    Facilitating prosociality through technology: Design to promote digital volunteerism

    Volunteerism covers many activities involving no financial rewards for volunteers but which contribute to the common good. There is existing work in designing technology for volunteerism in HumanComputer Interaction (HCI) and related disciplines that focuses on motivation to improve performance, but it does not account for volunteer wellbeing. Here, I investigate digital volunteerism in three case studies with a focus on volunteer motivation, engagement, and wellbeing. My research involved volunteers and others in the volunteering context to generate recommendations for a volunteer-centric design for digital volunteerism. The thesis has three aims: 1. To investigate motivational aspects critical for enhancing digital volunteers’ experiences 2. To identify digital platform attributes linked to volunteer wellbeing 3. To create guidelines for effectively supporting volunteer engagement in digital volunteering platforms In the first case study I investigate the design of a chat widget for volunteers working in an organisation with a view to develop a design that improves their workflow and wellbeing. The second case study investigates the needs, motivations, and wellbeing of volunteers who help medical students improve their medical communication skills. An initial mixed-methods study was followed by an experiment comparing two design strategies to improve volunteer relatedness; an important indicator of wellbeing. The third case study looks into volunteer needs, experiences, motivations, and wellbeing with a focus on volunteer identity and meaning-making on a science-based research platform. I then analyse my findings from these case studies using the lens of care ethics to derive critical insights for design. The key contributions of this thesis are design strategies and critical insights, and a volunteer-centric design framework to enhance the motivation, wellbeing and engagement of digital volunteers

    This work addresses the theme of Japanese religions in order to rethink theories and practices pertaining to the field of Religious Education. Through an interdisciplinary framework that combines the study of religions, didactics and intercultural education, this book puts the case study of Religious Education in England in front of two ‘challenges’ in order to reveal hidden spots, tackle unquestioned assumptions and highlight problematic areas. These ‘challenges’, while focusing primarily on Japanese religions, are addressed within the wider contexts of other East Asian traditions and of the modern historical exchanges with the Euro-American societies. As result, a model for teaching Japanese and other East Asian religions is discussed and proposed in order to fruitfully engage issues such as orientalism, occidentalism, interculturality and critical thinking

    Evaluating footwear “in the wild”: Examining wrap and lace trail shoe closures during trail running

    Trail running participation has grown over the last two decades. As a result, there have been an increasing number of studies examining the sport. Despite these increases, there is a lack of understanding regarding the effects of footwear on trail running biomechanics in ecologically valid conditions. The purpose of our study was to evaluate how a Wrap vs. Lace closure (on the same shoe) impacts running biomechanics on a trail. Thirty subjects ran a trail loop in each shoe while wearing a global positioning system (GPS) watch, heart rate monitor, inertial measurement units (IMUs), and plantar pressure insoles. The Wrap closure reduced peak foot eversion velocity (measured via IMU), which has been associated with fit. The Wrap closure also increased heel contact area, which is also associated with fit. This increase may be associated with the subjective preference for the Wrap. Lastly, runners had a small but significant increase in running speed in the Wrap shoe with no differences in heart rate nor subjective exertion. In total, the Wrap closure fit better than the Lace closure on a variety of terrain. This study demonstrates the feasibility of detecting meaningful biomechanical differences between footwear features in the wild using statistical tools and study design. Evaluating footwear in ecologically valid environments often creates additional variance in the data. This variance should not be treated as noise; instead, it is critical to capture this additional variance and challenges of ecologically valid terrain if we hope to use biomechanics to impact the development of new products

    Ab Initio Language Teaching in British Higher Education

    Drawing extensively on the expertise of teachers of German in universities across the UK, this volume offers an overview of recent trends, new pedagogical approaches and practical guidance for teaching at beginners level in the higher education classroom. At a time when entries for UK school exams in modern foreign languages are decreasing, this book serves the urgent need for research and guidance on ab initio learning and teaching in HE.     Recent progress in piezotronic sensors based on one-dimensional zinc oxide nanostructures and its regularly ordered arrays: from design to application

    Piezotronic sensors and self-powered gadgets are highly sought-after for flexible, wearable, and intelligent electronics for their applications in cutting-edge healthcare and human-machine interfaces. With the advantages of a well-known piezoelectric effect, excellent mechanical properties, and emerging nanotechnology applications, one-dimensional (1D) ZnO nanostructures organized in the form of a regular array have been regarded as one of the most promising inorganic active materials for piezotronics. This report intends to review the recent developments of 1D ZnO nanostructure arrays for multifunctional piezotronic sensors. Prior to discussing rational design and fabrication approaches for piezotronic devices in precisely controlled dimensions, well-established synthesis methods for high-quality and well-controlled 1D ZnO nanostructures are addressed. The challenges associated with the well-aligned, site-specific synthesis of 1D ZnO nanostructures, development trends of piezotronic devices, advantages of an ordered array of 1D ZnO in device performances, exploring new sensing mechanisms, incorporating new functionalities by constructing heterostructures, the development of novel flexible device integration technology, the deployment of novel synergistic strategies in piezotronic device performances, and potential multifunctional applications are covered. A brief evaluation of the end products, such as small-scale miniaturized unconventional power sources in sensors, high-resolution image sensors, and personalized healthcare medical devices, is also included. The paper is summarized towards the conclusion by outlining the present difficulties and promising future directions. This study will provide guidance for future research directions in 1D ZnO nanostructure-based piezotronics, which will hasten the development of multifunctional devices, sensors, chips for human-machine interfaces, displays, and self-powered systems
