    Building and Infrastructure Defect Detection and Visualization Using Drone and Deep Learning Technologies

    This paper presents an accurate and stable method for object and defect detection and visualization on building and infrastructural facilities. This method uses drones and cameras to collect three- dimensional (3D) point clouds via photogrammetry, and uses orthographic or arbitrary views of the target objects to generate the feature images of points’ spectral, elevation, and normal features. U-Net is implemented in the pixelwise segmentation for object and defect detection using multiple feature images. This method was validated on four applications, including on-site path detection, pavement cracking detection, highway slope detection, and building facade window detection. The comparative experimental results confirmed that U-Net with multiple features has a better pixelwise segmentation performance than separately using each single feature. The developed method can implement object and defect detection with different shapes, including striped objects, thin objects, recurring and regularly shaped objects, and bulky objects, which will improve the accuracy and efficiency of inspection, assessment, and management of buildings and infrastructural facilities

    Anomaly detection and automatic labeling for solar cell quality inspection based on Generative Adversarial Network

    Quality inspection applications in industry are required to move towards a zero-defect manufacturing scenario, withnon-destructive inspection and traceability of 100 % of produced parts. Developing robust fault detection and classification modelsfrom the start-up of the lines is challenging due to the difficulty in getting enough representative samples of the faulty patternsand the need to manually label them. This work presents a methodology to develop a robust inspection system, targeting thesepeculiarities, in the context of solar cell manufacturing. The methodology is divided into two phases: In the first phase, an anomalydetection model based on a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) is employed. This model enables the detection and localizationof anomalous patterns within the solar cells from the beginning, using only non-defective samples for training and without anymanual labeling involved. In a second stage, as defective samples arise, the detected anomalies will be used as automaticallygenerated annotations for the supervised training of a Fully Convolutional Network that is capable of detecting multiple types offaults. The experimental results using 1873 EL images of monocrystalline cells show that (a) the anomaly detection scheme can beused to start detecting features with very little available data, (b) the anomaly detection may serve as automatic labeling in order totrain a supervised model, and (c) segmentation and classification results of supervised models trained with automatic labels arecomparable to the ones obtained from the models trained with manual labels.Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures, 6 tables.     Deep CNN-Based Automated Optical Inspection for Aerospace Components

    ABSTRACT The defect detection problem is of outmost importance in high-tech industries such as aerospace manufacturing and is widely employed using automated industrial quality control systems. In the aerospace manufacturing industry, composite materials are extensively applied as structural components in civilian and military aircraft. To ensure the quality of the product and high reliability, manual inspection and traditional automatic optical inspection have been employed to identify the defects throughout production and maintenance. These inspection techniques have several limitations such as tedious, time- consuming, inconsistent, subjective, labor intensive, expensive, etc. To make the operation effective and efficient, modern automated optical inspection needs to be preferred. In this dissertation work, automatic defect detection techniques are tested on three levels using a novel aerospace composite materials image dataset (ACMID). First, classical machine learning models, namely, Support Vector Machine and Random Forest, are employed for both datasets. Second, deep CNN-based models, such as improved ResNet50 and MobileNetV2 architectures are trained on ACMID datasets. Third, an efficient defect detection technique that combines the features of deep learning and classical machine learning model is proposed for ACMID dataset. To assess the aerospace composite components, all the models are trained and tested on ACMID datasets with distinct sizes. In addition, this work investigates the scenario when defective and non-defective samples are scarce and imbalanced. To overcome the problems of imbalanced and scarce datasets, oversampling techniques and data augmentation using improved deep convolutional generative adversarial networks (DCGAN) are considered. Furthermore, the proposed models are also validated using one of the benchmark steel surface defects (SSD) dataset

    Artificial Intelligence in Civil Infrastructure Health Monitoring—historical Perspectives, Current Trends, and Future Visions

    Over the past 2 decades, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) has exponentially increased toward complete automation of structural inspection and assessment tasks. This trend will continue to rise in image processing as unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and the internet of things (IoT) markets are expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate of 57.5% and 26%, respectively, from 2021 to 2028. This paper aims to catalog the milestone development work, summarize the current research trends, and envision a few future research directions in the innovative application of AI in civil infrastructure health monitoring. A blow-by-blow account of the major technology progression in this research field is provided in a chronological order. Detailed applications, key contributions, and performance measures of each milestone publication are presented. Representative technologies are detailed to demonstrate current research trends. A road map for future research is outlined to address contemporary issues such as explainable and physics-informed AI. This paper will provide readers with a lucid memoir of the historical progress, a good sense of the current trends, and a clear vision for future research

    Benchmarking Image Processing Algorithms for Unmanned Aerial System-Assisted Crack Detection in Concrete Structures

    This paper summarizes the results of traditional image processing algorithms for detection of defects in concrete using images taken by Unmanned Aerial Systems (UASs). Such algorithms are useful for improving the accuracy of crack detection during autonomous inspection of bridges and other structures, and they have yet to be compared and evaluated on a dataset of concrete images taken by UAS. The authors created a generic image processing algorithm for crack detection, which included the major steps of filter design, edge detection, image enhancement, and segmentation, designed to uniformly compare dierent edge detectors. Edge detection was carried out by six filters in the spatial (Roberts, Prewitt, Sobel, and Laplacian of Gaussian) and frequency (Butterworth and Gaussian) domains. These algorithms were applied to fifty images each of defected and sound concrete. Performances of the six filters were compared in terms of accuracy, precision, minimum detectable crack width, computational time, and noise-to-signal ratio. In general, frequency domain techniques were slower than spatial domain methods because of the computational intensity of the Fourier and inverse Fourier transformations used to move between spatial and frequency domains. Frequency domain methods also produced noisier images than spatial domain methods. Crack detection in the spatial domain using the Laplacian of Gaussian filter proved to be the fastest, most accurate, and most precise method, and it resulted in the finest detectable crack width. The Laplacian of Gaussian filter in spatial domain is recommended for future applications of real-time crack detection using UAS
