    A logic for application level QoS

    Service Oriented Computing (SOC) has been proposed as a paradigm to describe computations of applications on wide area distributed systems. Awareness of Quality of Service (QoS) is emerging as a new exigency in both design and implementation of SOC applications. We do not refer to QoS aspects related to low-level performance and focus on those high-level non-functional features perceived by end-users as application dependent requirements, e.g., the price of a given service, or the payment mode, or else the availability of a resource (e.g., a file in a given format). In this paper we present a logic which includes mechanisms to consider the three main dimensions of systems, namely their structure, behaviour and QoS aspects. The evaluation of a formula is a value of a constraint-semiring and not just a boolean value expressing whether or not the formula holds. This permits to express not only topological and temporal properties but also QoS properties of systems. The logic is interpreted on SHReQ, a formal framework for specifying systems that handles abstract high-level QoS aspects combining Synchronised Hyperedge Replacement with constraint-semirings

    Evaluation of quality of service in fourth generation wireless and mobile networks

    Communication networks extend network capacity and coverage by leveraging network and resource architecture in a dynamic way. However, because of the different communication technologies and quality of service (QoS, managing and monitoring these networks are too difficult. All communication technology has its own characteristics while the applications you use have their own QoS requirements. The methods are based on the QoS analysis for each application or access network separately. However, these methods do not combine all performance and wireless access networks while reporting QoS quality to the group Arrangement. Therefore, it is difficult to obtain any aggregate performance results using these methods. In this project, a methodical method is applied for the QoS analysis of these types of networks. The method uses a fuzzy logic (FL), artificial neural network (ANN) and Adaptive Neuro-fuzzy Interference System (ANFIS) to evaluate and predict the performance QoS of networks. The proposed methods consider the significance of QoS-related parameters, the available network-based applications, and the available Radio Access Networks (RANs) to characterize the network performance with a set of three integrated QoS metrics. The first metric denotes the performance of each available application on the network, the second one represents the performance of each active RAN on the network, and the third one characterizes the QoS level of the entire network configuration. The obtained predicting output were compared to the actual data and to each other to test which system the best for this study. The results ANN model were the closed to the real data than outcome ANFIS model

    Context-aware adaptation in DySCAS

    DySCAS is a dynamically self-configuring middleware for automotive control systems. The addition of autonomic, context-aware dynamic configuration to automotive control systems brings a potential for a wide range of benefits in terms of robustness, flexibility, upgrading etc. However, the automotive systems represent a particularly challenging domain for the deployment of autonomics concepts, having a combination of real-time performance constraints, severe resource limitations, safety-critical aspects and cost pressures. For these reasons current systems are statically configured. This paper describes the dynamic run-time configuration aspects of DySCAS and focuses on the extent to which context-aware adaptation has been achieved in DySCAS, and the ways in which the various design and implementation challenges are met

    A survey of energy saving techniques for mobile computers

    Portable products such as pagers, cordless and digital cellular telephones, personal audio equipment, and laptop computers are increasingly being used. Because these applications are battery powered, reducing power consumption is vital. In this report we first give a survey of techniques for accomplishing energy reduction on the hardware level such as: low voltage components, use of sleep or idle modes, dynamic control of the processor clock frequency, clocking regions, and disabling unused peripherals. System- design techniques include minimizing external accesses, minimizing logic state transitions, and system partitioning using application-specific coprocessors. Then we review energy reduction techniques in the design of operating systems, including communication protocols, caching, scheduling and QoS management. Finally, we give an overview of policies to optimize the code of the application for energy consumption and make it aware of power management functions. Applications play a critical role in the user's experience of a power-managed system. Therefore, the application and the operating system must allow a user to control the power management. Remarkably, it appears that some energy preserving techniques not only lead to a reduced energy consumption, but also to more performance

    This chapter discusses the system architecture of a portable computer, called Mobile Digital Companion, which provides support for handling multimedia applications energy efficiently. Because battery life is limited and battery weight is an important factor for the size and the weight of the Mobile Digital Companion, energy management plays a crucial role in the architecture. As the Companion must remain usable in a variety of environments, it has to be flexible and adaptable to various operating conditions. The Mobile Digital Companion has an unconventional architecture that saves energy by using system decomposition at different levels of the architecture and exploits locality of reference with dedicated, optimised modules. The approach is based on dedicated functionality and the extensive use of energy reduction techniques at all levels of system design. The system has an architecture with a general-purpose processor accompanied by a set of heterogeneous autonomous programmable modules, each providing an energy efficient implementation of dedicated tasks. A reconfigurable internal communication network switch exploits locality of reference and eliminates wasteful data copies

    Platform-independent Dynamic Reconfiguration of Distributed Applications

    The aim of dynamic reconfiguration is to allow a system to evolve incrementally from one configuration to another at run-time, without restarting it or taking it offline. In recent years, support for transparent dynamic reconfiguration has been added to middleware platforms, shifting the complexity required to enable dynamic reconfiguration to the supporting infrastructure. These approaches to dynamic reconfiguration are mostly platform-specific and depend on particular implementation approaches suitable for particular platforms. In this paper, we propose an approach to dynamic reconfiguration of distributed applications that is suitable for application implemented on top of different platforms. This approach supports a platform-independent view of an application that profits from reconfiguration transparency. In this view, requirements on the ability to reconfigure components are expressed in an abstract manner. These requirements are then satisfied by platform-specific realizations
