    Microcomputer based controller for the Langley 0.3-meter Transonic Cryogenic Tunnel

    Flow control of the Langley 0.3-meter Transonic Cryogenic Tunnel (TCT) is a multivariable nonlinear control problem. Globally stable control laws were generated to hold tunnel conditions in the presence of geometrical disturbances in the test section and precisely control the tunnel states for small and large set point changes. The control laws are mechanized as four inner control loops for tunnel pressure, temperature, fan speed, and liquid nitrogen supply pressure, and two outer loops for Mach number and Reynolds number. These integrated control laws have been mechanized on a 16-bit microcomputer working on DOS. This document details the model of the 0.3-m TCT, control laws, microcomputer realization, and its performance. The tunnel closed loop responses to small and large set point changes were presented. The controller incorporates safe thermal management of the tunnel cooldown based on thermal restrictions. The controller was shown to provide control of temperature to + or - 0.2K, pressure to + or - 0.07 psia, and Mach number to + or - 0.002 of a given set point during aerodynamic data acquisition in the presence of intrusive geometrical changes like flexwall movement, angle-of-attack changes, and drag rake traverse. The controller also provides a new feature of Reynolds number control. The controller provides a safe, reliable, and economical control of the 0.3-m TCT

    With the advance of technology and rapid growth of digital systems, low power high speed analog-to-digital converters with great accuracy are in demand. To achieve high effective number of bits Analog-to-Digital Converter(ADC) calibration as a time consuming process is a potential bottleneck for designs. This dissertation presentsa fully digital background calibration algorithm for a 7-bit redundant flash ADC using split structure and look-up table based correction. Redundant comparators are used in the flash ADC design of this work in order to tolerate large offset voltages while minimizing signal input capacitance. The split ADC structure helps by eliminating the unknown input signal from the calibration path. The flash ADC has been designed in 180nm IBM CMOS technology and fabricated through MOSIS. This work was supported by Analog Devices, Wilmington,MA. While much research on ADC design has concentrated on increasing resolution and sample rate, there are many applications (e.g. biomedical devices and sensor networks) that do not require high performance but do require low power energy efficient ADCs. This dissertation also explores on design of a low quiescent current 100kSps Successive Approximation (SAR) ADC that has been used as an error detection ADC for an automotive application in 350nm CD (CMOS-DMOS) technology. Furthermore, it explains the analysis and synthesis techniques of Disturbance Observer-based robust control for linear and nonlinear systems by using a unified framework.     All Digital, Background Calibration for Time-Interleaved and Successive Approximation Register Analog-to-Digital Converters

    The growth of digital systems underscores the need to convert analog information to the digital domain at high speeds and with great accuracy. Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) calibration is often a limiting factor, requiring longer calibration times to achieve higher accuracy. The goal of this dissertation is to perform a fully digital background calibration using an arbitrary input signal for A/D converters. The work presented here adapts the cyclic Split-ADC calibration method to the time interleaved (TI) and successive approximation register (SAR) architectures. The TI architecture has three types of linear mismatch errors: offset, gain and aperture time delay. By correcting all three mismatch errors in the digital domain, each converter is capable of operating at the fastest speed allowed by the process technology. The total number of correction parameters required for calibration is dependent on the interleaving ratio, M. To adapt the Split-ADC method to a TI system, 2M+1 half-sized converters are required to estimate 3(2M+1) correction parameters. This thesis presents a 4:1 Split-TI converter that achieves full convergence in less than 400,000 samples. The SAR architecture employs a binary weight capacitor array to convert analog inputs into digital output codes. Mismatch in the capacitor weights results in non-linear distortion error. By adding redundant bits and dividing the array into individual unit capacitors, the Split-SAR method can estimate the mismatch and correct the digital output code. The results from this work show a reduction in the non-linear distortion with the ability to converge in less than 750,000 samples

    Development of real-time cellular impedance analysis system

    The cell impedance analysis technique is a label-free, non-invasive method, which simplifies sample preparation and allows applications requiring unmodified cell retrieval. However, traditional impedance measurement methods suffer from various problems (speed, bandwidth, accuracy) for extracting the cellular impedance information. This thesis proposes an improved system for extracting precise cellular impedance in real-time, with a wide bandwidth and satisfactory accuracy. The system hardware consists of five main parts: a microelectrode array (MEA), a stimulation circuit, a sensing circuit, a multi-function card and a computer. The development of system hardware is explored. Accordingly, a novel bioimpedance measurement method coined digital auto balancing bridge method, which is improved from the traditional analogue auto balancing bridge circuitry, is realized for real-time cellular impedance measurement. Two different digital bridge balancing algorithms are proposed and realized, which are based on least mean squares (LMS) algorithm and fast block LMS (FBLMS) algorithm for single- and multi-frequency measurements respectively. Details on their implementation in FPGA are discussed. The test results prove that the LMS-based algorithm is suitable for accelerating the measurement speed in single-frequency situation, whilst the FBLMS-based algorithm has advantages in stable convergence in multi-frequency applications. A novel algorithm, called the All Phase Fast Fourier Transform (APFFT), is applied for post-processing of bioimpedance measurement results. Compared with the classical FFT algorithm, the APFFT significantly reduces spectral leakage caused by truncation error. Compared to the traditional FFT and Digital Quadrature Demodulation (DQD) methods, the APFFT shows excellent performance for extracting accurate phase and amplitude in the frequency spectrum. Additionally, testing and evaluation of the realized system has been performed. The results show that our system achieved a satisfactory accuracy within a wide bandwidth, a fast measurement speed and a good repeatability. Furthermore, our system is compared with a commercial impedance analyzer (Agilent 4294A) in biological experiments. The results reveal that our system achieved a comparable accuracy to the commercial instrument in the biological experiments. Finally, conclusions are given and the future work is proposed

    A Self-calibration Algorithm Based on a Unified Framework for Constraints on Multiple Views

    In this paper, we propose a new self-calibration algorithm for upgrading projective space to Euclidean space. The proposed method aims to combine the most commonly used metric constraints, including zero skew and unit aspect-ratio by formulating each constraint as a cost function within a unified framework. Additional constraints, e.g., constant principal points, can also be formulated in the same framework. The cost function is very flexible and can be composed of different constraints on different views. The upgrade process is then stated as a minimization problem which may be solved by minimizing an upper bound of the cost function. This proposed method is non-iterative.     Identification of a one-bit lowpass sigma-delta modulator using BIMBO

    International audienceWe show how the BIMBO identification method can be used for the online identification of the digital filter in a sigma-delta modulator's loop. This parameter estimation method only requires the knowledge of the bit stream at the modulator output. This approach does not rely on an approximation of the comparator (such as additive white noise or describing function approximation). Moreover, it requires no amplitude measurement, as opposed to most other methods, and, thus, it involves no additional electronics and it is therefore very economical to implement it practically. The method is described from a theoretical point of view and an experimental validation is given

    Hierarchical structure-and-motion recovery from uncalibrated images

    This paper addresses the structure-and-motion problem, that requires to find camera motion and 3D struc- ture from point matches. A new pipeline, dubbed Samantha, is presented, that departs from the prevailing sequential paradigm and embraces instead a hierarchical approach. This method has several advantages, like a provably lower computational complexity, which is necessary to achieve true scalability, and better error containment, leading to more stability and less drift. Moreover, a practical autocalibration procedure allows to process images without ancillary information. Experiments with real data assess the accuracy and the computational efficiency of the method.Comment: Accepted for publication in CVI
