    A Framework for Dynamic Terrain with Application in Off-road Ground Vehicle Simulations

    The dissertation develops a framework for the visualization of dynamic terrains for use in interactive real-time 3D systems. Terrain visualization techniques may be classified as either static or dynamic. Static terrain solutions simulate rigid surface types exclusively; whereas dynamic solutions can also represent non-rigid surfaces. Systems that employ a static terrain approach lack realism due to their rigid nature. Disregarding the accurate representation of terrain surface interaction is rationalized because of the inherent difficulties associated with providing runtime dynamism. Nonetheless, dynamic terrain systems are a more correct solution because they allow the terrain database to be modified at run-time for the purpose of deforming the surface. Many established techniques in terrain visualization rely on invalid assumptions and weak computational models that hinder the use of dynamic terrain. Moreover, many existing techniques do not exploit the capabilities offered by current computer hardware. In this research, we present a component framework for terrain visualization that is useful in research, entertainment, and simulation systems. In addition, we present a novel method for deforming the terrain that can be used in real-time, interactive systems. The development of a component framework unifies disparate works under a single architecture. The high-level nature of the framework makes it flexible and adaptable for developing a variety of systems, independent of the static or dynamic nature of the solution. Currently, there are only a handful of documented deformation techniques and, in particular, none make explicit use of graphics hardware. The approach developed by this research offloads extra work to the graphics processing unit; in an effort to alleviate the overhead associated with deforming the terrain. Off-road ground vehicle simulation is used as an application domain to demonstrate the practical nature of the framework and the deformation technique. In order to realistically simulate terrain surface interactivity with the vehicle, the solution balances visual fidelity and speed. Accurately depicting terrain surface interactivity in off-road ground vehicle simulations improves visual realism; thereby, increasing the significance and worth of the application. Systems in academia, government, and commercial institutes can make use of the research findings to achieve the real-time display of interactive terrain surfaces

    On the modelling of ultrasonic testing using boundary integral equation methods

    Ultrasonic nondestructive testing has important applications in, for example, the nuclear power and aerospace industries, where it is used to inspect safety-critical parts for flaws. For safe and reliable testing, mathematical models of the ultrasonic measurement systems are invaluable tools. In this thesis such measurement models are developed for the ultrasonic testing for defects located near non-planar surfaces. The applications in mind are the testing of nuclear power plant components such as thick-walled pipes with diameter transitions, pipe connections, etc. The models use solution methods based on frequency domain boundary integral equation methods, with a focus on analytical approaches for the defects and regularized boundary element methods for the non-planar surfaces. A major benefit of the solution methods is the ability to provide accurate results both for low, intermediate and high frequencies. The solution methods are incorporated into a framework of transmitting probe models based on prescribing the traction underneath the probe and receiving probe models based on electromechanical reciprocity. Time traces are obtained by applying inverse temporal Fourier transforms, and it is also shown how calibration and effects of material damping can be included in the models

    Efficient and accurate simulations of deformable particles immersed in a fluid using a combined immersed boundary lattice Boltzmann finite element method

    The deformation of an initially spherical capsule, freely suspended in simple shear flow, can be computed analytically in the limit of small deformations [D. Barthes-Biesel, J. M. Rallison, The Time-Dependent Deformation of a Capsule Freely Suspended in a Linear Shear Flow, J. Fluid Mech. 113 (1981) 251-267]. Those analytic approximations are used to study the influence of the mesh tessellation method, the spatial resolution, and the discrete delta function of the immersed boundary method on the numerical results obtained by a coupled immersed boundary lattice Boltzmann finite element method. For the description of the capsule membrane, a finite element method and the Skalak constitutive model [R. Skalak et al., Strain Energy Function of Red Blood Cell Membranes, Biophys. J. 13 (1973) 245-264] have been employed. Our primary goal is the investigation of the presented model for small resolutions to provide a sound basis for efficient but accurate simulations of multiple deformable particles immersed in a fluid. We come to the conclusion that details of the membrane mesh, as tessellation method and resolution, play only a minor role. The hydrodynamic resolution, i.e., the width of the discrete delta function, can significantly influence the accuracy of the simulations. The discretization of the delta function introduces an artificial length scale, which effectively changes the radius and the deformability of the capsule. We discuss possibilities of reducing the computing time of simulations of deformable objects immersed in a fluid while maintaining high accuracy.Comment: 23 pages, 14 figures, 3 table

    A novel haptic model and environment for maxillofacial surgical operation planning and manipulation

    This paper presents a practical method and a new haptic model to support manipulations of bones and their segments during the planning of a surgical operation in a virtual environment using a haptic interface. To perform an effective dental surgery it is important to have all the operation related information of the patient available beforehand in order to plan the operation and avoid any complications. A haptic interface with a virtual and accurate patient model to support the planning of bone cuts is therefore critical, useful and necessary for the surgeons. The system proposed uses DICOM images taken from a digital tomography scanner and creates a mesh model of the filtered skull, from which the jaw bone can be isolated for further use. A novel solution for cutting the bones has been developed and it uses the haptic tool to determine and define the bone-cutting plane in the bone, and this new approach creates three new meshes of the original model. Using this approach the computational power is optimized and a real time feedback can be achieved during all bone manipulations. During the movement of the mesh cutting, a novel friction profile is predefined in the haptical system to simulate the force feedback feel of different densities in the bone

    A sharp interface isogeometric strategy for moving boundary problems

    The proposed methodology is first utilized to model stationary and propagating cracks. The crack face is enriched with the Heaviside function which captures the displacement discontinuity. Meanwhile, the crack tips are enriched with asymptotic displacement functions to reproduce the tip singularity. The enriching degrees of freedom associated with the crack tips are chosen as stress intensity factors (SIFs) such that these quantities can be directly extracted from the solution without a-posteriori integral calculation. As a second application, the Stefan problem is modeled with a hybrid function/derivative enriched interface. Since the interface geometry is explicitly defined, normals and curvatures can be analytically obtained at any point on the interface, allowing for complex boundary conditions dependent on curvature or normal to be naturally imposed. Thus, the enriched approximation naturally captures the interfacial discontinuity in temperature gradient and enables the imposition of Gibbs-Thomson condition during solidification simulation. The shape optimization through configuration of finite-sized heterogeneities is lastly studied. The optimization relies on the recently derived configurational derivative that describes the sensitivity of an arbitrary objective with respect to arbitrary design modifications of a heterogeneity inserted into a domain. The THB-splines, which serve as the underlying approximation, produce sufficiently smooth solution near the boundaries of the heterogeneity for accurate calculation of the configurational derivatives.
