    PSDefoPAT—Persistent Scatterer Deformation Pattern Analysis Tool

    Persistent Scatterer Deformation Pattern Analysis Tool, for short PSDefoPAT, was designed to assign each measuring point of an advanced DInSAR data set a best-fitting time series model based on its displacement time series. In this paper, we will outline the operating principles of the tool. The periodic and trend components of a time series model are separately determined based on hypothesis tests. The periodic component is fitted as a sine function, and for the trend component, linear, quadratic, and piecewise linear regression models are considered. Additionally, the tool assesses the goodness-of-fit for each model in the form of the adjusted coefficient of determination Radj2R^2_{adj} value. The tool works fully automatically and thus facilitates the analysis of large data sets, which are becoming more available to the public due to services such as the European Ground Motion Service. Additionally, we demonstrate the capabilities of PSDefoPAT using four case studies characterized by different deformation mechanisms, various extents of active deformation area, and varying density of measuring points. In all cases, we successfully reveal information on the temporal behavior of the deformation not apparent in the typically presented mean deformation velocity maps

    A GIS-based procedure for landslide intensity evaluation and specific risk analysis supported by persistent scatterers interferometry (PSI)

    The evaluation of landslide specific risk, defined as the expected degree of loss due to landslides, requires the parameterization and the combination of a number of socio-economic and geological factors, which often needs the interaction of different skills and expertise (geologists, engineers, planners, administrators, etc.). The specific risk sub-components, i.e., hazard and vulnerability of elements at risk, can be determined with different levels of detail depending on the available auxiliary data and knowledge of the territory. These risk factors are subject to short-term variations and nowadays turn out to be easily mappable and evaluable through remotely sensed data and GIS (Geographic Information System) tools. In this work, we propose a qualitative approach at municipal scale for producing a “specific risk” map, supported by recent satellite PSI (Persistent Scatterer Interferometry) data derived from SENTINEL-1 C-band images in the spanning time 2014–2017, implemented in a GIS environment. In particular, PSI measurements are useful for the updating of a landslide inventory map of the area of interest and are exploited for the zonation map of the intensity of ground movements, needed for evaluating the vulnerability over the study area. Our procedure is presented throughout the application to the Volterra basin and the output map could be useful to support the local authorities with updated basic information required for environmental knowledge and planning at municipal level. Moreover, the proposed procedure is easily managed and repeatable in other case studies, as well as exploiting different SAR sensors in L- or X-band

    Monitoring land subsidence of airport using InSAR time-series techniques with atmospheric and orbital error corrections

    Land subsidence is one of the common geological hazards worldwide and mostly caused by human activities including the construction of massive infrastructures. Large infrastructure such as airport is susceptible to land subsidence due to several factors. Therefore, monitoring of the land subsidence at airport is crucial in order to prevent undesirable loss of property and life. Remote sensing technique, especially Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) has been successfully applied to measure the surface deformation over the past few decades although atmospheric artefact and orbital errors are still a concerning issue in this measurement technique. Multi-temporal InSAR, an extension of InSAR technique, uses large sets of SAR scenes to investigate the temporal evolution of surface deformation and mitigate errors found in a single interferogram. This study investigates the long-term land subsidence of the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), Malaysia and Singapore Changi Airport (SCA), Singapore by using two multi-temporal InSAR techniques like Small Baseline Subset (SBAS) and Multiscale InSAR Time Series (MInTS). General InSAR processing was conducted to generate interferogram using ALOS PALSAR data from 2007 until 2011. Atmospheric and orbital corrections were carried out for all interferograms using weather model, namely European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (ECMWF) and Network De-Ramping technique respectively before estimating the time series land subsidence. The results show variation of subsidence with respect to corrections (atmospheric and orbital) as well as difference between multi-temporal InSAR techniques (SBAS and MInTS) used. After applying both corrections, a subsidence ranging from 2 to 17 mm/yr was found at all the selected areas at the KLIA. Meanwhile, for SCA, a subsidence of about less than 10 mm/yr was found. Furthermore, a comparison between two techniques (SBAS and MInTS) show a difference rate of subsidence of about less than 1 mm/yr for both study area. SBAS technique shows more linear result as compared to the MInTS technique which shows slightly scattering pattern but both techniques show a similar trend of surface deformation in both study sites. No drastic deformation was observed in these two study sites and slight deformation was detected which about less than 20mm/yr for both study areas probably occurred due to several reasons including conversion of the land use from agricultural land, land reclamation process and also poor construction. This study proved that InSAR time series surface deformation measurement techniques are useful as well as capable to monitor deformation of large infrastructure such as airport and as an alternative to costly conventional ground measurement for infrastructure monitoring

    Surface motion prediction and mapping for road infrastructures management by PS-InSAR measurements and machine learning algorithms

    This paper introduces a methodology for predicting and mapping surface motion beneath road pavement structures caused by environmental factors. Persistent Scatterer Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (PS-InSAR) measurements, geospatial analyses, and Machine Learning Algorithms (MLAs) are employed for achieving the purpose. Two single learners, i.e., Regression Tree (RT) and Support Vector Machine (SVM), and two ensemble learners, i.e., Boosted Regression Trees (BRT) and Random Forest (RF) are utilized for estimating the surface motion ratio in terms of mm/year over the Province of Pistoia (Tuscany Region, central Italy, 964 km2), in which strong subsidence phenomena have occurred. The interferometric process of 210 Sentinel-1 images from 2014 to 2019 allows exploiting the average displacements of 52,257 Persistent Scatterers as output targets to predict. A set of 29 environmental-related factors are preprocessed by SAGA-GIS, version 2.3.2, and ESRI ArcGIS, version 10.5, and employed as input features. Once the dataset has been prepared, three wrapper feature selection approaches (backward, forward, and bi-directional) are used for recognizing the set of most relevant features to be used in the modeling. A random splitting of the dataset in 70% and 30% is implemented to identify the training and test set. Through a Bayesian Optimization Algorithm (BOA) and a 10-Fold Cross-Validation (CV), the algorithms are trained and validated. Therefore, the Predictive Performance of MLAs is evaluated and compared by plotting the Taylor Diagram. Outcomes show that SVM and BRT are the most suitable algorithms; in the test phase, BRT has the highest Correlation Coefficient (0.96) and the lowest Root Mean Square Error (0.44 mm/year), while the SVM has the lowest difference between the standard deviation of its predictions (2.05 mm/year) and that of the reference samples (2.09 mm/year). Finally, algorithms are used for mapping surface motion over the study area. We propose three case studies on critical stretches of two-lane rural roads for evaluating the reliability of the procedure. Road authorities could consider the proposed methodology for their monitoring, management, and planning activities

    Automatic Detection of Building Displacements Through Unsupervised Learning From InSAR Data

    We introduce an unsupervised learning method that aims to identify building anomalies using Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) time-series data. Specifically, we leverage data obtained from the European Ground Motion Service to develop our proposed approach, which employs a long short-term memory autoencoder model and a reconstruction loss function based on a soft variant of the dynamic time warping, namely “soft-DTW”. We deliberately utilize this loss function for its ability to compare time-series that are not aligned in time, unlike the other conventional reconstruction losses that do not account for time shifts. Moreover, we enhance the performance of anomaly detection by smoothing inputs with a Hann window and defining the learning objective to reconstruct the time order of randomly permuted input series. Our experimental findings, based on persistent scatterer data from Rome, Italy, reveal that our method outperforms several unsupervised machine learning and deep learning methods in detecting various types of building displacement, such as trend, noise, and step anomalies. Additionally, quantitative and qualitative evaluations validate the efficacy of our approach in identifying potentially anomalous buildings. Thus, our method offers a promising solution for detecting anomalies in PS-InSAR time-series, which could have substantial implications in the fields of urban monitoring and infrastructure management

    Characterizing slope instability kinematics by integrating multi-sensor satellite remote sensing observations

    Over the past few decades, the occurrence and intensity of geological hazards, such as landslides, have substantially risen due to various factors, including global climate change, seismic events, rapid urbanization and other anthropogenic activities. Landslide disasters pose a significant risk in both urban and rural areas, resulting in fatalities, infrastructure damages, and economic losses. Nevertheless, conventional ground-based monitoring techniques are often costly, time-consuming, and require considerable resources. Moreover, some landslide incidents occur in remote or hazardous locations, making ground-based observation and field investigation challenging or even impossible. Fortunately, the advancements in spaceborne remote sensing technology have led to the availability of large-scale and high-quality imagery, which can be utilized for various landslide-related applications, including identification, monitoring, analysis, and prediction. This efficient and cost-effective technology allows for remote monitoring and assessment of landslide risks and can significantly contribute to disaster management and mitigation efforts. Consequently, spaceborne remote sensing techniques have become vital for geohazard management in many countries, benefiting society by providing reliable downstream services. However, substantial effort is required to ensure that such benefits are provided. For establishing long-term data archives and reliable analyses, it is essential to maintain consistent and continued use of multi-sensor spaceborne remote sensing techniques. This will enable a more thorough understanding of the physical mechanisms responsible for slope instabilities, leading to better decision-making and development of effective mitigation strategies. Ultimately, this can reduce the impact of landslide hazards on the general public. The present dissertation contributes to this effort from the following perspectives: 1. To obtain a comprehensive understanding of spaceborne remote sensing techniques for landslide monitoring, we integrated multi-sensor methods to monitor the entire life cycle of landslide dynamics. We aimed to comprehend the landslide evolution under complex cascading events by utilizing various spaceborne remote sensing techniques, e.g., the precursory deformation before catastrophic failure, co-failure procedures, and post-failure evolution of slope instability. 2. To address the discrepancies between spaceborne optical and radar imagery, we present a methodology that models four-dimensional (4D) post-failure landslide kinematics using a decaying mathematical model. This approach enables us to represent the stress relaxation for the landslide body dynamics after failure. By employing this methodology, we can overcome the weaknesses of the individual sensor in spaceborne optical and radar imaging. 3. We assessed the effectiveness of a newly designed small dihedral corner reflector for landslide monitoring. The reflector is compatible with both ascending and descending satellite orbits, while it is also suitable for applications with both high-resolution and medium-resolution satellite imagery. Furthermore, although its echoes are not as strong as those of conventional reflectors, the cost of the newly designed reflectors is reduced, with more manageable installation and maintenance. To overcome this limitation, we propose a specific selection strategy based on a probability model to identify the reflectors in satellite images
