    Disease diagnosis in smart healthcare: Innovation, technologies and applications

    To promote sustainable development, the smart city implies a global vision that merges artificial intelligence, big data, decision making, information and communication technology (ICT), and the internet-of-things (IoT). The ageing issue is an aspect that researchers, companies and government should devote efforts in developing smart healthcare innovative technology and applications. In this paper, the topic of disease diagnosis in smart healthcare is reviewed. Typical emerging optimization algorithms and machine learning algorithms are summarized. Evolutionary optimization, stochastic optimization and combinatorial optimization are covered. Owning to the fact that there are plenty of applications in healthcare, four applications in the field of diseases diagnosis (which also list in the top 10 causes of global death in 2015), namely cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, and tuberculosis, are considered.     Clustering of nonstationary data streams: a survey of fuzzy partitional methods

    YesData streams have arisen as a relevant research topic during the past decade. They are real‐time, incremental in nature, temporally ordered, massive, contain outliers, and the objects in a data stream may evolve over time (concept drift). Clustering is often one of the earliest and most important steps in the streaming data analysis workflow. A comprehensive literature is available about stream data clustering; however, less attention is devoted to the fuzzy clustering approach, even though the nonstationary nature of many data streams makes it especially appealing.     Multimodel Approaches for Plasma Glucose Estimation in Continuous Glucose Monitoring. Development of New Calibration Algorithms

    ABSTRACT Diabetes Mellitus (DM) embraces a group of metabolic diseases which main characteristic is the presence of high glucose levels in blood. It is one of the diseases with major social and health impact, both for its prevalence and also the consequences of the chronic complications that it implies. One of the research lines to improve the quality of life of people with diabetes is of technical focus. It involves several lines of research, including the development and improvement of devices to estimate "online" plasma glucose: continuous glucose monitoring systems (CGMS), both invasive and non-invasive. These devices estimate plasma glucose from sensor measurements from compartments alternative to blood. Current commercially available CGMS are minimally invasive and offer an estimation of plasma glucose from measurements in the interstitial fluid CGMS is a key component of the technical approach to build the artificial pancreas, aiming at closing the loop in combination with an insulin pump. Yet, the accuracy of current CGMS is still poor and it may partly depend on low performance of the implemented Calibration Algorithm (CA). In addition, the sensor-to-patient sensitivity is different between patients and also for the same patient in time. It is clear, then, that the development of new efficient calibration algorithms for CGMS is an interesting and challenging problem. The indirect measurement of plasma glucose through interstitial glucose is a main confounder of CGMS accuracy. Many components take part in the glucose transport dynamics. Indeed, physiology might suggest the existence of different local behaviors in the glucose transport process. For this reason, local modeling techniques may be the best option for the structure of the desired CA. Thus, similar input samples are represented by the same local model.     Radar-based Application of Pedestrian and Cyclist Micro-Doppler Signatures for Automotive Safety Systems

    Die sensorbasierte Erfassung des Nahfeldes im Kontext des hochautomatisierten Fahrens erfährt einen spürbaren Trend bei der Integration von Radarsensorik. Fortschritte in der Mikroelektronik erlauben den Einsatz von hochauflösenden Radarsensoren, die durch effiziente Verfahren sowohl im Winkel als auch in der Entfernung und im Doppler die Messgenauigkeit kontinuierlich ansteigen lassen. Dadurch ergeben sich neuartige Möglichkeiten bei der Bestimmung der geometrischen und kinematischen Beschaffenheit ausgedehnter Ziele im Fahrzeugumfeld, die zur gezielten Entwicklung von automotiven Sicherheitssystemen herangezogen werden können. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit werden ungeschützte Verkehrsteilnehmer wie Fußgänger und Radfahrer mittels eines hochauflösenden Automotive-Radars analysiert. Dabei steht die Erscheinung des Mikro-Doppler-Effekts, hervorgerufen durch das hohe Maß an kinematischen Freiheitsgraden der Objekte, im Vordergrund der Betrachtung. Die durch den Mikro-Doppler-Effekt entstehenden charakteristischen Radar-Signaturen erlauben eine detailliertere Perzeption der Objekte und können in direkten Zusammenhang zu ihren aktuellen Bewegungszuständen gesetzt werden. Es werden neuartige Methoden vorgestellt, die die geometrischen und kinematischen Ausdehnungen der Objekte berücksichtigen und echtzeitfähige Ansätze zur Klassifikation und Verhaltensindikation realisieren. Wird ein ausgedehntes Ziel (z.B. Radfahrer) von einem Radarsensor detektiert, können aus dessen Mikro-Doppler-Signatur wesentliche Eigenschaften bezüglich seines Bewegungszustandes innerhalb eines Messzyklus erfasst werden. Die Geschwindigkeitsverteilungen der sich drehenden Räder erlauben eine adaptive Eingrenzung der Tretbewegung, deren Verhalten essentielle Merkmale im Hinblick auf eine vorausschauende Unfallprädiktion aufweist. Ferner unterliegen ausgedehnte Radarziele einer Orientierungsabhängigkeit, die deren geometrischen und kinematischen Profile direkt beeinflusst. Dies kann sich sowohl negativ auf die Klassifikations-Performance als auch auf die Verwertbarkeit von Parametern auswirken, die eine Absichtsbekundung des Radarziels konstituieren. Am Beispiel des Radfahrers wird hierzu ein Verfahren vorgestellt, das die orientierungsabhängigen Parameter in Entfernung und Doppler normalisiert und die gemessenen Mehrdeutigkeiten kompensiert. Ferner wird in dieser Arbeit eine Methodik vorgestellt, die auf Grundlage des Mikro- Doppler-Profils eines Fußgängers dessen Beinbewegungen über die Zeit schätzt (Tracking) und wertvolle Objektinformationen hinsichtlich seines Bewegungsverhaltens offenbart. Dazu wird ein Bewegungsmodell entwickelt, das die nichtlineare Fortbewegung des Beins approximiert und dessen hohes Maß an biomechanischer Variabilität abbildet. Durch die Einbeziehung einer wahrscheinlichkeitsbasierten Datenassoziation werden die Radar-Detektionen ihren jeweils hervorrufenden Quellen (linkes und rechtes Bein) zugeordnet und eine Trennung der Gliedmaßen realisiert. Advances in microelectronics allow the use of high-resolution radar sensors that continuously increase measurement accuracy through efficient processes in angle as well as distance and Doppler. This opens up novel possibilities in determining the geometric and kinematic nature of extended targets in the vehicle environment, which can be used for the specific development of automotive safety systems. In this work, vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists are analyzed using a high-resolution automotive radar. The focus is on the appearance of the micro-Doppler effect, caused by the objects’ high kinematic degree of freedom. The characteristic radar signatures produced by the micro-Doppler effect allow a clearer perception of the objects and can be directly related to their current state of motion. Novel methods are presented that consider the geometric and kinematic extents of the objects and realize real-time approaches to classification and behavioral indication. When a radar sensor detects an extended target (e.g., bicyclist), its motion state’s fundamental properties can be captured from its micro-Doppler signature within a measurement cycle. The spinning wheels’ velocity distributions allow an adaptive containment of the pedaling motion, whose behavior exhibits essential characteristics concerning predictive accident prediction. Furthermore, extended radar targets are subject to orientation dependence, directly affecting their geometric and kinematic profiles. This can negatively affect both the classification performance and the usability of parameters constituting the radar target’s intention statement. For this purpose, using the cyclist as an example, a method is presented that normalizes the orientation-dependent parameters in range and Doppler and compensates for the measured ambiguities. Furthermore, this paper presents a methodology that estimates a pedestrian’s leg motion over time (tracking) based on the pedestrian’s micro-Doppler profile and reveals valuable object information regarding his motion behavior. To this end, a motion model is developed that approximates the leg’s nonlinear locomotion and represents its high degree of biomechanical variability. By incorporating likelihood-based data association, radar detections are assigned to their respective evoking sources (left and right leg), and limb separation is realized. In contrast to previous tracking methods, the presented methodology shows an increase in the object information’s accuracy.     Motion Segmentation Aided Super Resolution Image Reconstruction

    This dissertation addresses Super Resolution (SR) Image Reconstruction focusing on motion segmentation. The main thrust is Information Complexity guided Gaussian Mixture Models (GMMs) for Statistical Background Modeling. In the process of developing our framework we also focus on two other topics; motion trajectories estimation toward global and local scene change detections and image reconstruction to have high resolution (HR) representations of the moving regions. Such a framework is used for dynamic scene understanding and recognition of individuals and threats with the help of the image sequences recorded with either stationary or non-stationary camera systems. We introduce a new technique called Information Complexity guided Statistical Background Modeling. Thus, we successfully employ GMMs, which are optimal with respect to information complexity criteria. Moving objects are segmented out through background subtraction which utilizes the computed background model. This technique produces superior results to competing background modeling strategies. The state-of-the-art SR Image Reconstruction studies combine the information from a set of unremarkably different low resolution (LR) images of static scene to construct an HR representation. The crucial challenge not handled in these studies is accumulating the corresponding information from highly displaced moving objects. In this aspect, a framework of SR Image Reconstruction of the moving objects with such high level of displacements is developed. Our assumption is that LR images are different from each other due to local motion of the objects and the global motion of the scene imposed by non-stationary imaging system. Contrary to traditional SR approaches, we employed several steps. These steps are; the suppression of the global motion, motion segmentation accompanied by background subtraction to extract moving objects, suppression of the local motion of the segmented out regions, and super-resolving accumulated information coming from moving objects rather than the whole scene. This results in a reliable offline SR Image Reconstruction tool which handles several types of dynamic scene changes, compensates the impacts of camera systems, and provides data redundancy through removing the background. The framework proved to be superior to the state-of-the-art algorithms which put no significant effort toward dynamic scene representation of non-stationary camera systems

    Nonsmooth optimization models and algorithms for data clustering and visualization

    Cluster analysis deals with the problem of organization of a collection of patterns into clusters based on a similarity measure. Various distance functions can be used to define this measure. Clustering problems with the similarity measure defined by the squared Euclidean distance have been studied extensively over the last five decades. However, problems with other Minkowski norms have attracted significantly less attention. The use of different similarity measures may help to identify different cluster structures of a data set. This in turn may help to significantly improve the decision making process. High dimensional data visualization is another important task in the field of data mining and pattern recognition. To date, the principal component analysis and the self-organizing maps techniques have been used to solve such problems.     Evolutionary framework for DNA Microarry Cluster Analysis

    En esta investigación se propone un framework evolutivo donde se fusionan un método de clustering jerárquico basado en un modelo evolutivo, un conjunto de medidas de validación de agrupamientos (clusters) de datos y una herramienta de visualización de clusterings. El objetivo es crear un marco apropiado para la extracción de conocimiento a partir de datos provenientes de DNA-microarrays. Por una parte, el modelo evolutivo de clustering de nuestro framework es una alternativa novedosa que intenta resolver algunos de los problemas presentes en los métodos de clustering existentes. Por otra parte, nuestra alternativa de visualización de clusterings, materializada en una herramienta, incorpora nuevas propiedades y nuevos componentes de visualización, lo cual permite validar y analizar los resultados de la tarea de clustering.
