The Need for a Spiritual Reboot in the Youth of Great Commission Church

    Get PDF
The decline of the youth attendance is evident in many Protestant churches. This research paper examined forty-three young believers from three Haitian Baptist churches, respectively, located in Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. These data results help develop a suitable spiritual program that includes the six key influencing factors for spiritual growth: discipleship, mentoring, parental influence, church attendance, personal devotion, and ministerial involvement. This spiritual program was tested on a small group of young people from Great Commission Church in Queens. This research uses a mixed-method methodology, which is a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods to analyze the data. The results show that parental influence can help Haitian youth attend church, but it does not encourage discipleship, mentorship, and ministerial involvement in the church. Further studies should aim at understanding the extent of parental involvement needed to encourage Haitian youth to be involved in the church\u27s ministries

Succession Planning in the Federal Government

Succession planning is a term that refers to the systematic and methodological efforts an organization uses to plan for organizational stability and proficiency. Organizations must provide employees the training, experiences, and knowledge required to assume positions of increased responsibility when those jobs are vacated. Agencies should strive to create a diversified pool of qualified candidates to avoid a talent gap, workforce shortages, or a loss of agency knowledge. Over the past fifteen years, the Federal Government has continued to highlight the need to take a proactive approach to succession planning by first identifying the skill sets needed for critical positions and then developing their future leaders. With a limited number of new employees entering civil service and projected retirements over the next several years, it is essential that agencies quickly prioritize succession planning strategies to train and prepare employees to assume critical acquisition positions, such as the Contracting Officer (CO) role. COs are the only individuals with authority to procure goods and services on the Government’s behalf and therefore occupy positions classified as inherently governmental functions. This research study explored the lack of succession planning at DoN agencies in Southern MD and the impact of the failure to create a multi-generational pipeline of qualified candidates who can compete for CO positions as they are vacated

Personalized Recommendations of Upcoming Sport Events

Recommender systems have emerged as essential tools for enhancing user engagement and content discovery in various domains, including the sports industry. In the context of sports viewing, personalized recommendations have become increasingly significant, enabling users to easily connect with their favorite sports teams, explore new content, and broaden their viewing preferences. Collaborative filtering (CF) stands out as a popular recommendation algorithm that analyzes the similarities and patterns in user-item interactions. By examining the behavior and preferences of a group of users, CF identifies similar users and recommends items that have been positively received by those with similar tastes. Applying CF to sports recommendations presents an opportunity to introduce users to new sports events enjoyed by their peers. However, recommending upcoming live sports events introduces unique challenges, such as limited availability and the need to strike a balance between catering to users' favorite sports and introducing them to new content. This master thesis aims to address these challenges through the development of a personalized recommendation system for upcoming sports events using CF. The system will analyze user viewing history to provide tailored recommendations that facilitate content discovery and enable users to easily locate their preferred sports events. The research objectives include identifying the most suitable collaborative filtering model for sports content recommendation, investigating the factors that influence sports fans' preferences for specific types of live sports events, and evaluating the effectiveness of personalized recommendations compared to non-personalized approaches. The proposed system is implemented and A/B tested on TV 2 Play, one of Norway's largest digital streaming platforms, with the ultimate goal of enhancing user experience and engagement by delivering personalized and relevant recommendations for sports content. This research contributes to the field by proposing a novel collaborative filtering recommender for sports based on user viewing sessions, exploring effective strategies for recommending upcoming live sports events, and assessing the system's performance in terms of accuracy and user satisfaction.Masteroppgave i informasjonsvitenskapINFO390MASV-INF

Creative Strategies; Maintaining Loyalty in Corporate Downsizing

    Get PDF
To remain competitive, organization leaders look for methods of reducing organizational costs. Downsizing is one method leaders have implemented to lower costs; however, downsizing may affect employee loyalty and trust within the organization. The purpose of this study was to highlight managers’ experiences affecting practices and strategies, influencing loyalty and trust in corporate downsizing through the qualitative hermeneutic phenomenology approach. The conceptual framework provided structuralism revealing low morale and decreased loyalty and trust. The research question focused on lived experiences of managers and employees during downsizing, maintaining loyalty and trust by invoking creative strategies to retain jobs. Eight participants shared their unique life experiences. The 14 open-ended interview questions focused on demographics, loyalty, trust, and creative ways to preserve jobs. Following a phenomenological data analysis model, the interview data were coded, categorized and themes were created. The results of the study indicated that from the themes, emotions are central to how employees handle positive and negative workplace situations; loyalty and trust contributing to a healthy work environment; and downsizing can cause an unstable work environment. The social change implications are that the organizational leaders may create a more stable work environment implementing creative strategies that save the organization capital and increase employees\u27 trust and loyalty

TOWARDS AN UNDERSTANDING OF EFFORTFUL FUNDRAISING EXPERIENCES: USING INTERPRETATIVE PHENOMENOLOGICAL ANALYSIS IN FUNDRAISING RESEARCH

    Get PDF
Physical-activity oriented community fundraising has experienced an exponential growth in popularity over the past 15 years. The aim of this study was to explore the value of effortful fundraising experiences, from the point of view of participants, and explore the impact that these experiences have on people’s lives. This study used an IPA approach to interview 23 individuals, recognising the role of participants as proxy (nonprofessional) fundraisers for charitable organisations, and the unique organisation donor dynamic that this creates. It also bought together relevant psychological theory related to physical activity fundraising experiences (through a narrative literature review) and used primary interview data to substantiate these. Effortful fundraising experiences are examined in detail to understand their significance to participants, and how such experiences influence their connection with a charity or cause. This was done with an idiographic focus at first, before examining convergences and divergences across the sample. This study found that effortful fundraising experiences can have a profound positive impact upon community fundraisers in both the short and the long term. Additionally, it found that these experiences can be opportunities for charitable organisations to create lasting meaningful relationships with participants, and foster mutually beneficial lifetime relationships with them. Further research is needed to test specific psychological theory in this context, including self-esteem theory, self determination theory, and the martyrdom effect (among others)

Understanding business model innovation in start-ups – a dynamic managerial capabilities perspective

    Get PDF
Although start-ups and incumbent firms both engage in business model innovation, the research literature on business model innovation has largely focused on incumbent firms. Start-ups play an important role in the growth of an economy, and with their failure rate being high, the need for an adequate business model and continuously innovating it, is crucial for financial performance and competitive advantage. Underpinning this study is the understanding that a business model represents how a firm creates, delivers, and captures value. Moreover, business model innovation involves reconfiguring components or the architecture of a business model for the benefit of the firm, which requires capabilities. The importance of the dynamic capabilities of a firm, and the need to quickly identify and respond to opportunities, and consequently innovate business models has previously been noted. However, gaps still exist in how business model innovation is understood with respect to dynamic managerial capabilities in start-ups. This study contributes to the body of knowledge by exploring the influence of capabilities on business model innovation in start-ups. Based on the theory of dynamic managerial capabilities, the following research question was examined: What capabilities allow managers (e.g. founders, decision makers) in start-ups to innovate their business models? This study was situated within the critical realism paradigm and used multiple explorative cross-sectional case studies on start-ups. The primary source of data was the subjective experience of managers, who were recruited through purposive sampling. Semi-structured interviews were used to elicit the data, which was recorded and transcribed verbatim. The transcripts were analysed using thematic analysis, and documentary evidence was used for triangulation. The findings highlight two main dimensions of capabilities that enable start-up managers to innovate their business models. These are collaboration capabilities (comprising of networking, commitment, and internal cooperation) and capitalization capabilities (comprising of experience, searching, and maximizing resources). This study draws attention to the need for managers to foster these capabilities, and the implications for professional managerial practises and the research literature are delineated
