However, its implementation varies widely depending on the research domain: namely, language description, knowledge representation, cognitive modelling, and problem solving. These various uses of constraints offer complementary views on intelligent mechanisms. For example, in-depth descriptions implementing constraints are used in linguistics to filter out syntactic or discursive structures by means of dedicated description languages and constraint ranking. In computer science, the constraint programming paradigm views constraints as a whole, which can be used, for example, to build specific structures. Finally, in psycholinguistics, experiments are carried out to investigate the role of constraints within cognitive processes (both in comprehension and production), with various applications such as dialog modelling for people with disabilities.     Extracting Selected Phrases through Constraint Satisfaction

    International audienceWe present in this paper a CHR based parsing methodology for parsing Property Grammars. This approach constitutes a flexible parsing technology in which the notions of derivation and hierarchy give way to the more flexible notion of constraint satisfaction between categories. It becomes then possible to describe the syntactic characteristics of a category in terms of satisfied and violated constraints.Different applications can take advantage of such flexibility, in particular in the case where information comes from part of the input and requires the identification of selected phrases such as NP, PP, etc. Our method presents two main advantages: first, there is no need to build an entire syntactic structure, only the selected phrases can be extracted. Moreover, such extraction can be done even from incomplete or erroneous text: indication of possible kinds of error or incompleteness can be given together with the proposed analysis for the phrases being sought

    Implementing probabilistic abductive logic programming with Constraint Handling Rules

    Abstract. A class of Probabilistic Abductive Logic Programs (PALPs) is introduced and an implementation is developed in CHR for solving abductive problems, providing minimal explanations with their probabilities. Both all-explanations and most-probable-explanations versions are given. Compared with other probabilistic versions of abductive logic programming, the approach is characterized by higher generality and a flexible and adaptable architecture which incorporates integrity constraints and interaction with external constraint solvers. A PALP is transformed in a systematic way into a CHR program which serves as a query interpreter, and the resulting CHR code describes in a highly concise way, the strategies applied in the search for explanations
