    Single Tree Detection from Airborne Laser Scanning Data: A Stochastic Approach

    Characterizing and monitoring forests are of great scientific and managerial interests, such as understanding the global carbon circle, biodiversity conservation and management of natural resources. As an alternative or compliment to traditional remote sensing techniques, airborne laser scanning (ALS) has been placed in a very advantageous position in forest studies, for its unique ability to directly measure the distribution of vegetation materials in the vertical direction, as well as the terrain beneath the forest canopy. Serving as basis for tree-wise forest biophysical parameter and species information retrieval, single tree detection is a very motivating research topic in forest inventory. The objective of the study is to develop a method from the perspective of computer vision to detect single trees automatically from ALS data. For this purpose, this study explored different aspects of the problem. It starts from an improved pipeline for canopy height model (CHM) generation, which alleviates the distortion of tree crown shapes presented on CHMs resulted from conventional procedures due to the shadow effects of ALS data and produces pit-free CHM. The single tree detection method consists of a hybrid framework which integrates low-level image processing techniques, i.e. local maxima filtering (LM) and marker-controlled watershed segmentation (MCWS), into a high-level probabilistic model. In the proposed approach, tree crowns in the forest plot are modelled as a configuration of circular objects. The configuration containing the best possible set of detected tree objects is estimated by a global optimization solver in a probabilistic framework. The model features an accelerated optimization process compared with classical stochastic models, e.g. marked point processes. The parameter estimation is another issue: the study investigated both a reference-based supervised and an Expectation-Maximization (EM) based unsupervised method to estimate the parameters in the model. The model was tested in a temperate mature coniferous forest in Ontario, Canada, as well as simulated coniferous forest plots with various degrees of crown overlap. The experimental results showed the effectiveness of our proposed method, which was capable of reducing the commission errors produced by local maxima filtering based methods, thus increasing the overall detection accuracy by approximately 10% on all of the datasets

    Användning av fjärranalysdata för att förbättra stickprovsbaserade skogsinventeringar

    Over the past decades it has been shown that remotely sensed auxiliary data have a potential to increase the precision of key estimators in sample-based forest surveys. This thesis was motivated by the increasing availability of remotely sensed data, and the objectives were to investigate how this type of auxiliary data can be used for improving both the design and the estimators in sample-based surveys. Two different modes of inference were studied: model-based inference and design-based inference. Empirical data for the studies were acquired from a boreal forest area in the Kuortane region of western Finland. The data comprised a combination of auxiliary information derived from airborne LiDAR and Landsat data, and field sample plot data collected using a modification of the 10th Finnish National Forest Inventory. The studied forest attribute was growing stock volume. In Paper I, remotely sensed data were applied at the design stage, using a newly developed design which spreads the sample efficiently in the space of auxiliary data. The analysis was carried out through Monte Carlo sampling simulation using a simulated population developed by way of a copula technique utilizing empirical data from Kuortane. The results of the study showed that the new design resulted in a higher precision when compared to a traditional design where the samples were spread only in the space of geographical data. In Paper II, remotely sensed auxiliary data were applied in connection with model-assisted estimation. The auxiliary data were used mainly in the estimation stage, but also in the design stage through probability-proportional-to-size sampling utilizing Landsat data. The results showed that LiDAR auxiliary data considerably improved the precision compared to estimation based only on field samples. Additionally, in spite of their low correlation with growing stock volume, adding Landsat data as auxiliary data further improved the precision of the estimators. In Paper III, the focus was set on model-based inference and the influence of the use of different models on the precision of estimators. For this study, a second simulated population was developed utilizing the empirical data, including only non-zero growing stock volume observations. The results revealed that the choice of model form in model-based inference had minor to moderate effects on the precision of the estimators. Furthermore, as expected, it was found that model-based prediction and model-assisted estimation performed almost equally well. In Paper IV, the precision of model-based prediction and model-assisted estimation was compared in a case where field and remotely sensed data were geographically mismatched. The same simulated population as used in Paper III was employed in this study. The results showed that the precision in most cases decreased considerably, and more so when LiDAR auxiliary data were applied, compared to when Landsat auxiliary data were used. As for the choice of inferential framework, it was revealed that model-based inference in this case had some advantages compared to design-based inference through model-assisted estimators. The results of this thesis are important for the development of forest inventories to meet the requirements which stem from an increasing number of international commitments and agreements related to forests. Denna avhandling motiverades av den ökade tillgängligheten av fjärranalysdata, och målet var att undersöka hur den här typen av hjälpdata kan användas för att förbättra både stickprovsdesign och skattningar vid stickprovsbaserade inventeringar. Två olika typer av statistisk inferens studerades: modellbaserad inferens och designbaserad inferens. Empiriska data för studierna förvärvades från ett borealt skogsområde i Kuortane regionen i västra Finland. Data bestod av en kombination av hjälpinformation från luftburen LiDAR, Landsat och fältdata från provytor som samlats in med hjälp av en intensifierad version av Riksskogstaxeringen. Det attribut som studerades var volym för skogsbeståndet. Resultaten från denna avhandling är viktiga för utvecklingen av skogsinventeringar så att de kan uppfylla de krav som följer av ett ökande antal internationella åtaganden och överenskommelser med anknytning till skogen.     Review on Active and Passive Remote Sensing Techniques for Road Extraction

    Digital maps of road networks are a vital part of digital cities and intelligent transportation. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive review on road extraction based on various remote sensing data sources, including high-resolution images, hyperspectral images, synthetic aperture radar images, and light detection and ranging. This review is divided into three parts. Part 1 provides an overview of the existing data acquisition techniques for road extraction, including data acquisition methods, typical sensors, application status, and prospects. Part 2 underlines the main road extraction methods based on four data sources. In this section, road extraction methods based on different data sources are described and analysed in detail. Part 3 presents the combined application of multisource data for road extraction. Evidently, different data acquisition techniques have unique advantages, and the combination of multiple sources can improve the accuracy of road extraction. The main aim of this review is to provide a comprehensive reference for research on existing road extraction technologies.Peer reviewe

    Ground Estimation and Point Cloud Segmentation using SpatioTemporal Conditional Random Field

    International audienceWhether it be to feed data for an object detection-and-tracking system or to generate proper occupancy grids, 3D point cloud extraction of the ground and data classification are critical processing tasks, on their efficiency can drastically depend the whole perception chain. Flat-ground assumption or form recognition in point clouds can either lead to systematic error, or massive calculations. This paper describes an adaptive method for ground labeling in 3D Point clouds, based on a local ground elevation estimation. The system proposes to model the ground as a Spatio-Temporal Conditional Random Field (STCRF). Spatial and temporal dependencies within the segmentation process are unified by a dynamic probabilistic framework based on the conditional random field (CRF). Ground elevation parameters are estimated in parallel in each node, using an interconnected Expectation Maximization (EM) algorithm variant. The approach, designed to target high-speed vehicle constraints and performs efficiently with highly-dense (Velodyne-64) and sparser (Ibeo-Lux) 3D point clouds, has been implemented and deployed on experimental vehicle and platforms, and are currently tested on embedded systems (Nvidia Jetson TX1, TK1).     3D Classification of Power Line Scene Using Airborne Lidar Data

    Failure to adequately maintain vegetation within a power line corridor has been identified as a main cause of the August 14, 2003 electric power blackout. Such that, timely and accurate corridor mapping and monitoring are indispensible to mitigate such disaster. Moreover, airborne LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) has been recently introduced and widely utilized in industries and academies thanks to its potential to automate the data processing for scene analysis including power line corridor mapping. However, today’s corridor mapping practice using LiDAR in industries still remains an expensive manual process that is not suitable for the large-scale, rapid commercial compilation of corridor maps. Additionally, in academies only few studies have developed algorithms capable of recognizing corridor objects in the power line scene, which are mostly based on 2-dimensional classification. Thus, the objective of this dissertation is to develop a 3-dimensional classification system which is able to automatically identify key objects in the power line corridor from large-scale LiDAR data. This dissertation introduces new features for power structures, especially for the electric pylon, and existing features which are derived through diverse piecewise (i.e., point, line and plane) feature extraction, and then constructs a classification model pool by building individual models according to the piecewise feature sets and diverse voltage training samples using Random Forests. Finally, this dissertation proposes a Multiple Classifier System (MCS) which provides an optimal committee of models from the model pool for classification of new incoming power line scene. The proposed MCS has been tested on a power line corridor where medium voltage transmission lines (115 kV and 230 kV) pass. The classification results based on the MCS applied by optimally selecting the pre-built classification models according to the voltage type of the test corridor demonstrate a good accuracy (89.07%) and computationally effective time cost (approximately 4 hours/km) without additional training fees

    A comparison of machine learning regression techniques for LiDAR-derived estimation of forest variables

    Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) is a remote sensor able to extract three-dimensional information. Environmental models in forest areas have been benefited by the use of LiDAR-derived information in the last years. A multiple linear regression (MLR) with previous stepwise feature selection is the most common method in the literature to develop those models. MLR defines the relation between the set of field measurements and the statistics extracted from a LiDAR flight. Machine learning has emerged as a suitable tool to improve classic stepwise MLR results on LiDAR. Unfortunately, few studies have been proposed to compare the quality of the multiple machine learning approaches. This paper presents a comparison between the classic MLR-based methodology and regression techniques in machine learning (neural networks, support vector machines, nearest neighbour, ensembles such as random forests) with special emphasis on regression trees. The selected techniques are applied to real LiDAR data from two areas in the province of Lugo (Galizia, Spain).     Improving estimates and change detection of forest above-ground biomass using statistical methods

    Forests store approximately as much carbon as is in the atmosphere, with potential to take in or release carbon rapidly based on growth, climate change and human disturbance. Above-ground biomass (AGB) is the largest carbon pool in most forest systems, and the quickest to change following disturbance. Quantifying AGB on a global scale and being able to reliably map how it is changing, is therefore required for tackling climate change by targeting and monitoring policies. AGB can be mapped using remote sensing and machine learning methods, but such maps have high uncertainties, and simply subtracting one from another does not give a reliable indication of changes. To improve the quantification of AGB changes it is necessary to add advanced statistical methodology to existing machine learning and remote sensing methods. This review discusses the areas in which techniques used in statistical research could positively impact AGB quantification. Nine global or continental AGB maps, and a further eight local AGB maps, were investigated in detail to understand the limitations of techniques currently used. It was found that both modelling and validation of maps lacked spatial consideration. Spatial cross validation or other sampling methods, which specifically account for the spatial nature of this data, are important to introduce into AGB map validation. Modelling techniques which capture the spatial nature should also be used. For example, spatial random effects can be included in various forms of hierarchical statistical models. These can be estimated using frequentist or Bayesian inference. Strategies including hierarchical modelling, Bayesian inference, and simulation methods can also be applied to improve uncertainty estimation. Additionally, if these uncertainties are visualised using pixelation or contour maps this could improve interpretation. Improved uncertainty, which is commonly between 30% and 40%, is in addition needed to produce accurate change maps which will benefit policy decisions, policy implementation, and our understanding of the carbon cycle
