Intelligent systems in manufacturing: current developments and future prospects
Global competition and rapidly changing customer requirements are demanding increasing changes in manufacturing environments. Enterprises are required to constantly redesign their products and continuously reconfigure their manufacturing systems. Traditional approaches to manufacturing systems do not fully satisfy this new situation. Many authors have proposed that artificial intelligence will bring the flexibility and efficiency needed by manufacturing systems. This paper is a review of artificial intelligence techniques used in manufacturing systems. The paper first defines the components of a simplified intelligent manufacturing systems (IMS), the different Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques to be considered and then shows how these AI techniques are used for the components of IMS
A Survey of Automated Process Planning Approaches in Machining
Global industrial trend is shifting towards next industrial revolution Industry 4.0. It is becoming increasingly important for modern manufacturing industries to develop a Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) system by integrating the various operational and information processing functions in design and manufacturing. In spite of being active in research for almost four decades, it is clear that new functionalities are needed to integrate and realize a completely optimal process planning which can be fully compliant towards Smart Factory. In order to develop a CIM system, Computer Aided Process Planning (CAPP) plays a key role and therefore it has been the focus of many researchers. In order to gain insight into the current state-of-the-art of CAPP methodologies, 96 research papers have been reviewed. Subsequent sections discuss the different CAPP approaches adopted by researchers to automate different process planning tasks. This paper aims at addressing the key approaches involved and future directions towards Smart Manufacturing
A Survey of Adaptive Resonance Theory Neural Network Models for Engineering Applications
This survey samples from the ever-growing family of adaptive resonance theory
(ART) neural network models used to perform the three primary machine learning
modalities, namely, unsupervised, supervised and reinforcement learning. It
comprises a representative list from classic to modern ART models, thereby
painting a general picture of the architectures developed by researchers over
the past 30 years. The learning dynamics of these ART models are briefly
described, and their distinctive characteristics such as code representation,
long-term memory and corresponding geometric interpretation are discussed.
Useful engineering properties of ART (speed, configurability, explainability,
parallelization and hardware implementation) are examined along with current
challenges. Finally, a compilation of online software libraries is provided. It
is expected that this overview will be helpful to new and seasoned ART
researchers
Neurosymbolic AI for Reasoning on Graph Structures: A Survey
Neurosymbolic AI is an increasingly active area of research which aims to
combine symbolic reasoning methods with deep learning to generate models with
both high predictive performance and some degree of human-level
comprehensibility. As knowledge graphs are becoming a popular way to represent
heterogeneous and multi-relational data, methods for reasoning on graph
structures have attempted to follow this neurosymbolic paradigm. Traditionally,
such approaches have utilized either rule-based inference or generated
representative numerical embeddings from which patterns could be extracted.
However, several recent studies have attempted to bridge this dichotomy in ways
that facilitate interpretability, maintain performance, and integrate expert
knowledge. Within this article, we survey a breadth of methods that perform
neurosymbolic reasoning tasks on graph structures. To better compare the
various methods, we propose a novel taxonomy by which we can classify them.
Specifically, we propose three major categories: (1) logically-informed
embedding approaches, (2) embedding approaches with logical constraints, and
(3) rule-learning approaches. Alongside the taxonomy, we provide a tabular
overview of the approaches and links to their source code, if available, for
more direct comparison. Finally, we discuss the applications on which these
methods were primarily used and propose several prospective directions toward
which this new field of research could evolve.Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures, 1 table, currently under review. Corresponding

An empirical study on the various stock market prediction methods
Investment in the stock market is one of the much-admired investment actions. However, prediction of the stock market has remained a hard task because of the non-linearity exhibited. The non-linearity is due to multiple affecting factors such as global economy, political situations, sector performance, economic numbers, foreign institution investment, domestic institution investment, and so on. A proper set of such representative factors must be analyzed to make an efficient prediction model. Marginal improvement of prediction accuracy can be gainful for investors. This review provides a detailed analysis of research papers presenting stock market prediction techniques. These techniques are assessed in the time series analysis and sentiment analysis section. A detailed discussion on research gaps and issues is presented. The reviewed articles are analyzed based on the use of prediction techniques, optimization algorithms, feature selection methods, datasets, toolset, evaluation matrices, and input parameters. The techniques are further investigated to analyze relations of prediction methods with feature selection algorithm, datasets, feature selection methods, and input parameters. In addition, major problems raised in the present techniques are also discussed. This survey will provide researchers with deeper insight into various aspects of current stock market prediction methods
Intelligent Computing: The Latest Advances, Challenges and Future
Computing is a critical driving force in the development of human
civilization. In recent years, we have witnessed the emergence of intelligent
computing, a new computing paradigm that is reshaping traditional computing and
promoting digital revolution in the era of big data, artificial intelligence
and internet-of-things with new computing theories, architectures, methods,
systems, and applications. Intelligent computing has greatly broadened the
scope of computing, extending it from traditional computing on data to
increasingly diverse computing paradigms such as perceptual intelligence,
cognitive intelligence, autonomous intelligence, and human-computer fusion
intelligence. Intelligence and computing have undergone paths of different
evolution and development for a long time but have become increasingly
intertwined in recent years: intelligent computing is not only
intelligence-oriented but also intelligence-driven. Such cross-fertilization
has prompted the emergence and rapid advancement of intelligent computing.
Intelligent computing is still in its infancy and an abundance of innovations
in the theories, systems, and applications of intelligent computing are
expected to occur soon. We present the first comprehensive survey of literature
on intelligent computing, covering its theory fundamentals, the technological
fusion of intelligence and computing, important applications, challenges, and
future perspectives. We believe that this survey is highly timely and will
provide a comprehensive reference and cast valuable insights into intelligent
computing for academic and industrial researchers and practitioners
Feature technology and its applications in computer integrated manufacturing
A Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of University of LutonComputer aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) has been a focal research area for the manufacturing industry. Genuine CAD/CAM integration is necessary to make products of higher quality with lower cost and shorter lead times. Although CAD and CAM have been extensively used in industry, effective CAD/CAM integration has not been implemented. The major obstacles of CAD/CAM integration are the representation of design and process knowledge and the adaptive ability of computer aided process planning (CAPP). This research is aimed to develop a feature-based CAD/CAM integration methodology. Artificial intelligent techniques such as neural networks, heuristic algorithms, genetic algorithms and fuzzy logics are used to tackle problems. The activities considered include: 1) Component design based on a number of standard feature classes with validity check. A feature classification for machining application is defined adopting ISO 10303-STEP AP224 from a multi-viewpoint of design and manufacture. 2) Search of interacting features and identification of features relationships. A
heuristic algorithm has been proposed in order to resolve interacting features. The algorithm analyses the interacting entity between each feature pair, making the process simpler and more efficient. 3) Recognition of new features formed by interacting features. A novel neural network-based technique for feature recognition has been designed, which solves the problems of ambiguity and overlaps. 4) Production of a feature based model for the component. 5) Generation of a suitable process plan covering selection of machining operations, grouping of machining operations and process sequencing. A hybrid feature-based CAPP has been developed using neural network, genetic algorithm and fuzzy evaluating techniques
