    Derivation of diagnostic models based on formalized process knowledge

    © IFAC.Industrial systems are vulnerable to faults. Early and accurate detection and diagnosis in production systems can minimize down-time, increase the safety of the plant operation, and reduce manufacturing costs. Knowledge- and model-based approaches to automated fault detection and diagnosis have been demonstrated to be suitable for fault cause analysis within a broad range of industrial processes and research case studies. However, the implementation of these methods demands a complex and error-prone development phase, especially due to the extensive efforts required during the derivation of models and their respective validation. In an effort to reduce such modeling complexity, this paper presents a structured causal modeling approach to supporting the derivation of diagnostic models based on formalized process knowledge. The method described herein exploits the Formalized Process Description Guideline VDI/VDE 3682 to establish causal relations among key-process variables, develops an extension of the Signed Digraph model combined with the use of fuzzy set theory to allow more accurate causality descriptions, and proposes a representation of the resulting diagnostic model in CAEX/AutomationML targeting dynamic data access, portability, and seamless information exchange

    Fuzzy logic control system to provide autonomous collision avoidance for Mars rover vehicle

    NASA is currently involved with planning unmanned missions to Mars to investigate the terrain and process soil samples in advance of a manned mission. A key issue involved in unmanned surface exploration on Mars is that of supporting autonomous maneuvering since radio communication involves lengthy delays. It is anticipated that specific target locations will be designated for sample gathering. In maneuvering autonomously from a starting position to a target position, the rover will need to avoid a variety of obstacles such as boulders or troughs that may block the shortest path to the target. The physical integrity of the rover needs to be maintained while minimizing the time and distance required to attain the target position. Fuzzy logic lends itself well to building reliable control systems that function in the presence of uncertainty or ambiguity. The following major issues are discussed: (1) the nature of fuzzy logic control systems and software tools to implement them; (2) collision avoidance in the presence of fuzzy parameters; and (3) techniques for adaptation in fuzzy logic control systems

    Mining for User-Defined Categorizations as an Approach for Process Simplification in Business Process Discovery

    Business process discovery approaches analyse event logs to create process models describing the as-is state of the underlying processes. Because this type of process mining is especially relevant for low structured processes, there are approaches designed to deal with such processes by simplifying the resulting model. Such simplifications are primarily applied with metrics based on the frequency of observed behaviour. However, a high frequency of certain behaviour is not synonymous with a high relevance to the user. Consequently, this paper applies a design science research approach to design and implement a business process discovery approach based on user-defined categories to guarantee relevance to the respective user. During one design science research cycle, a design theory consisting of design requirements and design principles is constructed, a method called categorization approach is created, and this method implemented in a software artefact is evaluated with regard to perceived usefulness in an expert survey

    Artificial Neural Network Pruning to Extract Knowledge

    Artificial Neural Networks (NN) are widely used for solving complex problems from medical diagnostics to face recognition. Despite notable successes, the main disadvantages of NN are also well known: the risk of overfitting, lack of explainability (inability to extract algorithms from trained NN), and high consumption of computing resources. Determining the appropriate specific NN structure for each problem can help overcome these difficulties: Too poor NN cannot be successfully trained, but too rich NN gives unexplainable results and may have a high chance of overfitting. Reducing precision of NN parameters simplifies the implementation of these NN, saves computing resources, and makes the NN skills more transparent. This paper lists the basic NN simplification problems and controlled pruning procedures to solve these problems. All the described pruning procedures can be implemented in one framework. The developed procedures, in particular, find the optimal structure of NN for each task, measure the influence of each input signal and NN parameter, and provide a detailed verbal description of the algorithms and skills of NN. The described methods are illustrated by a simple example: the generation of explicit algorithms for predicting the results of the US presidential election.Comment: IJCNN 202

    This report gives an overview of the literature on decision tables over the past 15 years. As much as possible, for each reference, an author supplied abstract, a number of keywords and a classification are provided. In some cases own comments are added. The purpose of these comments is to show where, how and why decision tables are used. The literature is classified according to application area, theoretical versus practical character, year of publication, country or origin (not necessarily country of publication) and the language of the document. After a description of the scope of the interview, classification results and the classification by topic are presented. The main body of the paper is the ordered list of publications with abstract, classification and comments.
