    Research in Business Process Management: A bibliometric analysis

    It contains several growing subtopics such as process mining, process flexibility and process compliance. BPM is also highly relevant for numerous related fields, such as Business Intelligence, ERP systems or Knowledge Management. The growing number of publications and the variety of topics in BPM make it useful to apply bibliometric methods on this scientific field. With bibliometric methods, topical clusters, essential authors and the relationships between them can be discovered. In this work, the BibTechMon software from the Austrian Institute of Technology is utilized to perform the bibliometric analyses. As a novelty for the work with BibTechMon, data from Google Scholar is used as the basis of the analyses. The nature of Google Scholar data differs significantly from the data of other scientific databases. These differences lead to changes on how the bibliometric analyses can be performed. After these changes have been assessed, several bibliometric analyses in the BPM field and related fields are performed. As a result of these analyses, diverse topical clusters in BPM and its related fields could be discovered. Additionally, important authors for each cluster and for the BPM field as a whole were determined. In order to evaluate the results of the bibliometric analyses, I conducted an interview on BPM with Professor Reichert, who is an active researcher in the field. Subsequently, his statements are compared with the results of the bibliometric analyses and the match between the bibliometric analyses and his statements is assessed

    Supporting effective unexpected exception handling in workflow management systems within organizaional contexts

Processes are modelled using high level languages specifying the sequence of tasks the organization has to perform. However, organizational processes do not have always a smooth flow conforming to any possible designed model and exceptions to the rule happen often. Organizations require flexibility to react to situations not predicted in the model. The required flexibility should be complemented with robustness to guarantee system reliability even in extreme situations. In our work, we have introduced the concept of WfMS resilience that comprises these two facets: robustness and flexibility. The main objective of our work is to increase resilience in WfMSs. From the events demanding for WfMS resilience, we focused on ad hoc effective unexpected exceptions as those for which no previous knowledge exist is the organization to derive the handling procedure and no plan can be a priori established. These exceptions usually require human intervention and problem solving activities, since the concrete situation may not be entirely understood before humans start reacting to the event. After discussing existing approaches to increase WfMS resilience, we have identified five levels of conformity. The fifth level, being the most demanding one, requires unrestricted humanistic interventions to workflow execution. In this thesis, we propose a system to support unrestricted users' interventions to the WfMS and we characterize the interventions as unstructured activities. The system has two modes of operation: it usually works under model control and changes to unstructured activities support when an exception is detected. The exception handling activities are carried out until the system is placed back into a coherent mode, where work may proceed undermodel execution control

    Schema Evolution in Process Management Systems

    Continuously arising new trends in information technology and developments at the (e-business) market let companies crave for automated business process support. Process management systems offer the promising possibility to (electronically) define, control, and monitor business processes. However, if this technology shall be applicable in practice it must be possible to change running business processes even at runtime. Basically, such process changes can take place at two levels - the process type level and the process instance level. If a process type is modified a new version of the respective process type schema is created. Then, at minimum, the process instances running according to the old process type schema version must be able to finish without being disturbed. However, this simple versioning approach is only sufficient for short-running business processes. For long-running ones like, for example, car leasing contracts or medical treatment processes which may last from 3 up to 5 years, it must be possible to apply the process type changes to the collection of running process instances as well, but without causing inconsistencies or errors in the sequel. Apart from process schema evolution and change propagation a flexible process management system must also enable instance-specific (ad-hoc) changes, for example, if exceptional situations occur. If then a process type change takes place the challenging question arises how to adequately deal with the interplay of process type and process instance changes
