Runtime verification for biochemical programs
The biochemical paradigm is well-suited for modelling autonomous systems and new programming languages are emerging from this approach. However, in order to validate such programs, we need to define precisely their semantics and to provide verification techniques. In this paper, we consider a higher-order biochemical calculus that models the structure of system states and its dynamics thanks to rewriting abstractions, namely rules and strategies. We extend this calculus with a runtime verification technique in order to perform automatic discovery of property satisfaction failure. The property specification language is a subclass of LTL safety and liveness properties
Modeling adaptation with a tuple-based coordination language
In recent years, it has been argued that systems and applications, in order to deal with their increasing complexity, should be able to adapt their behavior according to new requirements or environment conditions. In this paper, we present a preliminary investigation aiming at studying how coordination languages and formal methods can contribute to a better understanding, implementation and usage of the mechanisms and techniques for adaptation currently proposed in the literature. Modeling Adaptation with Klaim
In recent years, it has been argued that systems and applications, in order to deal with their increasing complexity, should be able to adapt their behavior according to new requirements or environment conditions. In this paper, we present an investigation aiming at studying how coordination languages and formal methods can contribute to a better understanding, implementation and use of the mechanisms and techniques for adaptation currently proposed in the literature. Our study relies on the formal coordination language Klaim as a common framework for modeling some well-known adaptation techniques: the IBM MAPE-K loop, the Accord component-based framework for architectural adaptation, and the aspect- and context-oriented programming paradigms. We illustrate our approach through a simple example concerning a data repository equipped with an automated cache mechanism
Dynamic Programming on Nominal Graphs
Many optimization problems can be naturally represented as (hyper) graphs,
where vertices correspond to variables and edges to tasks, whose cost depends
on the values of the adjacent variables. Capitalizing on the structure of the
graph, suitable dynamic programming strategies can select certain orders of
evaluation of the variables which guarantee to reach both an optimal solution
and a minimal size of the tables computed in the optimization process. In this
paper we introduce a simple algebraic specification with parallel composition
and restriction whose terms up to structural axioms are the graphs mentioned
above. In addition, free (unrestricted) vertices are labelled with variables,
and the specification includes operations of name permutation with finite
support. We show a correspondence between the well-known tree decompositions of
graphs and our terms. If an axiom of scope extension is dropped, several
(hierarchical) terms actually correspond to the same graph. A suitable
graphical structure can be found, corresponding to every hierarchical term.
Evaluating such a graphical structure in some target algebra yields a dynamic
programming strategy. If the target algebra satisfies the scope extension
axiom, then the result does not depend on the particular structure, but only on
the original graph. We apply our approach to the parking optimization problem
developed in the ASCENS e-mobility case study, in collaboration with
Volkswagen. Dynamic programming evaluations are particularly interesting for
autonomic systems, where actual behavior often consists of propagating local

Higher-order port-graph rewriting
The biologically inspired framework of port-graphs has been successfully used
to specify complex systems. It is the basis of the PORGY modelling tool. To
facilitate the specification of proof normalisation procedures via graph
rewriting, in this paper we add higher-order features to the original
port-graph syntax, along with a generalised notion of graph morphism. We
provide a matching algorithm which enables to implement higher-order port-graph
rewriting in PORGY, thus one can visually study the dynamics of the systems
modelled. We illustrate the expressive power of higher-order port-graphs with

Entering the blackboard jungle: canonical dysfunction in conscious machines
The central paradigm of Artificial Intelligence is rapidly shifting toward biological models for both robotic devices and systems performing such critical tasks as network management and process control. Here we apply recent mathematical analysis of the necessary conditions for consciousness in humans in an attempt to gain some understanding of the likely canonical failure modes inherent to a broad class of global workspace/blackboard machines designed to emulate biological functions. Similar problems are likely to confront other possible architectures, although their mathematical description may be far less straightforward
A Flexible and Secure Deployment Framework for Distributed Applications
This paper describes an implemented system which is designed to support the
deployment of applications offering distributed services, comprising a number
of distributed components. This is achieved by creating high level placement
and topology descriptions which drive tools that deploy applications consisting
of components running on multiple hosts. The system addresses issues of
heterogeneity by providing abstractions over host-specific attributes yielding
a homogeneous run-time environment into which components may be deployed. The
run-time environments provide secure binding mechanisms that permit deployed
components to bind to stored data and services on the hosts on which they are
