    A combinatorial approach to multi-skill workforce scheduling

    This paper deals with scheduling complex tasks with an inhomogeneous set of resources. The problem is to assign technicians to tasks with multi-level skill requirements. Here the requirements are merely the presence of a set of technicians that possess the necessary capabilities. An additional complication is that a set of combined technicians stays together for the duration of a work day. This typically applies to scheduling of maintenance and installation operations. We build schedules by repeated application of a exible matching model that selects tasks to be processed and forms groups of technicians assigned to combinations of tasks. The underlying mixed integer programming (MIP) model is capable of revising technician-task allocations and performs very well, especially in the case of rare skills

    Tracebook : a dynamic checklist support system

    It has recently been demonstrated that checklist scan enable significant improvements to patient safety. However, their clinical acceptance is significantly lower than expected. This is due to the lack of good support systems. Specifically, support systems are too static: this holds for paper-based support as well as for electronic systems that digitize paper-based support naively. Both approaches are independent from clinical process and clinical context. In this paper, we propose a process-oriented and context-aware dynamic checklist support system: Tracebook. This system supports the execution of complex clinical processes and rules involving data from Electronic Medical Record systems. Workflow activities and forms are specific to individual patients based on clinical rules and they are dispatched to the right user automatically based on a process model. Besides describing the Tracebook functionality in general, this paper demonstrates the support system specifically on an example application that we are preparing for a controlled clinical evaluation. At last we discuss the difference between Tracebook and other support systems which also rely on a checklist format

    Designing a new mathematical model based on ABC analysis for inventory control problem: A real case study

    In modern business today, organizations that hold large numbers of inventory items, do not find it economical to make policies for the management of individual inventory items. Managers, thus, need to classify these items according to their importance and fit each item to a certain asset class. The method of grouping and inventory control available in traditional ABC has several disadvantages. These shortcomings have led to the development of an optimization model in the present study to improve the grouping and inventory control decisions in ABC. Moreover, it simultaneously optimizes the existing business relationships among revenue, investment in inventory and customer satisfaction (through service levels) as well as a company's budget for inventory costs. In this paper, a mathematical model is presented to classify inventory items, taking into account significant profit and cost reduction indices. The model has an objective function to maximize the net profit of items in stock. Limitations such as budget even inventory shortages are taken into account too. The mathematical model is solved by the Benders decomposition and the Lagrange relaxation algorithms. Then, the results of the two solutions are compared. The TOPSIS technique and statistical tests are used to evaluate and compare the proposed solutions with one another and to choose the best one. Subsequently, several sensitivity analyses are performed on the model, which helps inventory control managers determine the effect of inventory management costs on optimal decision making and item grouping. Finally, according to the results of evaluating the efficiency of the proposed model and the solution method, a real-world case study is conducted on the ceramic tile industry. Based on the proposed approach, several managerial perspectives are gained on optimal inventory grouping and item control strategies
