A storage and access architecture for efficient query processing in spatial database systems
Due to the high complexity of objects and queries and also due to extremely
large data volumes, geographic database systems impose stringent requirements on their
storage and access architecture with respect to efficient query processing. Performance
improving concepts such as spatial storage and access structures, approximations, object
decompositions and multi-phase query processing have been suggested and analyzed as
single building blocks. In this paper, we describe a storage and access architecture which
is composed from the above building blocks in a modular fashion. Additionally, we incorporate
into our architecture a new ingredient, the scene organization, for efficiently
supporting set-oriented access of large-area region queries. An experimental performance
comparison demonstrates that the concept of scene organization leads to considerable
performance improvements for large-area region queries by a factor of up to 150
Power Systems Monitoring and Control using Telecom Network Management Standards
Historically, different solutions have been developed for power systems control and telecommunications network management environments. The former was characterized by proprietary solutions, while the latter has been involved for years in a strong standardization process guided by criteria of openness. Today, power systems control standardization is in progress, but it is at an early stage compared to the telecommunications management area, especially in terms of information modeling. Today, control equipment tends to exhibit more computational power, and communication lines have increased their performance. These trends hint at some conceptual convergence between power systems and telecommunications networks from a management perspective. This convergence leads us to suggest the application of well-established telecommunications management standards for power systems control. This paper shows that this is a real medium-to-long term possibility
Exploiting Traffic Balancing and Multicast Efficiency in Distributed Video-on-Demand Architectures
Distributed Video-on-Demand (DVoD) systems are proposed as a
solution to the limited streaming capacity and null scalability of centralized
systems. In a previous work, we proposed a fully distributed large-scale VoD
architecture, called Double P-Tree, which has shown itself to be a good approach
to the design of flexible and scalable DVoD systems. In this paper, we
present relevant design aspects related to video mapping and traffic balancing in
order to improve Double P-Tree architecture performance. Our simulation results
demonstrate that these techniques yield a more efficient system and considerably
increase its streaming capacity. The results also show the crucial importance
of topology connectivity in improving multicasting performance in
DVoD systems. Finally, a comparison among several DVoD architectures was
performed using simulation, and the results show that the Double P-Tree architecture
incorporating mapping and load balancing policies outperforms similar

XRound : A reversible template language and its application in model-based security analysis
Successful analysis of the models used in Model-Driven Development requires the ability to synthesise the results of analysis and automatically integrate these results with the models themselves. This paper presents a reversible template language called XRound which supports round-trip transformations between models and the logic used to encode system properties. A template processor that supports the language is described, and the use of the template language is illustrated by its application in an analysis workbench, designed to support analysis of security properties of UML and MOF-based models. As a result of using reversible templates, it is possible to seamlessly and automatically integrate the results of a security analysis with a model. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved
AMaÏoSâAbstract Machine for Xcerpt
Web query languages promise convenient and efficient access
to Web data such as XML, RDF, or Topic Maps. Xcerpt is one such Web
query language with strong emphasis on novel high-level constructs for
effective and convenient query authoring, particularly tailored to versatile
access to data in different Web formats such as XML or RDF.
However, so far it lacks an efficient implementation to supplement the
convenient language features. AMaÏoS is an abstract machine implementation
for Xcerpt that aims at efficiency and ease of deployment. It
strictly separates compilation and execution of queries: Queries are compiled
once to abstract machine code that consists in (1) a code segment
with instructions for evaluating each rule and (2) a hint segment that
provides the abstract machine with optimization hints derived by the
query compilation. This article summarizes the motivation and principles
behind AMaÏoS and discusses how its current architecture realizes
these principles
Analysis domain model for shared virtual environments
The field of shared virtual environments, which also
encompasses online games and social 3D environments, has a
system landscape consisting of multiple solutions that share great functional overlap. However, there is little system interoperability between the different solutions. A shared virtual environment has an associated problem domain that is highly complex raising difficult challenges to the development process, starting with the architectural design of the underlying system. This paper has two main contributions. The first contribution is a broad domain analysis of shared virtual environments, which enables developers to have a better understanding of the whole rather than the part(s). The second contribution is a reference domain model for discussing and describing solutions - the Analysis Domain Model

Arcadia, a software development environment research project
The research objectives of the Arcadia project are two-fold: discovery and development of environment architecture principles and creation of novel software development tools, particularly powerful analysis tools, which will function within an environment built upon these architectural principles.Work in the architecture area is concerned with providing the framework to support integration while also supporting the often conflicting goal of extensibility. Thus, this area of research is directed toward achieving external integration by providing a consistent, uniform user interface, while still admitting customization and addition of new tools and interface functions. In an effort to also attain internal integration, research is aimed at developing mechanisms for structuring and managing the tools and data objects that populate a software development environment, while facilitating the insertion of new kinds of tools and new classes of objects.The unifying theme of work in the tools area is support for effective analysis at every stage of a software development project. Research is directed toward tools suitable for analyzing pre-implementation descriptions of software, software itself, and towards the production of testing and debugging tools. In many cases, these tools are specifically tailored for applicability to concurrent, distributed, or real-time software systems.The initial focus of Arcadia research is on creating a prototype environment, embodying the architectural principles, which supports Ada1 software development. This prototype environment is itself being developed in Ada.Arcadia is being developed by a consortium of researchers from the University of California at Irvine, the University of Colorado at Boulder, the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, TRW, Incremental Systems Corporation, and The Aerospace Corporation. This paper delineates the research objectives and describes the approaches being taken, the organization of the research endeavor, and current status of the work
