Search and Delivery of Standardized Learning Resources Based on SOAP Messaging and Native XML Databases

With the progress of Web-based learning technologies, standardized digital repositories and learning management systems are becoming prevalent over time. The heterogeneity in underlying databases and access methods, however, makes it difficult to share and exchange the learning resources between them. In this paper, we propose an architecture for the search and delivery of learning resources. Based on the SOAP transmission protocol, the architecture seeks to improve interoperability between heterogeneous E-Learning implementations. We also present a general-purpose query language as a building block of the architecture. The language provides a unified query interface for resource repositories, thereby shielding the users from the differences in underlying databases and metadata schemas. To highlight our design, an implementation using LOM, native XML database and XPath is presented. The last part of this paper discusses technical and pedagogical issues of concern regarding the launching of contents from within standardized LMSs

A novel planning approach for the water, sanitation and hygiene (WaSH) sector: the use of object-oriented bayesian networks

Conventional approaches to design and plan water, sanitation, and hygiene (WaSH) interventions are not suitable for capturing the increasing complexity of the context in which these services are delivered. Multidimensional tools are needed to unravel the links between access to basic services and the socio-economic drivers of poverty. This paper applies an object-oriented Bayesian network to reflect the main issues that determine access to WaSH services. A national Program in Kenya has been analyzed as initial case study. The main findings suggest that the proposed approach is able to accommodate local conditions and to represent an accurate reflection of the complexities of WaSH issues, incorporating the uncertainty intrinsic to service delivery processes. Results indicate those areas in which policy makers should prioritize efforts and resources. Similarly, the study shows the effects of sector interventions, as well as the foreseen impact of various scenarios related to the national Program.Preprin

Control Synchronous Web-Based Training Using Web Services

With the rapidly advancing technologies, training has been vital to keep companies competitive. Web-based training grows rapidly and attracts more attention for its most flexible manner. Virtual classroom is a form of synchronous web-based training. It provides real-time interactivity in learning process. I have developed a virtual classroom that uses Web services to control the audio/video transmission, chat box, whiteboard, and synchronous HTML presentation. Compared to an early implementation of the virtual classroom based on the Jini network, my Web-service based implementation has a significantly different control structure. My implementation has better interoperability

    Facilitating Wiki/Repository Communication with Metadata

4th International Conference on Open RepositoriesThis presentation was part of the session : Fedora User Group PresentationsDate: 2009-05-20 01:30 PM – 03:00 PMThe National Science Digital Library (NSDL) Materials Digital Library Pathway (MatDL) has implemented an information infrastructure to disseminate government funded research results and to provide content as well as services to support the integration of research and education in materials. This paper describes how we are enabling two-way communication between a digital repository and open-source collaborative tools, such as wikis, to support users in materials research and education in the creation and re-use of compelling learning resources. A search results plug-in for MediaWiki has been developed to display relevant search results from the Fedora-based MatDL repository in the Soft Matter Wiki established and developed by MatDL and its partners. Wiki-to-repository information transfer has also been facilitated by mapping the metadata associated with resources originating in the wiki onto Dublin Core (DC) metadata elements and making the metadata and resources available in the repository. The Materials Digital Library Pathway (DUE-0532831) is supported by the National Science Foundation
