1-Bit Massive MIMO Downlink Based on Constructive Interference
In this paper, we focus on the multiuser massive multiple-input single-output
(MISO) downlink with low-cost 1-bit digital-to-analog converters (DACs) for PSK
modulation, and propose a low-complexity refinement process that is applicable
to any existing 1-bit precoding approaches based on the constructive
interference (CI) formulation. With the decomposition of the signals along the
detection thresholds, we first formulate a simple symbol-scaling method as the
performance metric. The low-complexity refinement approach is subsequently
introduced, where we aim to improve the introduced symbol-scaling performance
metric by modifying the transmit signal on one antenna at a time. Numerical
results validate the effectiveness of the proposed refinement method on
existing approaches for massive MIMO with 1-bit DACs, and the performance
improvements are most significant for the low-complexity quantized zero-forcing
(ZF) method.Comment: 5 pages, EUSIPCO 201
Distributed probabilistic-data-association-based soft reception employing base station cooperation in MIMO-aided multiuser multicell systems
Intercell cochannel interference (CCI) mitigation is investigated in the context of cellular systems relying on dense frequency reuse (FR). A distributed base-station (BS)-cooperation-aided soft reception scheme using the probabilistic data association (PDA) algorithm and soft combining (SC) is proposed for the uplink of multiuser multicell MIMO systems. The realistic 19-cell hexagonal cellular model relying on unity FR is considered, where both the BSs and the mobile stations (MSs) are equipped with multiple antennas. Local-cooperation-based message passing is used, instead of a global message passing chain for the sake of reducing the backhaul traffic. The PDA algorithm is employed as a low-complexity solution for producing soft information, which facilitates the employment of SC at the individual BSs to generate the final soft decision metric. Our simulations and analysis demonstrate that, despite its low additional complexity and backhaul traffic, the proposed distributed PDA-aided SC (DPDA-SC) reception scheme significantly outperforms the conventional noncooperative benchmarkers. Furthermore, since only the index of the possible discrete value of the quantized converged soft information has to be exchanged for SC in practice, the proposed DPDA-SC scheme is relatively robust to the quantization errors of the soft information exchanged. As a beneficial result, the backhaul traffic is dramatically reduced at negligible performance degradation
Fronthaul-Constrained Cloud Radio Access Networks: Insights and Challenges
As a promising paradigm for fifth generation (5G) wireless communication
systems, cloud radio access networks (C-RANs) have been shown to reduce both
capital and operating expenditures, as well as to provide high spectral
efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE). The fronthaul in such networks,
defined as the transmission link between a baseband unit (BBU) and a remote
radio head (RRH), requires high capacity, but is often constrained. This
article comprehensively surveys recent advances in fronthaul-constrained
C-RANs, including system architectures and key techniques. In particular, key
techniques for alleviating the impact of constrained fronthaul on SE/EE and
quality of service for users, including compression and quantization,
large-scale coordinated processing and clustering, and resource allocation
optimization, are discussed. Open issues in terms of software-defined
networking, network function virtualization, and partial centralization are
also identified.Comment: 5 Figures, accepted by IEEE Wireless Communications. arXiv admin

Feedback Allocation For OFDMA Systems With Slow Frequency-domain Scheduling
We study the problem of allocating limited feedback resources across multiple
users in an orthogonal-frequency-division-multiple-access downlink system with
slow frequency-domain scheduling. Many flavors of slow frequency-domain
scheduling (e.g., persistent scheduling, semi-persistent scheduling), that
adapt user-sub-band assignments on a slower time-scale, are being considered in
standards such as 3GPP Long-Term Evolution. In this paper, we develop a
feedback allocation algorithm that operates in conjunction with any arbitrary
slow frequency-domain scheduler with the goal of improving the throughput of
the system. Given a user-sub-band assignment chosen by the scheduler, the
feedback allocation algorithm involves solving a weighted sum-rate maximization
at each (slow) scheduling instant. We first develop an optimal
dynamic-programming-based algorithm to solve the feedback allocation problem
with pseudo-polynomial complexity in the number of users and in the total
feedback bit budget. We then propose two approximation algorithms with
complexity further reduced, for scenarios where the problem exhibits additional
structure.Comment: Accepted to IEEE Transactions on Signal Processin
Reduced-Complexity Maximum-Likelihood Detection in Multiple-Antenna-Aided Multicarrier Systems
In this contribution we explore a novel Optimized Hierarchy Reduced Search Algorithm (OHRSA)-aided space-time processing method, which may be regarded as an advanced extension of the Complex Sphere Decoder (CSD) method. The algorithm proposed extends the potential application range of the CSD method, as well as reduces the associated computational complexity
Hybrid Analog-Digital Precoding for Interference Exploitation
We study the multi-user massive multiple-input-single-output (MISO) and focus
on the downlink systems where the base station (BS) employs hybrid
analog-digital precoding with low-cost 1-bit digital-to-analog converters
(DACs). In this paper, we propose a hybrid downlink transmission scheme where
the analog precoder is formed based on the SVD decomposition. In the digital
domain, instead of designing a linear transmit precoding matrix, we directly
design the transmit signals by exploiting the concept of constructive
interference. The optimization problem is then formulated based on the geometry
of the modulation constellations and is shown to be non-convex. We relax the
above optimization and show that the relaxed optimization can be transformed
into a linear programming that can be efficiently solved. Numerical results
validate the superiority of the proposed scheme for the hybrid massive MIMO
downlink systems.Comment: 5 pages, EUSIPCO 201
