    MASCOT: a mechanism for attention-based scale-invariant object recognition in images

    The efficient management of large multimedia databases requires the development of new techniques to process, characterize, and search for multimedia objects. Especially in the case of image data, the rapidly growing amount of documents prohibits a manual description of the images’ content. Instead, the automated characterization is highly desirable to support annotation and retrieval of digital images. However, this is a very complex and still unsolved task. To contribute to a solution of this problem, we have developed a mechanism for recognizing objects in images based on the query by example paradigm. Therefore, the most salient image features of an example image representing the searched object are extracted to obtain a scale-invariant object model. The use of this model provides an efficient and robust strategy for recognizing objects in images independently of their size. Further applications of the mechanism are classical recognition tasks such as scene decomposition or object tracking in video sequences

    Dynamic Steerable Blocks in Deep Residual Networks

    Filters in convolutional networks are typically parameterized in a pixel basis, that does not take prior knowledge about the visual world into account. We investigate the generalized notion of frames designed with image properties in mind, as alternatives to this parametrization. We show that frame-based ResNets and Densenets can improve performance on Cifar-10+ consistently, while having additional pleasant properties like steerability. By exploiting these transformation properties explicitly, we arrive at dynamic steerable blocks. They are an extension of residual blocks, that are able to seamlessly transform filters under pre-defined transformations, conditioned on the input at training and inference time. Dynamic steerable blocks learn the degree of invariance from data and locally adapt filters, allowing them to apply a different geometrical variant of the same filter to each location of the feature map. When evaluated on the Berkeley Segmentation contour detection dataset, our approach outperforms all competing approaches that do not utilize pre-training. Our results highlight the benefits of image-based regularization to deep networks

    Barcode Annotations for Medical Image Retrieval: A Preliminary Investigation

    This paper proposes to generate and to use barcodes to annotate medical images and/or their regions of interest such as organs, tumors and tissue types. A multitude of efficient feature-based image retrieval methods already exist that can assign a query image to a certain image class. Visual annotations may help to increase the retrieval accuracy if combined with existing feature-based classification paradigms. Whereas with annotations we usually mean textual descriptions, in this paper barcode annotations are proposed. In particular, Radon barcodes (RBC) are introduced. As well, local binary patterns (LBP) and local Radon binary patterns (LRBP) are implemented as barcodes.     Proof lies at the heart of mathematics yet we know from research in mathematics education that proof is an elusive concept for many mathematics students. The question that this paper raises is whether the introduction of dynamic geometry software will improve the situation – or whether it make the transition from informal to formal proof in mathematics even harder. Through discussion of research into innovative teaching approaches with computers the paper examines whether such approaches can assist pupils in developing a conceptual framework for proof, and in appropriating proof as a means to illuminate geometrical ideas
