Propagators and Solvers for the Algebra of Modular Systems

Solving complex problems can involve non-trivial combinations of distinct
knowledge bases and problem solvers. The Algebra of Modular Systems is a
knowledge representation framework that provides a method for formally
specifying such systems in purely semantic terms. Formally, an expression of
the algebra defines a class of structures. Many expressive formalism used in
practice solve the model expansion task, where a structure is given on the
input and an expansion of this structure in the defined class of structures is
searched (this practice overcomes the common undecidability problem for
expressive logics). In this paper, we construct a solver for the model
expansion task for a complex modular systems from an expression in the algebra
and black-box propagators or solvers for the primitive modules. To this end, we
define a general notion of propagators equipped with an explanation mechanism,
an extension of the alge- bra to propagators, and a lazy conflict-driven
learning algorithm. The result is a framework for seamlessly combining solving
technology from different domains to produce a solver for a combined system.Comment: To appear in the proceedings of LPAR 2

A comparative survey of integrated learning systems
This paper presents the duction framework for unifying the three basic forms of inference - deduction, abduction, and induction - by specifying the possible relationships and influences among them in the context of integrated learning. Special assumptive forms of inference are defined that extend the use of these inference methods, and the properties of these forms are explored. A comparison to a related inference-based learning frame work is made. Finally several existing integrated learning programs are examined in the perspective of the duction framework
Reusable Knowledge-based Components for Building Software Applications: A Knowledge Modelling Approach
In computer science, different types of reusable components for building software applications were proposed as a direct consequence of the emergence of new software programming paradigms. The success of these components for building applications depends on factors such as the flexibility in their combination or the facility for their selection in centralised or distributed environments such as internet. In this article, we propose a general type of reusable component, called primitive of representation, inspired by a knowledge-based approach that can promote reusability. The proposal can be understood as a generalisation of existing partial solutions that is applicable to both software and knowledge engineering for the development of hybrid applications that integrate conventional and knowledge based techniques. The article presents the structure and use of the component and describes our recent experience in the development of real-world applications based on this approach
What Can Be Learned from Computer Modeling? Comparing Expository and Modeling Approaches to Teaching Dynamic Systems Behavior
Computer modeling has been widely promoted as a means to attain higher order learning outcomes. Substantiating these benefits, however, has been problematic due to a lack of proper assessment tools. In this study, we compared computer modeling with expository instruction, using a tailored assessment designed to reveal the benefits of either mode of instruction. The assessment addresses proficiency in declarative knowledge, application, construction, and evaluation. The subscales differentiate between simple and complex structure. The learning task concerns the dynamics of global warming. We found that, for complex tasks, the modeling group outperformed the expository group on declarative knowledge and on evaluating complex models and data. No differences were found with regard to the application of knowledge or the creation of models. These results confirmed that modeling and direct instruction lead to qualitatively different learning outcomes, and that these two modes of instruction cannot be compared on a single “effectiveness measure”
