    Modeling of Biological Intelligence for SCM System Optimization

    This article summarizes some methods from biological intelligence for modeling and optimization of supply chain management (SCM) systems, including genetic algorithms, evolutionary programming, differential evolution, swarm intelligence, artificial immune, and other biological intelligence related methods. An SCM system is adaptive, dynamic, open self-organizing, which is maintained by flows of information, materials, goods, funds, and energy. Traditional methods for modeling and optimizing complex SCM systems require huge amounts of computing resources, and biological intelligence-based solutions can often provide valuable alternatives for efficiently solving problems. The paper summarizes the recent related methods for the design and optimization of SCM systems, which covers the most widely used genetic algorithms and other evolutionary algorithms

    The Study of the Optimal Parameter Settings in a Hospital Supply Chain System in Taiwan

    This study proposed the optimal parameter settings for the hospital supply chain system (HSCS) when either the total system cost (TSC) or patient safety level (PSL) (or both simultaneously) was considered as the measure of the HSCS’s performance. Four parameters were considered in the HSCS: safety stock, maximum inventory level, transportation capacity, and the reliability of the HSCS. A full-factor experimental design was used to simulate an HSCS for the purpose of collecting data. The response surface method (RSM) was used to construct the regression model, and a genetic algorithm (GA) was applied to obtain the optimal parameter settings for the HSCS. The results show that the best method of obtaining the optimal parameter settings for the HSCS is the simultaneous consideration of both the TSC and the PSL to measure performance. Also, the results of sensitivity analysis based on the optimal parameter settings were used to derive adjustable strategies for the decision-makers

    Multi-objective green supply chain optimization with a new hybrid memetic algorithm using the Taguchi method

    AbstractThe aim of most supply chain optimization problems is to minimize the total cost of the supply chain. However, since environmental protection is of concern to the public, a green supply chain, because of its minimum effect on nature, has been seriously considered as a solution to this concern. This paper addresses the modeling and solving of a supply chain design for annual cost minimization, while considering environmental effects. This paper considers the cost elements of the supply chain, such as transportation, holding and backorder costs, and also, the environmental effect components of the supply chain, such as the amount of NO2, CO and volatile organic particles produced by facilities and transportation in the supply chain. Considering these two components (cost and environmental effects), we propose a multi-objective optimization problem. In this model, the facilities and transportation options have a capacity constraint and, at each level of the chain, we have several transportation options with different costs. We utilize a memetic algorithm in combination with the Taguchi method to solve this complex model. We also propose a novel decoding method and priority based algorithm for coding the solution chromosome. The performance of the proposed solution method has been examined against the hybrid genetic Taguchi algorithm (GATA) on a set of numeric instances, and results indicate that the proposed method can effectively provide better results than previous solution procedures

    A Large Neighborhood Search heuristic for Supply Chain Network Design

    24 pagesMany exact or approximate solution techniques have been used to solve facility location problems and more generally supply chain network design problems. Yet, the Large Neighborhood Search technique (LNS) has almost never been proposed for solving such problems, although it has proven its efficiency and flexibility in solving other complex combinatorial optimization problems. In this paper we propose an LNS framework for solving a four-layer single period multi-product supply chain network design problem involving multimodal transport. Location decisions for intermediate facilities (e.g. plants and distribution centers) are made using the LNS while transportation modes and product flow decisions are determined by a greedy heuristic. As a post-optimization step, we also use linear programming to determine the optimal product flows once the logistics network is fixed. Extensive experiments based on generated instances of different sizes and characteristics show the effectiveness of the method compared with a state-of-the-art solver

    Designing multi-period supply chain network considering risk and emission: a multi-objective approach

    This research formulates a multi-objective problem (MOP) for supply chain network (SCN) design by incorporating the issues of social relationship, carbon emissions, and supply chain risks such as disruption and opportunism. The proposed MOP includes three conflicting objectives: maximization of total profit, minimization of supply disruption and opportunism risks, and minimization of carbon emission considering a number of supply chain constraints. Furthermore, this research analyses the effect of social relationship levels between different tiers of SCN on the profitability, risk, and emission over the time. In this regard, we focus on responding to the following questions. (1) How does the evolving social relationship affect the objectives of the supply chain (SC)? (2) How do the upstream firms’ relationships affect the relationships of downstream firms, and how these relationships influence the objectives of the SC? (3) How does the supply disruption risk interact with the opportunism risk through supply chain relationships, and how these risks affect the objectives of the SC? (4) How do these three conflicting objectives trade-off? A Pareto-based multi-objective evolutionary algorithm–non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II) has been employed to solve the presented problem. In order to improve the quality of solutions, tuning parameters of the NSGA-II are modulated using Taguchi approach. An illustrative example is presented to manifest the capability of the model and the algorithm. The results obtained evince the robust performance of the proposed MOP

    Modelling Integrated Multi-item Supplier Selection with Shipping Frequencies

    There are many benefits for coordination of multiple suppliers when single supplier cannot satisfy buyer demands.  In addition, buyer needs to purchase multiple items in a real supply chain. So, a model that satisfies these requests has many advantages. We extend the existing approaches in the literature that assume all suppliers need to be put on a common replenishment cycle and each supplier delivers exactly once in a cycle. More specifically, inspired by approaches that perform well for the Economic Lot Scheduling Problem, we assume an integer number of times a supplier can ship available items in an overall replenishment cycle. Because of complexity issue, a new approach based on genetic algorithm is employed to solve the presented model. Results depict that new model is more beneficial and practical
