A Robust Maximum Likelihood Scheme for PSS Detection and Integer Frequency Offset Recovery in LTE Systems
Before establishing a communication link in a cellular network, the user terminal must activate a synchronization procedure called initial cell search in order to acquire specific information about the serving base station. To accomplish this task, the primary synchronization signal (PSS) and secondary synchronization signal (SSS) are periodically transmitted in the downlink of a long term evolution (LTE) network. Since SSS detection can be performed only after successful identification of the primary signal, in this work, we present a novel algorithm for joint PSS detection, sector index identification, and integer frequency offset (IFO) recovery in an LTE system. The proposed scheme relies on the maximum likelihood (ML) estimation criterion and exploits a suitable reduced-rank representation of the channel frequency response, which proves robust against multipath distortions and residual timing errors. We show that a number of PSS detection methods that were originally introduced through heuristic reasoning can be derived from our ML framework by simply selecting an appropriate model for the channel gains over the PSS subcarriers. Numerical simulations indicate that the proposed scheme can be effectively applied in the presence of severe multipath propagation, where existing alternatives provide unsatisfactory performance

A novel concept of bounded H∞ synchronization is proposed to handle the time-varying nature of the complex networks. Such a concept captures the transient behavior of the time-varying complex network over a finite horizon, where the degree of
bounded synchronization is quantified in terms of the H∞-norm. A general sector-like nonlinear function is employed to describe
the nonlinearities existing in the network. By utilizing a timevarying real-valued function and the Kronecker product, criteria
are established that ensure the bounded H∞ synchronization in terms of a set of recursive linear matrix inequalities (RLMIs),
where the RLMIs can be computed recursively by employing available MATLAB toolboxes. The bounded H∞ state estimation problem is then studied for the same complex network, where
the purpose is to design a state estimator to estimate the network states through available output measurements such that, over a finite horizon, the dynamics of the estimation error is guaranteed to be bounded with a given disturbance attenuation level. Again, an RLMI approach is developed for the state estimation problem. Finally, two simulation examples are exploited to show the
effectiveness of the results derived in this paper. This work was supported in part by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council of U.K. under Grant GR/S27658/01, the National Natural Science Foundation of China under Grant 61028008 and Grant 60974030, the National 973 Program of China under Grant 2009CB320600, the International Science and Technology Cooperation Project of China under Grant 2009DFA32050, and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation of Germany
Energy-Efficient Power Control for Contention-Based Synchronization in OFDMA Systems with Discrete Powers and Limited Feedback
This work derives a distributed and iterative algorithm by which mobile
terminals can selfishly control their transmit powers during the
synchronization procedure specified by the IEEE 802.16m and the 3GPP-LTE
standards for orthogonal frequency-division multiple-access technologies. The
proposed solution aims at maximizing the energy efficiency of the network and
is derived on the basis of a finite noncooperative game in which the players
have discrete action sets of transmit powers. The set of Nash equilibria of the
game is investigated, and a distributed power control algorithm is proposed to
achieve synchronization in an energy-efficient manner under the assumption that
the feedback from the base station is limited. Numerical results show that the
proposed solution improves the energy efficiency as well as the timing
estimation accuracy of the network compared to existing alternatives, while
requiring a reasonable amount of information to be exchanged on the return
channel
An OFDM Signal Identification Method for Wireless Communications Systems
Distinction of OFDM signals from single carrier signals is highly important
for adaptive receiver algorithms and signal identification applications. OFDM
signals exhibit Gaussian characteristics in time domain and fourth order
cumulants of Gaussian distributed signals vanish in contrary to the cumulants
of other signals. Thus fourth order cumulants can be utilized for OFDM signal
identification. In this paper, first, formulations of the estimates of the
fourth order cumulants for OFDM signals are provided. Then it is shown these
estimates are affected significantly from the wireless channel impairments,
frequency offset, phase offset and sampling mismatch. To overcome these
problems, a general chi-square constant false alarm rate Gaussianity test which
employs estimates of cumulants and their covariances is adapted to the specific
case of wireless OFDM signals. Estimation of the covariance matrix of the
fourth order cumulants are greatly simplified peculiar to the OFDM signals. A
measurement setup is developed to analyze the performance of the identification
method and for comparison purposes. A parametric measurement analysis is
provided depending on modulation order, signal to noise ratio, number of
symbols, and degree of freedom of the underlying test. The proposed method
outperforms statistical tests which are based on fixed thresholds or empirical
values, while a priori information requirement and complexity of the proposed
method are lower than the coherent identification techniques
Initial Access in 5G mm-Wave Cellular Networks
The massive amounts of bandwidth available at millimeter-wave frequencies
(roughly above 10 GHz) have the potential to greatly increase the capacity of
fifth generation cellular wireless systems. However, to overcome the high
isotropic pathloss experienced at these frequencies, high directionality will
be required at both the base station and the mobile user equipment to establish
sufficient link budget in wide area networks. This reliance on directionality
has important implications for control layer procedures. Initial access in
particular can be significantly delayed due to the need for the base station
and the user to find the proper alignment for directional transmission and
reception. This paper provides a survey of several recently proposed techniques
for this purpose. A coverage and delay analysis is performed to compare various
techniques including exhaustive and iterative search, and Context Information
based algorithms. We show that the best strategy depends on the target SNR
regime, and provide guidelines to characterize the optimal choice as a function
of the system parameters.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 3 tables, 15 references, submitted to IEEE COMMAG
