    Anti-unification and Generalization: A Survey

    Anti-unification (AU), also known as generalization, is a fundamental operation used for inductive inference and is the dual operation to unification, an operation at the foundation of theorem proving. Interest in AU from the AI and related communities is growing, but without a systematic study of the concept, nor surveys of existing work, investigations7 often resort to developing application-specific methods that may be covered by existing approaches.     Expression of Interest: The Atmospheric Neutrino Neutron Interaction Experiment (ANNIE)

    Neutron tagging in Gadolinium-doped water may play a significant role in reducing backgrounds from atmospheric neutrinos in next generation proton-decay searches using megaton-scale Water Cherenkov detectors. Similar techniques might also be useful in the detection of supernova neutrinos. Accurate determination of neutron tagging efficiencies will require a detailed understanding of the number of neutrons produced by neutrino interactions in water as a function of momentum transferred. We propose the Atmospheric Neutrino Neutron Interaction Experiment (ANNIE), designed to measure the neutron yield of atmospheric neutrino interactions in gadolinium-doped water. An innovative aspect of the ANNIE design is the use of precision timing to localize interaction vertices in the small fiducial volume of the detector. We propose to achieve this by using early production of LAPPDs (Large Area Picosecond Photodetectors).     The character of jets is dominated by the influence of intrinsically nonabelian gauge dynamics. These proven insights into fundamental physics ramify in many directions, and are far from being exhausted. I will discuss three rewarding explorations from my own experience, whose point of departure is the hard Yang-Mills interaction, and whose end is not yet in sight.     A Theory About First-Order Terms in ACL2

    We describe the development in ACL2 of a library of results about first-order terms. In particular, we present the formalization of some of the main properties of the complete lattice of first-order terms with respect to the subsumption relation. As a byproduct, verified executable implementations are obtained for some basic operations on firstorder terms, including matching, renaming, unification and anti-unification.     Higher-Order Pattern Anti-Unification in Linear Time

    We present a rule-based Huet’s style anti-unification algorithm for simply typed lambda-terms, which computes a least general higher-order pattern generalization. For a pair of arbitrary terms of the same type, such a generalization always exists and is unique modulo α-equivalence and variable renaming. With a minor modification, the algorithm works for untyped lambda-terms as well.
