    Replication and fault-tolerance in real-time systems

    PhD ThesisThe increased availability of sophisticated computer hardware and the corresponding decrease in its cost has led to a widespread growth in the use of computer systems for realtime plant and process control applications. Such applications typically place very high demands upon computer control systems and the development of appropriate control software for these application areas can present a number of problems not normally encountered in other applications. First of all, real-time applications must be correct in the time domain as well as the value domain: returning results which are not only correct but also delivered on time. Further, since the potential for catastrophic failures can be high in a process or plant control environment, many real-time applications also have to meet high reliability requirements. These requirements will typically be met by means of a combination of fault avoidance and fault tolerance techniques. This thesis is intended to address some of the problems encountered in the provision of fault tolerance in real-time applications programs. Specifically,it considers the use of replication to ensure the availability of services in real-time systems. In a real-time environment, providing support for replicated services can introduce a number of problems. In particular, the scope for non-deterministic behaviour in real-time applications can be quite large and this can lead to difficultiesin maintainingconsistent internal states across the members of a replica group. To tackle this problem, a model is proposed for fault tolerant real-time objects which not only allows such objects to perform application specific recovery operations and real-time processing activities such as event handling, but which also allows objects to be replicated. The architectural support required for such replicated objects is also discussed and, to conclude, the run-time overheads associated with the use of such replicated services are considered.The Science and Engineering Research Council

    Partial replication in distributed software transactional memory

Usually, DSTM systems resort to data distribution and full replication techniques in order to provide scalability and fault tolerance. Nevertheless, distribution does not provide support for fault tolerance and full replication limits the system’s total storage capacity. In this context, partial data replication rises as an intermediate solution that combines the best of the previous two trying to mitigate their disadvantages. This strategy has been explored by the distributed databases research field, but has been little addressed in the context of transactional memory and, to the best of our knowledge, it has never before been incorporated into a DSTM system for a general-purpose programming language. Thus, we defend the claim that it is possible to combine both full and partial data replication in such systems. Accordingly, we developed a prototype of a DSTM system combining full and partial data replication for Java programs. We built from an existent DSTM framework and extended it with support for partial data replication. With the proposed framework, we implemented a partially replicated DSTM. We evaluated the proposed system using known benchmarks, and the evaluation showcases the existence of scenarios where partial data replication can be advantageous, e.g., in scenarios with small amounts of transactions modifying fully replicated data. The results of this thesis show that we were able to sustain our claim by implementing a prototype that effectively combines full and partial data replication in a DSTM system.     Building global and scalable systems with atomic multicast

    The rise of worldwide Internet-scale services demands large distributed systems. Indeed, when handling several millions of users, it is common to operate thousands of servers spread across the globe. Here, replication plays a central role, as it contributes to improve the user experience by hiding failures and by providing acceptable latency. In this thesis, we claim that atomic multicast, with strong and well-defined properties, is the appropriate abstraction to efficiently design and implement globally scalable distributed systems. Internet-scale services rely on data partitioning and replication to provide scalable performance and high availability. Moreover, to reduce user-perceived response times and tolerate disasters (i.e., the failure of a whole datacenter), services are increasingly becoming geographically distributed. Data partitioning and replication, combined with local and geographical distribution, introduce daunting challenges, including the need to carefully order requests among replicas and partitions. One way to tackle this problem is to use group communication primitives that encapsulate order requirements. While replication is a common technique used to design such reliable distributed systems, to cope with the requirements of modern cloud based ``always-on'' applications, replication protocols must additionally allow for throughput scalability and dynamic reconfiguration, that is, on-demand replacement or provisioning of system resources. We propose a dynamic atomic multicast protocol which fulfills these requirements. It allows to dynamically add and remove resources to an online replicated state machine and to recover crashed processes. Major efforts have been spent in recent years to improve the performance, scalability and reliability of distributed systems. In order to hide the complexity of designing distributed applications, many proposals provide efficient high-level communication abstractions. Since the implementation of a production-ready system based on this abstraction is still a major task, we further propose to expose our protocol to developers in the form of distributed data structures. B-trees for example, are commonly used in different kinds of applications, including database indexes or file systems. Providing a distributed, fault-tolerant and scalable data structure would help developers to integrate their applications in a distribution transparent manner. This work describes how to build reliable and scalable distributed systems based on atomic multicast and demonstrates their capabilities by an implementation of a distributed ordered map that supports dynamic re-partitioning and fast recovery. To substantiate our claim, we ported an existing SQL database atop of our distributed lock-free data structure.     Object replication in a distributed system

    PhD ThesisA number of techniques have been proposed for the construction of fault—tolerant applications. One of these techniques is to replicate vital system resources so that if one copy fails sufficient copies may still remain operational to allow the application to continue to function. Interactions with replicated resources are inherently more complex than non—replicated interactions, and hence some form of replication transparency is necessary. This may be achieved by employing replica consistency protocols to mask replica failures and maintain consistency of state between functioning replicas. To achieve consistency between replicas it is necessary to ensure that all replicas receive the same set of messages in the same order, despite failures at the senders and receivers. This can be accomplished by making use of order preserving reliable communication protocols. However, we shall show how it can be more efficient to use unordered reliable communication and to impose ordering at the application level, by making use of syntactic knowledge of the application. This thesis develops techniques for replicating objects: in general this is harder than replicating data, as objects (which can contain data) can contain calls on other objects. Handling replicated objects is essentially the same as handling replicated computations, and presents more problems than simply replicating data. We shall use the concept of the object to provide transparent replication to users: a user will interact with only a single object interface which hides the fact that the object is actually replicated. The main aspects of the replication scheme presented in this thesis have been fully implemented and tested. This includes the design and implementation of a replicated object invocation protocol and the algorithms which ensure that (replicated) atomic actions can manipulate replicated objects.Research Studentship, Science and Engineering Research Council.     GRIDKIT: Pluggable overlay networks for Grid computing

    A `second generation' approach to the provision of Grid middleware is now emerging which is built on service-oriented architecture and web services standards and technologies. However, advanced Grid applications have significant demands that are not addressed by present-day web services platforms. As one prime example, current platforms do not support the rich diversity of communication `interaction types' that are demanded by advanced applications (e.g. publish-subscribe, media streaming, peer-to-peer interaction). In the paper we describe the Gridkit middleware which augments the basic service-oriented architecture to address this particular deficiency. We particularly focus on the communications infrastructure support required to support multiple interaction types in a unified, principled and extensible manner-which we present in terms of the novel concept of pluggable overlay networks

    Distributed replicated macro-components

However, exploring the power of multi-core processors remains complex for most programmers. A Macro-component is an abstraction that tries to tackle this problem by allowing to explore the power of multi-core machines without requiring changes in the programs. A Macro-component encapsulates several diverse implementations of the same specification. This allows to take the best performance of all operations and/or distribute load among replicas, while keeping contention and synchronization overhead to the minimum. In real-world applications, relying on only one server to provide a service leads to limited fault-tolerance and scalability. To address this problem, it is common to replicate services in multiple machines. This work addresses the problem os supporting such replication solution, while exploring the power of multi-core machines. To this end, we propose to support the replication of Macro-components in a cluster of machines. In this dissertation we present the design of a middleware solution for achieving such goal. Using the implemented replication middleware we have successfully deployed a replicated Macro-component of in-memory databases which are known to have scalability problems in multi-core machines. The proposed solution combines multi-master replication across nodes with primary-secondary replication within a node, where several instances of the database are running on a single machine. This approach deals with the lack of scalability of databases on multi-core systems while minimizing communication costs that ultimately results in an overall improvement of the services. Results show that the proposed solution is able to scale as the number of nodes and clients increases.
