Resource Allocation for Delay Differentiated Traffic in Multiuser OFDM Systems
Most existing work on adaptive allocation of subcarriers and power in
multiuser orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems has focused
on homogeneous traffic consisting solely of either delay-constrained data
(guaranteed service) or non-delay-constrained data (best-effort service). In
this paper, we investigate the resource allocation problem in a heterogeneous
multiuser OFDM system with both delay-constrained (DC) and
non-delay-constrained (NDC) traffic. The objective is to maximize the sum-rate
of all the users with NDC traffic while maintaining guaranteed rates for the
users with DC traffic under a total transmit power constraint. Through our
analysis we show that the optimal power allocation over subcarriers follows a
multi-level water-filling principle; moreover, the valid candidates competing
for each subcarrier include only one NDC user but all DC users. By converting
this combinatorial problem with exponential complexity into a convex problem or
showing that it can be solved in the dual domain, efficient iterative
algorithms are proposed to find the optimal solutions. To further reduce the
computational cost, a low-complexity suboptimal algorithm is also developed.
Numerical studies are conducted to evaluate the performance the proposed
algorithms in terms of service outage probability, achievable transmission rate
pairs for DC and NDC traffic, and multiuser diversity.Comment: 29 pages, 8 figures, submitted to IEEE Transactions on Wireless

Multiuser MIMO-OFDM Systems using Subcarrier Hopping
Recently space division multiple access (SDMA) assisted multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems invoking multiuser detection (MUD) techniques have attracted substantial research interest, which is capable of exploiting both transmitter multiplexing gain and receiver diversity gain. A new scheme referred to here as slowsubcarrierhopping (SSCH) assisted multiuser SDMA-OFDM, is proposed. It is shown that, with the aid of the so-called uniform SSCH (USSCH) pattern, the multiuser interference (MUI) experienced by the high-throughput SDMA-OFDM system can be effectively suppressed, resulting in a significant performance improvement. In the investigations conducted, the proposed USSCH-aided SDMA-OFDM system was capable of outperforming a range of SDMA-OFDM systems considered, including the conventional SDMA-OFDM system dispensing with the employment of frequency-hopping techniques. For example, at an Eb/N0 value of 12 dB, the proposed USSCH/SDMA-OFDM system reduced the bit error ratio (BER) by about three orders of magnitude, in comparison to the conventional SDMA-OFDM system, while maintaining a similar computational complexity
Multiuser MIMO-OFDM for Next-Generation Wireless Systems
This overview portrays the 40-year evolution of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) research. The amelioration of powerful multicarrier OFDM arrangements with multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems has numerous benefits, which are detailed in this treatise. We continue by highlighting the limitations of conventional detection and channel estimation techniques designed for multiuser MIMO OFDM systems in the so-called rank-deficient scenarios, where the number of users supported or the number of transmit antennas employed exceeds the number of receiver antennas. This is often encountered in practice, unless we limit the number of users granted access in the base station’s or radio port’s coverage area. Following a historical perspective on the associated design problems and their state-of-the-art solutions, the second half of this treatise details a range of classic multiuser detectors (MUDs) designed for MIMO-OFDM systems and characterizes their achievable performance. A further section aims for identifying novel cutting-edge genetic algorithm (GA)-aided detector solutions, which have found numerous applications in wireless communications in recent years. In an effort to stimulate the cross pollination of ideas across the machine learning, optimization, signal processing, and wireless communications research communities, we will review the broadly applicable principles of various GA-assisted optimization techniques, which were recently proposed also for employment inmultiuser MIMO OFDM. In order to stimulate new research, we demonstrate that the family of GA-aided MUDs is capable of achieving a near-optimum performance at the cost of a significantly lower computational complexity than that imposed by their optimum maximum-likelihood (ML) MUD aided counterparts. The paper is concluded by outlining a range of future research options that may find their way into next-generation wireless systems
Energy-Efficient Resource Allocation in Multiuser OFDM Systems with Wireless Information and Power Transfer
In this paper, we study the resource allocation algorithm design for
multiuser orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) downlink systems
with simultaneous wireless information and power transfer. The algorithm design
is formulated as a non-convex optimization problem for maximizing the energy
efficiency of data transmission (bit/Joule delivered to the users). In
particular, the problem formulation takes into account the minimum required
system data rate, heterogeneous minimum required power transfers to the users,
and the circuit power consumption. Subsequently, by exploiting the method of
time-sharing and the properties of nonlinear fractional programming, the
considered non-convex optimization problem is solved using an efficient
iterative resource allocation algorithm. For each iteration, the optimal power
allocation and user selection solution are derived based on Lagrange dual
decomposition. Simulation results illustrate that the proposed iterative
resource allocation algorithm achieves the maximum energy efficiency of the
system and reveal how energy efficiency, system capacity, and wireless power
transfer benefit from the presence of multiple users in the system.Comment: 6 pages. The paper has been accepted for publication at the IEEE

Subcarrier and Power Allocation for LDS-OFDM System
Low Density Signature-Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (LDS-OFDM) has been introduced recently as an efficient multiple access technique. In this paper, we focus on the subcarrier and power allocation scheme for uplink LDS-OFDM system. Since the resource allocation problem is not convex due to the discrete nature of subcarrier allocation, the complexity of finding the optimal solutions is extremely high. We propose a heuristic subcarrier and power allocation algorithm to maximize the weighted sum-rate. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can significantly increase the spectral efficiency of the system. Furthermore, it is shown that LDS-OFDM system can achieve an outage probability much less than that for OFDMA system
