Multi-objective evolutionary–fuzzy augmented flight control for an F16 aircraft
In this article, the multi-objective design of a fuzzy logic augmented flight controller for a high performance fighter jet (the Lockheed-Martin F16) is described. A fuzzy logic controller is designed and its membership functions tuned by genetic algorithms in order to design a roll, pitch, and yaw flight controller with enhanced manoeuverability which still retains safety critical operation when combined with a standard inner-loop stabilizing controller. The controller is assessed in terms of pilot effort and thus reduction of pilot fatigue. The controller is incorporated into a six degree of freedom motion base real-time flight simulator, and flight tested by a qualified pilot instructor
Finding Optimal Strategies in a Multi-Period Multi-Leader-Follower Stackelberg Game Using an Evolutionary Algorithm
Stackelberg games are a classic example of bilevel optimization problems,
which are often encountered in game theory and economics. These are complex
problems with a hierarchical structure, where one optimization task is nested
within the other. Despite a number of studies on handling bilevel optimization
problems, these problems still remain a challenging territory, and existing
methodologies are able to handle only simple problems with few variables under
assumptions of continuity and differentiability. In this paper, we consider a
special case of a multi-period multi-leader-follower Stackelberg competition
model with non-linear cost and demand functions and discrete production
variables. The model has potential applications, for instance in aircraft
manufacturing industry, which is an oligopoly where a few giant firms enjoy a
tremendous commitment power over the other smaller players. We solve cases with
different number of leaders and followers, and show how the entrance or exit of
a player affects the profits of the other players. In the presence of various
model complexities, we use a computationally intensive nested evolutionary
strategy to find an optimal solution for the model. The strategy is evaluated
on a test-suite of bilevel problems, and it has been shown that the method is
successful in handling difficult bilevel problems.Comment: To be published in Computers and Operations Researc
State-of-the-art in aerodynamic shape optimisation methods
Aerodynamic optimisation has become an indispensable component for any aerodynamic design over the past 60 years, with applications to aircraft, cars, trains, bridges, wind turbines, internal pipe flows, and cavities, among others, and is thus relevant in many facets of technology. With advancements in computational power, automated design optimisation procedures have become more competent, however, there is an ambiguity and bias throughout the literature with regards to relative performance of optimisation architectures and employed algorithms. This paper provides a well-balanced critical review of the dominant optimisation approaches that have been integrated with aerodynamic theory for the purpose of shape optimisation. A total of 229 papers, published in more than 120 journals and conference proceedings, have been classified into 6 different optimisation algorithm approaches. The material cited includes some of the most well-established authors and publications in the field of aerodynamic optimisation. This paper aims to eliminate bias toward certain algorithms by analysing the limitations, drawbacks, and the benefits of the most utilised optimisation approaches. This review provides comprehensive but straightforward insight for non-specialists and reference detailing the current state for specialist practitioners
Decomposition-Based Multiobjective Optimization for Constrained Evolutionary Optimization
Pareto dominance-based multiobjective optimization has been successfully applied to constrained evolutionary optimization during the last two decades. However, as another famous multiobjective optimization framework, decomposition-based multiobjective optimization has not received sufficient attention from constrained evolutionary optimization. In this paper, we make use of decomposition-based multiobjective optimization to solve constrained optimization problems (COPs). In our method, first of all, a COP is transformed into a biobjective optimization problem (BOP). Afterward, the transformed BOP is decomposed into a number of scalar optimization subproblems. After generating an offspring for each subproblem by differential evolution, the weighted sum method is utilized for selection. In addition, to make decomposition-based multiobjective optimization suit the characteristics of constrained evolutionary optimization, weight vectors are elaborately adjusted. Moreover, for some extremely complicated COPs, a restart strategy is introduced to help the population jump out of a local optimum in the infeasible region. Extensive experiments on three sets of benchmark test functions, namely, 24 test functions from IEEE CEC2006, 36 test functions from IEEE CEC2010, and 56 test functions from IEEE CEC2017, have demonstrated that the proposed method shows better or at least competitive performance against other state-of-the-art methods
Adaptive Search and Constraint Optimisation in Engineering Design
The dissertation presents the investigation and development of novel adaptive
computational techniques that provide a high level of performance when searching
complex high-dimensional design spaces characterised by heavy non-linear constraint
requirements. The objective is to develop a set of adaptive search engines that will allow
the successful negotiation of such spaces to provide the design engineer with feasible high
performance solutions.
Constraint optimisation currently presents a major problem to the engineering designer and
many attempts to utilise adaptive search techniques whilst overcoming these problems are
in evidence. The most widely used method (which is also the most general) is to
incorporate the constraints in the objective function and then use methods for
unconstrained search. The engineer must develop and adjust an appropriate penalty
function. There is no general solution to this problem neither in classical numerical
optimisation nor in evolutionary computation. Some recent theoretical evidence suggests
that the problem can only be solved by incorporating a priori knowledge into the search
engine.
Therefore, it becomes obvious that there is a need to classify constrained optimisation
problems according to the degree of available or utilised knowledge and to develop search
techniques applicable at each stage. The contribution of this thesis is to provide such a
view of constrained optimisation, starting from problems that handle the constraints on the
representation level, going through problems that have explicitly defined constraints (i.e.,
an easily computed closed form like a solvable equation), and ending with heavily
constrained problems with implicitly defined constraints (incorporated into a single
simulation model). At each stage we develop applicable adaptive search techniques that
optimally exploit the degree of available a priori knowledge thus providing excellent
quality of results and high performance. The proposed techniques are tested using both well
known test beds and real world engineering design problems provided by industry.British Aerospace,

Population extremal optimisation for discrete multi-objective optimisation problems
The power to solve intractable optimisation problems is often found through population based evolutionary methods. These include, but are not limited to, genetic algorithms, particle swarm optimisation, differential evolution and ant colony optimisation. While showing much promise as an effective optimiser, extremal optimisation uses only a single solution in its canonical form – and there are no standard population mechanics. In this paper, two population models for extremal optimisation are proposed and applied to a multi-objective version of the generalised assignment problem. These models use novel intervention/interaction strategies as well as collective memory in order to allow individual population members to work together. Additionally, a general non-dominated local search algorithm is developed and tested. Overall, the results show that improved attainment surfaces can be produced using population based interactions over not using them. The new EO approach is also shown to be highly competitive with an implementation of NSGA-II.No Full Tex
A two-phase methodology for solving COP using a multiobjective strategy is used. In the first phase, the objective function is completely disregarded and the entire search effort is directed towards finding a single feasible solution. In the second phase, the problem is treated as a bi-objective optimization problem, turning the constraint optimization into a two-objective optimization. The two resulting objectives are the original objective function and the constraint violation degree. In the first phase a methodology based on progressive hardening of soft constraints is proposed in order to find feasible solutions. The performance of the proposed methodology was tested on 11 well-known benchmark functions
