A new test framework for communications-critical large scale systems
None of today’s large scale systems could function without the reliable availability of a varied range of network communications capabilities. Whilst software, hardware and communications technologies have been advancing throughout the past two decades, the methods commonly used by industry for testing large scale systems which incorporate critical communications interfaces have not kept pace. This paper argues for the need for a specifically tailored framework to achieve effective and precise testing of communications-critical large scale systems (CCLSSs). The paper briefly discusses how generic test approaches are leading to inefficient and costly test activities in industry. The paper then outlines the features of an alternative CCLSS domain-specific test framework, and then provides an example based on a real case study. The paper concludes with an evaluation of the benefits observed during the case study and an outline of the available evidence that such benefits can be realized with other comparable systems
Is question answering fit for the Semantic Web? A survey
With the recent rapid growth of the Semantic Web (SW), the processes of searching and querying content that is both massive in scale and heterogeneous have become increasingly challenging. User-friendly interfaces, which can support end users in querying and exploring this novel and diverse, structured information space, are needed to make the vision of the SW a reality. We present a survey on ontology-based Question Answering (QA), which has emerged in recent years to exploit the opportunities offered by structured semantic information on the Web. First, we provide a comprehensive perspective by analyzing the general background and history of the QA research field, from influential works from the artificial intelligence and database communities developed in the 70s and later decades, through open domain QA stimulated by the QA track in TREC since 1999, to the latest commercial semantic QA solutions, before tacking the current state of the art in open userfriendly interfaces for the SW. Second, we examine the potential of this technology to go beyond the current state of the art to support end-users in reusing and querying the SW content. We conclude our review with an outlook for this novel research area, focusing in particular on the R&D directions that need to be pursued to realize the goal of efficient and competent retrieval and integration of answers from large scale, heterogeneous, and continuously evolving semantic sources
A Survey on Conversational Search and Applications in Biomedicine
This paper aims to provide a radical rundown on Conversation Search
(ConvSearch), an approach to enhance the information retrieval method where
users engage in a dialogue for the information-seeking tasks. In this survey,
we predominantly focused on the human interactive characteristics of the
ConvSearch systems, highlighting the operations of the action modules, likely
the Retrieval system, Question-Answering, and Recommender system. We labeled
various ConvSearch research problems in knowledge bases, natural language
processing, and dialogue management systems along with the action modules. We
further categorized the framework to ConvSearch and the application is directed
toward biomedical and healthcare fields for the utilization of clinical social
technology. Finally, we conclude by talking through the challenges and issues
of ConvSearch, particularly in Bio-Medicine. Our main aim is to provide an
integrated and unified vision of the ConvSearch components from different
fields, which benefit the information-seeking process in healthcare systems
An electronic pressure profile display system for aeronautic test facilities
The NASA Lewis Research Center has installed an Electronic Pressure Profile Display system. This system provides for the real-time display of pressure readings on high resolution graphics monitors. The Electronic Pressure Profile Display system will replace manometer banks currently used in aeronautic test facilities. The Electronic Pressure Profile Display system consists of an industrial type Digital Pressure Transmitter (DPT) unit which interfaces with a host computer. The host computer collects the pressure data from the DPT unit, converts it into engineering units, and displays the readings on a high resolution graphics monitor in bar graph format. Software was developed to accomplish the above tasks and also draw facility diagrams as background information on the displays. Data transfer between host computer and DPT unit is done with serial communications. Up to 64 channels are displayed with one second update time. This paper describes the system configuration, its features, and its advantages over existing systems

Research resources: curating the new eagle-i discovery system
Development of biocuration processes and guidelines for new data types or projects is a challenging task. Each project finds its way toward defining annotation standards and ensuring data consistency with varying degrees of planning and different tools to support and/or report on consistency. Further, this process may be data type specific even within the context of a single project. This article describes our experiences with eagle-i, a 2-year pilot project to develop a federated network of data repositories in which unpublished, unshared or otherwise ‘invisible’ scientific resources could be inventoried and made accessible to the scientific community. During the course of eagle-i development, the main challenges we experienced related to the difficulty of collecting and curating data while the system and the data model were simultaneously built, and a deficiency and diversity of data management strategies in the laboratories from which the source data was obtained. We discuss our approach to biocuration and the importance of improving information management strategies to the research process, specifically with regard to the inventorying and usage of research resources. Finally, we highlight the commonalities and differences between eagle-i and similar efforts with the hope that our lessons learned will assist other biocuration endeavors
Ethical and Social Aspects of Self-Driving Cars
As an envisaged future of transportation, self-driving cars are being
discussed from various perspectives, including social, economical, engineering,
computer science, design, and ethics. On the one hand, self-driving cars
present new engineering problems that are being gradually successfully solved.
On the other hand, social and ethical problems are typically being presented in
the form of an idealized unsolvable decision-making problem, the so-called
trolley problem, which is grossly misleading. We argue that an applied
engineering ethical approach for the development of new technology is what is
needed; the approach should be applied, meaning that it should focus on the
analysis of complex real-world engineering problems. Software plays a crucial
role for the control of self-driving cars; therefore, software engineering
solutions should seriously handle ethical and social considerations. In this
paper we take a closer look at the regulative instruments, standards, design,
and implementations of components, systems, and services and we present
practical social and ethical challenges that have to be met, as well as novel

Easing the questioning of semantic biomedical data
Researchers have been using semantic technologies
as essential tools to structure knowledge. This is particularly
relevant in the biomedical domain, where large dataset are
continuously generated. Semantic technologies offer the ability
to describe data and to map and linking distributed repositories,
creating a network where the searching interface is a single entry
point. However, the increasing number of semantic data repositories
that are publicly available is creating new challenges related
to its exploration. Despite being human and machine-readable,
these technologies are much more challenging for end-users.
Querying services usually require mastering formal languages
and that knowledge is beyond the typical user’s expertise, being
a critical issue in adopting semantic web information systems. In
particular, the questioning of biomedical data presents specific
challenges for which there are still no mature proposals for
production environments. This paper presents a solution to
query biomedical semantic databases using natural language. The
system is at the intersection between semantic parsing and the
use of templates. It makes it possible to extract information in a
