Realization of the stiffness matrix of statically indeterminate trusses and 20 bar sensitivity penalty method using Mathcad

This paper examines the stiffness matrix of two-dimensional statically indeterminate truss structures.  Using Mathcad, a stiffness matrix analysis of a truss problem is completed as a template for other sorts of problems.  This allows learners to understand the stiffness matrix theory and rapidly acquire the basic concepts of analysis theory.  As is shown in the example, the transformation of the matrix is apparent and the overall structure of the stiffness matrix can be easily constructed.  Unknown reactions and member forces caused by unknown displacement were calculated as well.  In addition, the problem of the 20 bar boundary condition sensitivity penalty method explained in the example 2 for structure analysis.  Although this process is difficult to acquire due to complex procedures, it is beneficial for students because they can check for errors using Mathcad. Keywords: truss, stiffness matrix, Mathcad, penalty method, structure analysis  &nbsp

Territorial approach to increased energy consumption of water extraction from depletion of a Highlands Mexican aquifer

    Get PDF
This work proposes a method to estimate increased energy consumption of pumping caused by a drawdown of groundwater level and the equivalent energy consumption of the motor-pump system in an aquifer under intensive exploitation. This method has been applied to the Valley of Toluca aquifer, located in the Mexican highlands, whose intensive exploitation is reflected in a decline in the groundwater level of between 0.10 and 1.6 m/year. Results provide a summary of energy consumption and a map of energy consumption isopleths showing the areas that are most susceptible to increases in energy consumption due to pumping. The proposed method can be used to estimate the effect of the intensive exploitation of the Valley of Toluca aquifer on the energy consumption of groundwater extraction. Finding reveals that, for the year 2006, groundwater extraction in the urban zone required 2.39 times more energy than the conditions observed 38 years earlier. In monetary terms, this reflects an increase of USD$ 3 million annually, according to 2005 energy production costs

Analytical Expressions of the Coefficient of Energy Losses in Diameter Reduction Devices on Forced Regime

Analytical expressions of the energy loss coefficient for abrupt and gradual diameter reduction devices, operating in ducts on forced regime are obtained. For this approach, a state of the art was carried out where it was identified that the traditionally utilized methods (that assess the loss of the devices) needed formulas, tables and/or graphs when estimating the K coefficient. These results were used asdata in multiple linear regression methods until a representative equation for each case study was obtained. These equations constitue a reliable tool to determine the loss of the K coefficient without having to manipulate tables and graphs

Numerical analysis of the speed profiles of a water flow through a gradual reduction pipe

The objective of this research work is to understand the behavior of water flow through gradual contraction. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is a useful approach to solve the equations that describe the movement of fluids, using numerical methods and computational techniques. This area of mechanics provides the fundamentals of pipe hydraulics and channel hydraulics. A study of the flow through the pipeline has been made to calculate the children in the changes of the geometry. The energy losses derived from the pipes. Calculation of the cases: the occurrences of the incidents in the geometry on the part of the student and also with the help of the ANSYS software fluently. Calculations were used using the K-epsilon model. This simulation provides the values of pressure, velocity and kinetic turbulence in several sections of the pipe where water is its flow
