Localization plays an important role in the field of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) and robotics. Currently, localization is a very vibrant scientific research field with many potential applications. Localization offers a variety of services for the customers, for example, in the field of WSN, its importance is unlimited, in the field of logistics, robotics, and IT services. Particularly localization is coupled with the case of human-machine interaction, autonomous systems, and the applications of augmented reality. Also, the collaboration of WSNs and distributed robotics has led to the creation of Mobile Sensor Networks (MSNs). Nowadays there has been an increasing interest in the creation of MSNs and they are the preferred aspect of WSNs in which mobility plays an important role while an application is going to execute. To overcome the issues regarding localization, the authors developed a framework of three algorithms named Extended Kalman Filter (EKF), Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) and Particle Filter (PF) Localization algorithms. In our previous study, the authors only focused on EKF-based localization. In this paper, the authors present a modified Kalman Filter (KF) for localization based on UKF and PF Localization. In the paper, all these algorithms are compared in very detail and evaluated based on their performance. The proposed localization algorithms can be applied to any type of localization approach, especially in the case of robot localization. Despite the harsh physical environment and several issues during localization, the result shows an outstanding localization performance within a limited time. The robustness of the proposed algorithms is verified through numerical simulations. The simulation results show that proposed localization algorithms can be used for various purposes such as target tracking, robot localization, and can improve the performance of localization

    Sigma Point Belief Propagation

The sigma point (SP) filter, also known as unscented Kalman filter, is an attractive alternative to the extended Kalman filter and the particle filter. Here, we extend the SP filter to nonsequential Bayesian inference corresponding to loopy factor graphs. We propose sigma point belief propagation (SPBP) as a low-complexity approximation of the belief propagation (BP) message passing scheme. SPBP achieves approximate marginalizations of posterior distributions corresponding to (generally) loopy factor graphs. It is well suited for decentralized inference because of its low communication requirements. For a decentralized, dynamic sensor localization problem, we demonstrate that SPBP can outperform nonparametric (particle-based) BP while requiring significantly less computations and communications.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figur

The Ensemble Kalman Filter: A Signal Processing Perspective

The ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) is a Monte Carlo based implementation of the Kalman filter (KF) for extremely high-dimensional, possibly nonlinear and non-Gaussian state estimation problems. Its ability to handle state dimensions in the order of millions has made the EnKF a popular algorithm in different geoscientific disciplines. Despite a similarly vital need for scalable algorithms in signal processing, e.g., to make sense of the ever increasing amount of sensor data, the EnKF is hardly discussed in our field. This self-contained review paper is aimed at signal processing researchers and provides all the knowledge to get started with the EnKF. The algorithm is derived in a KF framework, without the often encountered geoscientific terminology. Algorithmic challenges and required extensions of the EnKF are provided, as well as relations to sigma-point KF and particle filters. The relevant EnKF literature is summarized in an extensive survey and unique simulation examples, including popular benchmark problems, complement the theory with practical insights. The signal processing perspective highlights new directions of research and facilitates the exchange of potentially beneficial ideas, both for the EnKF and high-dimensional nonlinear and non-Gaussian filtering in general

A review of sensor technology and sensor fusion methods for map-based localization of service robot

Service robot is currently gaining traction, particularly in hospitality, geriatric care and healthcare industries. The navigation of service robots requires high adaptability, flexibility and reliability. Hence, map-based navigation is suitable for service robot because of the ease in updating changes in environment and the flexibility in determining a new optimal path. For map-based navigation to be robust, an accurate and precise localization method is necessary. Localization problem can be defined as recognizing the robot’s own position in a given environment and is a crucial step in any navigational process. Major difficulties of localization include dynamic changes of the real world, uncertainties and limited sensor information. This paper presents a comparative review of sensor technology and sensor fusion methods suitable for map-based localization, focusing on service robot applications

CES-515 Towards Localization and Mapping of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles: A Survey

Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) have been used for a huge number of tasks ranging from commercial, military and research areas etc, while the fundamental function of a successful AUV is its localization and mapping ability. This report aims to review the relevant elements of localization and mapping for AUVs. First, a brief introduction of the concept and the historical development of AUVs is given; then a relatively detailed description of the sensor system used for AUV navigation is provided. As the main part of the report, a comprehensive investigation of the simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) for AUVs are conducted, including its application examples. Finally a brief conclusion is summarized
