    Efficient implementation of the Hardy-Ramanujan-Rademacher formula

    We describe how the Hardy-Ramanujan-Rademacher formula can be implemented to allow the partition function p(n)p(n) to be computed with softly optimal complexity O(n1/2+o(1))O(n^{1/2+o(1)}) and very little overhead. A new implementation based on these techniques achieves speedups in excess of a factor 500 over previously published software and has been used by the author to calculate p(1019)p(10^{19}), an exponent twice as large as in previously reported computations. We also investigate performance for multi-evaluation of p(n)p(n), where our implementation of the Hardy-Ramanujan-Rademacher formula becomes superior to power series methods on far denser sets of indices than previous implementations. As an application, we determine over 22 billion new congruences for the partition function, extending Weaver's tabulation of 76,065 congruences.Comment: updated version containing an unconditional complexity proof; accepted for publication in LMS Journal of Computation and Mathematic

    Implementation of a real time Hough transform using FPGA technology

    This thesis is concerned with the modelling, design and implementation of efficient architectures for performing the Hough Transform (HT) on mega-pixel resolution real-time images using Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) technology. Although the HT has been around for many years and a number of algorithms have been developed it still remains a significant bottleneck in many image processing applications. Even though, the basic idea of the HT is to locate curves in an image that can be parameterized: e.g. straight lines, polynomials or circles, in a suitable parameter space, the research presented in this thesis will focus only on location of straight lines on binary images. The HT algorithm uses an accumulator array (accumulator bins) to detect the existence of a straight line on an image. As the image needs to be binarized, a novel generic synchronization circuit for windowing operations was designed to perform edge detection. An edge detection method of special interest, the canny method, is used and the design and implementation of it in hardware is achieved in this thesis. As each image pixel can be implemented independently, parallel processing can be performed. However, the main disadvantage of the HT is the large storage and computational requirements. This thesis presents new and state-of-the-art hardware implementations for the minimization of the computational cost, using the Hybrid-Logarithmic Number System (Hybrid-LNS) for calculating the HT for fixed bit-width architectures. It is shown that using the Hybrid-LNS the computational cost is minimized, while the precision of the HT algorithm is maintained. Advances in FPGA technology now make it possible to implement functions as the HT in reconfigurable fabrics.     Fast, area-efficient 32-bit LNS for computer arithmetic operations

    PhD ThesisThe logarithmic number system has been proposed as an alternative to floating-point. Multiplication, division and square-root operations are accomplished with fixedpoint arithmetic, but addition and subtraction are considerably more challenging. Recent work has demonstrated that these operations too can be done with similar speed and accuracy to their floating-point equivalents, but the necessary circuitry is complex. In particular, it is dominated by the need for large lookup tables for the storage of a non-linear function. This thesis describes the architectures required to implement a newly design approach for producing fast and area-efficient 32-bit LNS arithmetic unit. The designs are structured based on two different algorithms. At first, a new cotransformation procedure is introduced in the singularity region whilst performing subtractions in which the technique capable to generate less total storage than the cotransformation method in the previous LNS architecture. Secondly, improvement to an existing interpolation process is proposed, that also reduce the total tables to an extent that allows their easy synthesis in logic. Consequently, the total delays in the system can be significantly reduced. According to the comparison analysis with previous best LNS design and floating-point units, it is shown that the new LNS architecture capable to offer significantly better in speed while sustaining its accuracy within floating-point limit.     Performance Analysis of Hardware/Software Co-Design of Matrix Solvers

    Solving a system of linear and nonlinear equations lies at the heart of many scientific and engineering applications such as circuit simulation, applications in electric power networks, and structural analysis. The exponentially increasing complexity of these computing applications and the high cost of supercomputing force us to explore affordable high performance computing platforms. The ultimate goal of this research is to develop hardware friendly parallel processing algorithms and build cost effective high performance parallel systems using hardware in order to enable the solution of large linear systems. In this thesis, FPGA-based general hardware architectures of selected iterative methods and direct methods are discussed. Xilinx Embedded Development Kit (EDK) hardware/software (HW/SW) codesigns of these methods are also presented. For iterative methods, FPGA based hardware architectures of Jacobi, combined Jacobi and Gauss-Seidel, and conjugate gradient (CG) are proposed. The convergence analysis of the LNS-based Jacobi processor demonstrates to what extent the hardware resource constraints and additional conversion error affect the convergence of Jacobi iterative method. Matlab simulations were performed to compare the performance of three iterative methods in three ways, i.e., number of iterations for any given tolerance, number of iterations for different matrix sizes, and computation time for different matrix sizes. The simulation results indicate that the key to a fast implementation of the three methods is a fast implementation of matrix multiplication. The simulation results also show that CG method takes less number of iterations for any given tolerance, but more computation time as matrix size increases compared to other two methods, since matrix-vector multiplication is a more dominant factor in CG method than in the other two methods. By implementing matrix multiplications of the three methods in hardware with Xilinx EDK HW/SW codesign, the performance is significantly improved over pure software Power PC (PPC) based implementation. The EDK implementation results show that CG takes less computation time for any size of matrices compared to other two methods in HW/SW codesign, due to that fact that matrix multiplications dominate the computation time of all three methods while CG requires less number of iterations to converge compared to other two methods. For direct methods, FPGA-based general hardware architecture and Xilinx EDK HW/SW codesign of WZ factorization are presented. Single unit and scalable hardware architectures of WZ factorization are proposed and analyzed under different constraints. The results of Matlab simulations show that WZ runs faster than the LU on parallel processors but slower on a single processor. The simulation results also indicate that the most time consuming part of WZ factorization is matrix update. By implementing the matrix update of WZ factorization in hardware with Xilinx EDK HW/SW codesign, the performance is also apparently improved over PPC based pure software implementation

    Power-Aware Design Methodologies for FPGA-Based Implementation of Video Processing Systems

    The increasing capacity and capabilities of FPGA devices in recent years provide an attractive option for performance-hungry applications in the image and video processing domain. FPGA devices are often used as implementation platforms for image and video processing algorithms for real-time applications due to their programmable structure that can exploit inherent spatial and temporal parallelism. While performance and area remain as two main design criteria, power consumption has become an important design goal especially for mobile devices. Reduction in power consumption can be achieved by reducing the supply voltage, capacitances, clock frequency and switching activities in a circuit. Switching activities can be reduced by architectural optimization of the processing cores such as adders, multipliers, multiply and accumulators (MACS), etc. This dissertation research focuses on reducing the switching activities in digital circuits by considering data dependencies in bit level, word level and block level neighborhoods in a video frame. The bit level data neighborhood dependency consideration for power reduction is illustrated in the design of pipelined array, Booth and log-based multipliers. For an array multiplier, operands of the multipliers are partitioned into higher and lower parts so that the probability of the higher order parts being zero or one increases. The gating technique for the pipelined approach deactivates part(s) of the multiplier when the above special values are detected. For the Booth multiplier, the partitioning and gating technique is integrated into the Booth recoding scheme. In addition, a delay correction strategy is developed for the Booth multiplier to reduce the switching activities of the sign extension part in the partial products. A novel architecture design for the computation of log and inverse-log functions for the reduction of power consumption in arithmetic circuits is also presented. This also utilizes the proposed partitioning and gating technique for further dynamic power reduction by reducing the switching activities. The word level and block level data dependencies for reducing the dynamic power consumption are illustrated by presenting the design of a 2-D convolution architecture. Here the similarities of the neighboring pixels in window-based operations of image and video processing algorithms are considered for reduced switching activities. A partitioning and detection mechanism is developed to deactivate the parallel architecture for window-based operations if higher order parts of the pixel values are the same. A neighborhood dependent approach (NDA) is incorporated with different window buffering schemes. Consideration of the symmetry property in filter kernels is also applied with the NDA method for further reduction of switching activities. The proposed design methodologies are implemented and evaluated in a FPGA environment. It is observed that the dynamic power consumption in FPGA-based circuit implementations is significantly reduced in bit level, data level and block level architectures when compared to state-of-the-art design techniques. A specific application for the design of a real-time video processing system incorporating the proposed design methodologies for low power consumption is also presented. An image enhancement application is considered and the proposed partitioning and gating, and NDA methods are utilized in the design of the enhancement system. Experimental results show that the proposed multi-level power aware methodology achieves considerable power reduction.     TransPimLib: A Library for Efficient Transcendental Functions on Processing-in-Memory Systems

    Processing-in-memory (PIM) promises to alleviate the data movement bottleneck in modern computing systems. However, current real-world PIM systems have the inherent disadvantage that their hardware is more constrained than in conventional processors (CPU, GPU), due to the difficulty and cost of building processing elements near or inside the memory. As a result, general-purpose PIM architectures support fairly limited instruction sets and struggle to execute complex operations such as transcendental functions and other hard-to-calculate operations (e.g., square root). These operations are particularly important for some modern workloads, e.g., activation functions in machine learning applications. In order to provide support for transcendental (and other hard-to-calculate) functions in general-purpose PIM systems, we present \emph{TransPimLib}, a library that provides CORDIC-based and LUT-based methods for trigonometric functions, hyperbolic functions, exponentiation, logarithm, square root, etc. We develop an implementation of TransPimLib for the UPMEM PIM architecture and perform a thorough evaluation of TransPimLib's methods in terms of performance and accuracy, using microbenchmarks and three full workloads (Blackscholes, Sigmoid, Softmax).     Layered architecture for quantum computing

    We develop a layered quantum computer architecture, which is a systematic framework for tackling the individual challenges of developing a quantum computer while constructing a cohesive device design. We discuss many of the prominent techniques for implementing circuit-model quantum computing and introduce several new methods, with an emphasis on employing surface code quantum error correction. In doing so, we propose a new quantum computer architecture based on optical control of quantum dots. The timescales of physical hardware operations and logical, error-corrected quantum gates differ by several orders of magnitude. By dividing functionality into layers, we can design and analyze subsystems independently, demonstrating the value of our layered architectural approach. Using this concrete hardware platform, we provide resource analysis for executing fault-tolerant quantum algorithms for integer factoring and quantum simulation, finding that the quantum dot architecture we study could solve such problems on the timescale of days.Comment: 27 pages, 20 figure
