There are enormous advantages of a review article in the field of emerging technology like radar remote sensing applications in agriculture. This paper aims to report select recent advancements in the field of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) remote sensing of crops. In order to make the paper comprehensive and more meaningful for the readers, an attempt has also been made to include discussion on various technologies of SAR sensors used for remote sensing of agricultural crops viz. basic SAR sensor, SAR interferometry (InSAR), SAR polarimetry (PolSAR) and polarimetric interferometry SAR (PolInSAR). The paper covers all the methodologies used for various agricultural applications like empirically based models, machine learning based models and radiative transfer theorem based models. A thorough literature review of more than 100 research papers indicates that SAR polarimetry can be used effectively for crop inventory and biophysical parameters estimation such are leaf area index, plant water content, and biomass but shown less sensitivity towards plant height as compared to SAR interferometry. Polarimetric SAR Interferometry is preferable for taking advantage of both SAR polarimetry and SAR interferometry. Numerous studies based upon multi-parametric SAR indicate that optimum selection of SAR sensor parameters enhances SAR sensitivity as a whole for various agricultural applications. It has been observed that researchers are widely using three models such are empirical, machine learning and radiative transfer theorem based models. Machine learning based models are identified as a better approach for crop monitoring using radar remote sensing data. It is expected that the review article will not only generate interest amongst the readers to explore and exploit radar remote sensing for various agricultural applications but also provide a ready reference to the researchers working in this field

Permafrost occupies approximately 24% of the exposed land area in the Northern Hemisphere. It is an important element of the cryosphere and has strong impacts on hydrology, biological processes, land surface energy budget, and infrastructure. For several decades, surface air temperatures in the high northern latitudes have warmed at approximately twice the global rate. Permafrost temperatures have increased in most regions since the early 1980s, the averaged warming north of 60°N has been 1-2°C. In-situ measurements are essential to understanding physical processes in permafrost terrain, but they have several limitations, ranging from difficulties in drilling to the representativeness of limited single point measurements. Remote sensing is urgently needed to supplement ground-based measurements and extend the point observations to a broader spatial domain. This thesis concentrates on the sub-arctic permafrost environment monitoring with SAR datasets. The study site is selected in a typical discontinuous permafrost region in the eastern Canadian sub-Arctic. Inuit communities in Nunavik and Nunatsiavut in the Canadian eastern sub-arctic are amongst the groups most affected by the impacts of climate change and permafrost degradation. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) datasets have advantages for permafrost monitoring in the Arctic and sub-arctic regions because of its high resolution and independence of cloud cover and solar illumination. To date, permafrost environment monitoring methods and strategies with SAR datasets are still under development. The variability of active layer thickness is a direct indication of permafrost thermal state changes. The Differential SAR Interferometry (D-InSAR) technique is applied in the study site to derive ground deformation, which is introduced by the thawing/freezing depth of active layer and underlying permafrost. The D-InSAR technique has been used for the mapping of ground surface deformation over large areas by interpreting the phase difference between two signals acquired at different times as ground motion information. It shows the ability to detect freeze/thaw-related ground motion over permafrost regions. However, to date, accuracy and value assessments of D-InSAR applications have focused mostly on the continuous permafrost region where the vegetation is less developed and causes fewer complicating factors for the D-InSAR application, less attention is laid on the discontinuous permafrost terrain. In this thesis, the influencing factors and application conditions for D-InSAR in the discontinuous permafrost environment are evaluated by using X- band and L-band data. Then, benefit from by the high-temporal resolution of C-band Sentinel-1 time series, the seasonal displacement is derived from small baseline subsets (SBAS)-InSAR. Landforms are indicative of permafrost presence, with their changes inferring modifications to permafrost conditions. A permafrost landscape mapping method was developed which uses multi-temporal TerraSAR-X backscatter intensity and interferometric coherence information. The land cover map is generated through the combined use of object-based image analysis (OBIA) and classification and regression tree analysis (CART). An overall accuracy of 98% is achieved when classifying rock and water bodies, and an accuracy of 79% is achieved when discriminating between different vegetation types with one year of single-polarized acquisitions. This classification strategy can be transferred to other time-series SAR datasets, e.g., Sentinel-1, and other heterogeneous environments. One predominant change in the landscape tied to the thaw of permafrost is the dynamics of thermokarst lakes. Dynamics of thermokarst lakes are developed through their lateral extent and vertical depth changes. Due to different water depth, ice cover over shallow thermokarst ponds/lakes can freeze completely to the lake bed in winter, resulting in grounded ice; while ice cover over deep thermokarst ponds/lakes cannot, which have liquid water persisting under the ice cover all winter, resulting in floating ice. Winter ice cover regimes are related to water depths and ice thickness. In the lakes having floating ice, the liquid water induces additional heat in the remaining permafrost underneath and surroundings, which contributes to further intensified permafrost thawing. SAR datasets are utilized to detect winter ice cover regimes based on the character that liquid water has a remarkably high dielectric constant, whereas pure ice has a low value. Patterns in the spatial distribution of ice-cover regimes of thermokarst ponds in a typical discontinuous permafrost region are first revealed. Then, the correlations of these ice-cover regimes with the permafrost degradation states and thermokarst pond development in two historical phases (Sheldrake catchment in the year 1957 and 2009, Tasiapik Valley 1994 and 2010) were explored. The results indicate that the ice-cover regimes of thermokarst ponds are affected by soil texture, permafrost degradation stage and permafrost depth. Permafrost degradation is difficult to directly assess from the coverage area of floating-ice ponds and the percentage of all thermokarst ponds consisting of such floating-ice ponds in a single year. Continuous monitoring of ice-cover regimes and surface areas is recommended to elucidate the hydrological trajectory of the thermokarst process. Several operational monitoring methods have been developed in this thesis work. In the meanwhile, the spatial distribution of seasonal ground thaw subsidence, permafrost landscape, thermokarst ponds and their winter ice cover regimes are first revealed in the study area. The outcomes help understand the state and dynamics of permafrost environment.

First assessment of the interferometric capabilities of SAOCOM-1A: New results over the Domuyo Volcano, Neuquén Argentina

Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR) has been used for measuring ground deformations with high both spatial and temporal resolutions. The effectiveness of this technique has been extensively proved using mainly C and X band because of the availability of SAR platforms operating in these frequencies. In vegetated areas, L-band SAR is more adequate because of their less sensitivity to temporal decorrelation. This work presents a review of the characteristics of the L-band Argentinian satellite SAOCOM-1A and its potential in deformation monitoring. In order to show it, we processed a dataset acquired over the Domuyo Volcano (Neuquén, Argentina). Time series and mean deformation maps are validated against those computed using a Sentinel-1 dataset spanning the same time period. Results show an inflation pattern of 6 cm between August 2019 and May 2020. As expected and despising the scarce availability of SAOCOM scenes, its mean velocity map is admittedly more coherent in comparison with the Sentinel-1. Thus, we demonstrate, for the first time, the computation of deformation time series using SAOCOM data.Fil: Roa, Yenni Lorena Belén. Universidad Nacional de Cuyo; Argentina. A large number of successfully launched and operated Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellites has regularly provided multitemporal SAR and polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) images with high and very high spatial resolution over immense areas of the Earth surface. SAR system is appropriate for monitoring tasks thanks to the advantage of operating in all-time and all-weather conditions. With multitemporal data, both spatial and temporal information can simultaneously be exploited to improve the results of researche works. Change detection of specific features within a certain time interval has to deal with a complex processing of SAR data and the so-called speckle which affects the backscattered signal as multiplicative noise. The aim of this thesis is to provide a methodology for simplifying the analysis of multitemporal SAR data. Such methodology can benefit from the advantages of repetitive SAR acquisitions and be able to process different kinds of SAR data (i.e. single, multipolarization SAR, etc.) for various applications. In this thesis, we first propose a general framework based on a spatio-temporal information matrix called emph{Change Detection Matrix} (CDM). This matrix contains temporal neighborhoods which are adaptive to changed and unchanged areas thanks to similarity cross tests. Then, the proposed method is used to perform three different tasks:1) multitemporal change detection with different kinds of changes, which allows the combination of multitemporal pair-wise change maps to improve the performance of change detection result;2) analysis of change dynamics in the observed area, which allows the investigation of temporal evolution of objects of interest;3) nonlocal temporal mean filtering of SAR/PolSAR image time series, which allows us to avoid smoothing change information in the time series during the filtering process. In order to illustrate the relevancy of the proposed method, the experimental works of the thesis is performed on four datasets over two test-sites: Chamonix Mont-Blanc, France and Merapi volcano, Indonesia, with different types of changes (i.e., seasonal evolution, glaciers, volcanic eruption, etc.). Observations of these test-sites are performed on four SAR images time series from single polarization to full polarization, from medium to high, very high spatial resolution: Sentinel-1, ALOS-PALSAR, RADARSAT-2 and TerraSAR-X time series.

Design Options For Low Cost, Low Power Microsatellite Based SAR.

This research aims at providing a system design that reduces the mass and cost of spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) missions by a factor of two compared to current (TecSAR - 300 kg, ~ £ 127 M) or planned (NovaSAR-S — 400 kg, ~ £ 50 M) mission. This would enable the cost of a SAR constellation to approach that of the current optical constellation such as Disaster Monitoring Constellation (DMC). This research has identified that the mission cost can be reduced significantly by: focusing on a narrow range of applications (forestry and disasters monitoring); ensuring the final design has a compact stowage volume, which facilitates a shared launch; and building the payload around available platforms, rather than the platform around the payload. The central idea of the research has been to operate the SAR at a low instantaneous power level—a practical proposition for a micro-satellite based SAR. The use of a simple parabolic reflector with a single horn at L-band means that a single, reliable and efficient Solid State Power Amplifier (SSPA) can be used to lower the overall system cost, and to minimise the impact on the spacecraft power system. A detailed analysis of basic pulsed (~ 5 - 10 % duty cycle) and Continuous Wave (CW) SAR (100 % duty cycle) payloads has shown their inability to fit directly into existing microsatellite buses without involving major changes, or employing more than one platform. To circumvent the problems of pulsed and CW techniques, two approaches have been formulated. The first shows that a CW SAR can be implemented in a mono-static way with a single antenna on a single platform. In this technique, the SAR works in an Interrupted CW (ICW) mode, but these interruptions introduce periodic gaps in the raw data. On processing, these gapped data result in artefacts in the reconstructed images. By applying data based statistical estimation techniques to “fill in the gaps” in the simulated raw SAR data, this research has shown the possibility of minimising the effects of these artefacts. However, once the same techniques are applied to the real SAR data (in this case derived from RADARSAT-1), the artefacts are shown to be problematic. Because of this the ICW SAR design technique it is—set aside. The second shows that an extended chirp mode pulsed (ECMP) SAR (~ 20 - 54 % duty cycle) can be designed with a lowered peak power level which enables a single SSPA to feed a parabolic Cassegrain antenna. The detailed analysis shows the feasibility of developing a microsatellite based SAR design at a comparable price to those of optical missions

Study of the speckle noise effects over the eigen decomposition of polarimetric SAR data: a review

    No full text
This paper is focused on considering the effects of speckle noise on the eigen decomposition of the co- herency matrix. Based on a perturbation analysis of the matrix, it is possible to obtain an analytical expression for the mean value of the eigenvalues and the eigenvectors, as well as for the Entropy, the Anisotroopy and the dif- ferent a angles. The analytical expressions are compared against simulated polarimetric SAR data, demonstrating the correctness of the different expressions.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

In this doctoral thesis, the InSAR techniques are applied to detect the ground movement phenomenon and to assess the InSAR result geometrically in the Ciloto area, Indonesia. Mainly, one of those techniques, the SB-SDFP algorithm, overcomes the limitations of conventional InSAR in monitoring rural and agricultural areas and can observe extremely slow landslides. The InSAR strategy is positively known as a promising option to detect and quantify the kinematics of active landslides on a large areal scale. To minimize the bias of the InSAR displacement result, the correction of the tropospheric phase delay was carried out in a first step. This procedure is demonstrated in experiments both in the small study area in Ciloto and in a larger area. The latter is an area located in Northern Baja California, Mexico and is dominated by tectonic activity as well as groundwater-induced subsidence. A detailed investigation of the slope movement's behavior in the Ciloto district was conducted utilizing multi-temporal and multi-band SAR data from ERS1/2 (1996-1999), ALOS PALSAR (2007-2009) and Sentinel-1 (2014-2018) satellites. The region was successfully identified as a permanent active landslide prone area, especially in the vicinity of the Puncak Pass and Puncak Highway. The full 3D velocity field and the displacement time series were estimated using the inversion model. The velocity rate was classified from extremely slow to slow movement. To comprehend the landslide's behavior, a further examination of the relationship between InSAR results and physical characteristics of the area was carried out. For the long period of a slow-moving landslide, the relationship between precipitation and displacement trend shows a weak correlation. It is concluded that the extremely slow to slow deformation is not directly influenced by the rainfall intensity, yet it effectuates the subsurface and the groundwater flow. The run-off process with rainfall exceeding a soil's infiltration capacity was suspected as the main driver of the slow ground movement phenomenon. However, when analyzing rapid and extremely rapid landslide events at Puncak Pass, a significant increase in the correlation coefficient between precipitation and displacement rate could be observed.

Wetlands are home to a great variety of flora and fauna species and provide several unique environmental functions, such as controlling floods, improving water-quality, supporting wildlife habitat, and shoreline stabilization. Detailed information on spatial distribution of wetland classes is crucial for sustainable management and resource assessment. Furthermore, hydrological monitoring of wetlands is also important for maintaining and preserving the habitat of various plant and animal species. This thesis investigates the existing knowledge and technological challenges associated with wetland mapping and monitoring and evaluates the limitations of the methodologies that have been developed to date. The study also proposes new methods to improve the characterization of these productive ecosystems using advanced remote sensing (RS) tools and data. Specifically, a comprehensive literature review on wetland monitoring using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and Interferometric SAR (InSAR) techniques is provided. The application of the InSAR technique for wetland mapping provides the following advantages: (i) the high sensitivity of interferometric coherence to land cover changes is taken into account and (ii) the exploitation of interferometric coherence for wetland classification further enhances the discrimination between similar wetland classes. A statistical analysis of the interferometric coherence and SAR backscattering variation of Canadian wetlands, which are ignored in the literature, is carried out using multi-temporal, multi-frequency, and multi-polarization SAR data. The study also examines the capability of compact polarimetry (CP) SAR data, which will be collected by the upcoming RADARSAT Constellation Mission (RCM) and will constitute the main source of SAR observation in Canada, for wetland mapping. The research in this dissertation proposes a methodology for wetland classification using the synergistic use of intensity, polarimetry, and interferometry features using a novel classification framework. Finally, this work introduces a novel model based on the deep convolutional neural network (CNN) for wetland classification that can be trained in an end-to-end scheme and is specifically designed for the classification of wetland complexes using polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) imagery. The results of the proposed methods are promising and will significantly contribute to the ongoing efforts of conservation strategies for wetlands and monitoring changes. The approaches presented in this thesis serve as frameworks, progressing towards an operational methodology for mapping wetland complexes in Canada, as well as other wetlands worldwide with similar ecological characteristics
