    Impact of New Method for Laying Separate Sewer System on Pavement Layers

    The method of installing underground infrastructure has a significant influence on road resistance and performance under live loads such as traffic. This research presents a new method for laying separate sewer systems by using one trench to sit both sanitary pipe and storm pipe and considers the effects of this approach on the pavement strength. Experimental tests have been conducted in the laboratory using a trench 2.5x0.45x1 metre to install two pipes one over the other (sanitary pipe in the bottom and storm pipe on top). Two cases have tested, the first case using 5 cm surface layer of cold mix asphalt while the second is using soil. A series of loads were applied to test the behaviour of this new system and its effects on the pavement surface layer and the buried pipe. The comparison between the rut print of the live load on the soil layer and the pavement layer was conducted. Results demonstrated that using the cold mix asphalt is still insufficient to provide enough safety to protect buried pipe as a reason of needing to relatively long time to acquire high stiffness.     Ein Molekül-Atom-Datenmodell für Non-Standard-Anwendungen : Anwendungsanalyse, Datenmodellentwurf und Implementierungskonzepte

    Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist die Erarbeitung und Nutzbarmachung von Datenbankkonzepten für sog. Non-Standard-Anwendungen. Darunter versteht man im OB-Bereich Anwendungen aus den Gebieten CAD/CAM, VLSI-Entwurf, Software-Entwicklung, Büroautomatisierung, Expertensysteme etc. Die zentralen Fragestellungen, zu denen es Antworten zu finden gilt, sind: - Welche Anforderungen werden von den Non-Standard-Anwendungen an die Datenhaltung gestellt? - Wie sehen dazu passende Architekturen und Datenmodelle für NDBS (das sind DBS für Non-Standard-Anwendungen) aus? - Nach welchen Konzepten sind solche NDBS zu entwerten und zu implementieren? Dazu werden verschiedene OB-basierte Prototypen analysiert und vergleichend einander gegenübergestellt. Im einzelnen wurden basierend auf konventionellen Datenbanksystemen verschiedenen Typs (Netzwerk- und Relationenmodell) Anwendungssysteme aus unterschiedlichen ingenieurwissenschaftlichen Bereichen (3D-Modellierung, Verwaltung geographischer Daten und VLSI-Entwurfswerkzeug) sowie aus dem Expertensystembereich (Diagnosesystem) entwickelt; ihr Leistungsverhalten wurde unter einer praxisnahen Last aufgezeichnet und detailliert untersucht. Ausgehend von diesen Analyse- und Vergleichsergebnissen wird ein Anforderungskatalog erstellt, der konkrete Aussagen über die Datenstrukturen der Anwendungsobjekte und die zugehörigen Verarbeitungscharakteristika zusammenfaßt

    An investigation of computer based nominal data record linkage

    The Internet now provides access to vast volumes of nominal data (data associated with names e. g. birth/death records, parish records, text articles, multimedia) collected for a range of different purposes. This research focuses on parish registers containing baptism, marriage, and burial records. Mining these data resources involves linkage investigating as to how two records are related with regards to attributes like surname, spatio-temporal location, legal association and inter-relationships. Furthermore, as well as handling the implicit constraints of nominal data, such a system must also be able to handle automatically a range of temporal and spatial rules and constraints. The research examines the linkage rules that apply and how such rules interact. In this investigation a report is given of the current practices in several disciplines (e. g. history, demography, genealogy, and epidemiology) and how these are implemented in current computer and database systems. The practical aspects of this study, and the workbench approach proposed are centred on the extensive Lancashire & Cheshire Parish Register archive held on the MIMAS database computer located at Manchester University. The research also proposes how these findings can have wider applications. This thesis describes some initial research into this problem. It describes three prototypes of nominal data workbench that allow the specification and examination of several linkage types and discusses the merits of alternative name matching methods, name grouping techniques and method comparisons. The conclusion is that in the cases examined so far, effective nominal data linkage is essentially a query optimisation process. The process is made more efficient if linkage specific indexes exist, and suggests that query re-organization based on these indexes, though a complex process, is entirely feasible. To facilitate the use of indexes and to guide the optimization process, the work suggests the use of formal ontologies
