    Enhanced Industrial Machinery Condition Monitoring Methodology based on Novelty Detection and Multi-Modal Analysis

    This paper presents a condition-based monitoring methodology based on novelty detection applied to industrial machinery. The proposed approach includes both, the classical classification of multiple a priori known scenarios, and the innovative detection capability of new operating modes not previously available. The development of condition-based monitoring methodologies considering the isolation capabilities of unexpected scenarios represents, nowadays, a trending topic able to answer the demanding requirements of the future industrial processes monitoring systems. First, the method is based on the temporal segmentation of the available physical magnitudes, and the estimation of a set of time-based statistical features. Then, a double feature reduction stage based on Principal Component Analysis and Linear Discriminant Analysis is applied in order to optimize the classification and novelty detection performances. The posterior combination of a Feed-forward Neural Network and One-Class Support Vector Machine allows the proper interpretation of known and unknown operating conditions. The effectiveness of this novel condition monitoring scheme has been verified by experimental results obtained from an automotive industry machine.Postprint (published version

    Active control of turbulence-induced helicopter vibration

    Helicopter vibration signatures induced by severe atmospheric turbulence have been shown to differ considerably from nominal, still air vibration. The perturbations of the transmission frequency have significant implications for the design of passive and active vibration alleviation devices, which are generally tuned to the nominal vibration frequency. This thesis investigates the existence of the phenomena in several realistic atmospheric turbulence environments, generated using Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) engineering software and assimilated within a high-fidelity rotorcraft simulation, RASCAL. The RASCAL simulation is modified to calculate blade element sampling of the gust, enabling thorough, high frequency analyses of the rotor response. In a final modification, a numerical, integration-based inverse simulation algorithm, GENISA is incorporated and the augmented simulation is henceforth referred to as HISAT. Several implementation issues arise from the symbiosis, principally because of the modelling of variable rotorspeed and lead-lag motion. However, a novel technique for increasing the numerical stability margins is proposed and tested successfully. Two active vibration control schemes, higher harmonic control 'HHC' and individual blade control 'IBC', are then evaluated against a 'worst-case' sharp-edged gust field. The higher harmonic controller demonstrates a worrying lack of robustness, and actually begins to contribute to the vibration levels. Several intuitive modifications to the algorithm are proposed but only disturbance estimation is successful. A new simulation model of coupled blade motion is derived and implemented using MATLAB and is used to design a simple IBC compensator. Following bandwidth problems, a redesign is proposed using H theory which improves the controller performance. Disturbance prediction/estimation is attempted using artificial neural networks to limited success. Overall, the aims and objectives of the research are met

    An overview on structural health monitoring: From the current state-of-the-art to new bio-inspired sensing paradigms

    In the last decades, the field of structural health monitoring (SHM) has grown exponentially. Yet, several technical constraints persist, which are preventing full realization of its potential. To upgrade current state-of-the-art technologies, researchers have started to look at nature’s creations giving rise to a new field called ‘biomimetics’, which operates across the border between living and non-living systems. The highly optimised and time-tested performance of biological assemblies keeps on inspiring the development of bio-inspired artificial counterparts that can potentially outperform conventional systems. After a critical appraisal on the current status of SHM, this paper presents a review of selected works related to neural, cochlea and immune-inspired algorithms implemented in the field of SHM, including a brief survey of the advancements of bio-inspired sensor technology for the purpose of SHM. In parallel to this engineering progress, a more in-depth understanding of the most suitable biological patterns to be transferred into multimodal SHM systems is fundamental to foster new scientific breakthroughs.     Analysis and network simulations of honeybee interneurons responsive to waggle dance vibration signals

    BACKGROUND: Honeybees have long fascinated neuroscientists with their highly evolved social structure and rich behavioral repertoire. They sense air vibrations with their antennae, which is vital for several activities during foraging, like waggle dance communication and flight. GOALS: This thesis presents the investigation of the function of an identified vibration-sensitive interneuron, DL-Int-1. Primary goals were the investigation of (i) adaptations during maturation and (ii) the role of DL-Int-1 in networks encoding distance information of waggle dance vibration signals. RESULTS: Visual inspection indicated that DL-Int-1 morphologies had similar gross structure, but were translated, rotated and scaled relative to each other. To enable detailed spatial comparison, an algorithm for the spatial co-registration of neuron morphologies, Reg-MaxS-N was developed and validated. Experimental data from DL-Int-1 was provided by our Japanese collaborators. Comparison of morphologies from newly emerged adult and forager DL-Int-1 revealed minor changes in gross dendritic features and consistent, region-dependent and spatially localized changes in dendritic density. Comparison of electrophysiological response properties showed an increase in firing rate differences between stimulus and non-stimulus periods during maturation. A putative disinhibitory network in the honeybee primary auditory center was proposed based on experimental evidence. Simulations showed that the network was consistent with experimental observations and clarified the central inhibitory role of DL-Int-1 in shaping the network output. RELEVANCE: Reg-MaxS-N presents a novel approach for the spatial co-registration of morphologies. Adaptations in DL-Int-1 morphology during maturation indicate improved connectivity and signal propagation. The central role of DL-Int-1 in a disinhibitory network in the honeybee primary auditory center combined with adaptions in its response properties during maturation could indicate better encoding of distance information from waggle dance vibration sig- nals

    Prediction of the Effectiveness of Rolling Dynamic Compaction Using Artificial Intelligence Techniques and In Situ Soil Test Data

    The research presented in this thesis focuses on developing predictive tools to forecast the effectiveness of rolling dynamic compaction (RDC) in different ground conditions. Among many other soil compaction methods, RDC is a widespread technique, which involves impacting the ground with a heavy (6–12 tonnes) non-circular (3-, 4- and 5- sided) module. It provides the construction industry with an improved ground compaction capability, especially with respect to a greater influence depth and a higher speed of compaction, resulting in increased productivity when compared with traditional compaction equipment. However, to date, no rational means are available for obtaining a priori estimation of the degree of densification or the extent of the influence depth by RDC in different ground conditions. In addressing this knowledge gap, the research presented in this thesis develops robust predictive models to forecast the performance of RDC by means of the artificial intelligence (AI) techniques in the form of artificial neural networks (ANNs) and linear genetic programming (LGP), which have already been proven to be successful in a wide variety of forecasting applications in geotechnical engineering aspects. This study is focussed solely on the 4-sided, 8 tonne impact roller (BH-1300) and the AI-based models incorporate comprehensive databases consisting of in situ soil test data; specifically cone penetration test (CPT) and dynamic cone penetration (DCP) test data obtained from many ground improvement projects involving RDC. Thus, altogether, two distinct sets of optimal models: two involving ANNs – one for the CPT and the other for the DCP; and two LGP models – again, one for the CPT and the other for the DCP – are presented. The accuracy and the reliability of the optimal model predictions are assessed by subjecting them to various performance measures. Furthermore, each of the selected optimal models are examined in a parametric study, by which the generalisation ability and the robustness of the models are confirmed. In addition, the performance of the optimal ANN and LGP-based models, as well as other aspects, are compared with each other in order to assess the suitability and shortcomings of each. Consequently, a recommendation has been made of the most feasible approach for predicting the effectiveness of RDC in different ground conditions with respect to CPT and DCP test data. The models have also been disseminated via a series of mathematical formulae and/or programming code to facilitate their application in practice. It is demonstrated that the developed optimal models are accurate and reliable over a range of soil types, and thus, have been recommended with confidence. As such, the developed models provide preliminary estimates of the density improvement in the ground based on the subsurface conditions and the number of roller passes. Therefore, it is considered that the models are beneficial during the pre-planning stages, and may replace, or at the very least augment, the necessity for RDC field trials prior to fullscale construction. In addition, the analyses demonstrate that the AI techniques provide a feasible approach for non-linear modelling involving many parameters, which in turn, further encourages future applications in the broader geotechnical engineering context.
