HTTP Mailbox allows for broadcast and multicast semantics via HTTP. We evaluate a reference implementation using ApacheBench (a server stress testing tool) demonstrating high throughput (on 1,000 concurrent requests) and a systemic error rate of 0.01%.     MusA: Using Indoor Positioning and Navigation to Enhance Cultural Experiences in a museum

    In recent years there has been a growing interest into the use of multimedia mobile guides in museum environments. Mobile devices have the capabilities to detect the user context and to provide pieces of information suitable to help visitors discovering and following the logical and emotional connections that develop during the visit. In this scenario, location based services (LBS) currently represent an asset, and the choice of the technology to determine users' position, combined with the definition of methods that can effectively convey information, become key issues in the design process. In this work, we present MusA (Museum Assistant), a general framework for the development of multimedia interactive guides for mobile devices. Its main feature is a vision-based indoor positioning system that allows the provision of several LBS, from way-finding to the contextualized communication of cultural contents, aimed at providing a meaningful exploration of exhibits according to visitors' personal interest and curiosity. Starting from the thorough description of the system architecture, the article presents the implementation of two mobile guides, developed to respectively address adults and children, and discusses the evaluation of the user experience and the visitors' appreciation of these application

    Custom Windows Patching Methodology - Comparative Analysis

    Windows Server Update Services has been a common mainstay among organizations with a heavy footprint of Windows operating systems since it was originally released as Software Update Services in 2002. While the product has grown in scope, the primary allure remains the same: WSUS offers organizations greater control over the patches that are released to their environment and saves bandwidth by allowing a centralized device to download and offer patches to internal clients rather than having each of those clients download the content they require from the Internet. Unfortunately, the product has a structural limitation in that it lacks the capacity to provide high-availability to the metadata synchronization process that must occur in order to deliver the most up-to-date patches to endpoints. WSUS metadata contains details about the individual updates, EULAs, and supersedence relationships. Due to design limitations and the growing concern of outages, a solution was developed to supplement and perhaps replace WSUS in certain scenarios. This solution, dubbed the Custom Patching Manager (CPM), is an extension of a concept originally started by Alejandro GĂłmez Galindo and finds middle-ground between Windows Server Update Services and Windows Update using freely available software. The solution assesses the vulnerabilities of a system or systems, determines whether or not the patches are part of an approved list, determines whether or not the content for missing updates is available locally, acquires that content depending on the previous step, and applies the patches to the endpoint. This proof-of-concept proved functional and reliable but would benefit from some optimizations that have been recommended as future works

    Component-aware Orchestration of Cloud-based Enterprise Applications, from TOSCA to Docker and Kubernetes

    Enterprise IT is currently facing the challenge of coordinating the management of complex, multi-component applications across heterogeneous cloud platforms. Containers and container orchestrators provide a valuable solution to deploy multi-component applications over cloud platforms, by coupling the lifecycle of each application component to that of its hosting container. We hereby propose a solution for going beyond such a coupling, based on the OASIS standard TOSCA and on Docker. We indeed propose a novel approach for deploying multi-component applications on top of existing container orchestrators, which allows to manage each component independently from the container used to run it. We also present prototype tools implementing our approach, and we show how we effectively exploited them to carry out a concrete case study

    Efficient Change Management of XML Documents

    XML-based documents play a major role in modern information architectures and their corresponding work-flows. In this context, the ability to identify and represent differences between two versions of a document is essential. A second important aspect is the merging of document versions, which becomes crucial in parallel editing processes. Many different approaches exist that meet these challenges. Most rely on operational transformation or document annotation. In both approaches, the operations leading to changes are tracked, which requires corresponding editing applications. In the context of software development, however, a state-based approach is common. Here, document versions are compared and merged using external tools, called diff and patch. This allows users for freely editing documents without being tightened to special tools. Approaches exist that are able to compare XML documents. A corresponding merge capability is still not available. In this thesis, I present a comprehensive framework that allows for comparing and merging of XML documents using a state-based approach. Its design is based on an analysis of XML documents and their modification patterns. The heart of the framework is a context-oriented delta model. I present a diff algorithm that appears to be highly efficient in terms of speed and delta quality. The patch algorithm is able to merge document versions efficiently and reliably. The efficiency and the reliability of my approach are verified using a competitive test scenario

    JUpdate: A JSON Update Language

    Although JSON documents are being used in several emerging applications (e.g., Big Data applications, IoT, mobile computing, smart cities, and online social networks), there is no consensual or standard language for updating JSON documents (i.e., creating, deleting or changing such documents, where changing means inserting, deleting, replacing, copying, moving, etc., portions of data in such documents). To fill this gap, we propose in this paper an SQL-like language, named JUpdate, for updating JSON documents. JUpdate is based on a set of six primitive update operations, which is proven complete and minimal, and it provides a set of fourteen user-friendly high-level operations with a well-founded semantics defined on the basis of the primitive update operations
