    Planning and Control Strategies for Motion and Interaction of the Humanoid Robot COMAN+

    Despite the majority of robotic platforms are still confined in controlled environments such as factories, thanks to the ever-increasing level of autonomy and the progress on human-robot interaction, robots are starting to be employed for different operations, expanding their focus from uniquely industrial to more diversified scenarios. Humanoid research seeks to obtain the versatility and dexterity of robots capable of mimicking human motion in any environment. With the aim of operating side-to-side with humans, they should be able to carry out complex tasks without posing a threat during operations. In this regard, locomotion, physical interaction with the environment and safety are three essential skills to develop for a biped. Concerning the higher behavioural level of a humanoid, this thesis addresses both ad-hoc movements generated for specific physical interaction tasks and cyclic movements for locomotion. While belonging to the same category and sharing some of the theoretical obstacles, these actions require different approaches: a general high-level task is composed of specific movements that depend on the environment and the nature of the task itself, while regular locomotion involves the generation of periodic trajectories of the limbs. Separate planning and control architectures targeting these aspects of biped motion are designed and developed both from a theoretical and a practical standpoint, demonstrating their efficacy on the new humanoid robot COMAN+, built at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia. The problem of interaction has been tackled by mimicking the intrinsic elasticity of human muscles, integrating active compliant controllers. However, while state-of-the-art robots may be endowed with compliant architectures, not many can withstand potential system failures that could compromise the safety of a human interacting with the robot. This thesis proposes an implementation of such low-level controller that guarantees a fail-safe behaviour, removing the threat that a humanoid robot could pose if a system failure occurred

    Investigating Sensorimotor Control in Locomotion using Robots and Mathematical Models

    Locomotion is a very diverse phenomenon that results from the interactions of a body and its environment and enables a body to move from one position to another. Underlying control principles rely among others on the generation of intrinsic body movements, adaptation and synchronization of those movements with the environment, and the generation of respective reaction forces that induce locomotion. We use mathematical and physical models, namely robots, to investigate how movement patterns emerge in a specific environment, and to what extent central and peripheral mechanisms contribute to movement generation. We explore insect walking, undulatory swimming and bimodal terrestrial and aquatic locomotion. We present relevant findings that explain the prevalence of tripod gaits for fast climbing based on the outcome of an optimization procedure. We also developed new control paradigms based on local sensory pressure feedback for anguilliform swimming, which include oscillator-free and decoupled control schemes, and a new design methodology to create physical models for locomotion investigation based on a salamander-like robot. The presented work includes additional relevant contributions to robotics, specifically a new fast dynamically stable walking gait for hexapedal robots and a decentralized scheme for highly modular control of lamprey-like undulatory swimming robots

There are two software challenges when deploying collaborative robots: how to specify a cooperative mission and how to program each robot to accomplish its mission. In this paper, we propose a novel software development framework that separates mission specification and robot behavior programming, which is called service-oriented and model-based (SeMo) framework. Also, it can support distributed robot systems, swarm robots, and their hybrid. For mission specification, a novel scripting language is proposed with the expression capability. It involves team composition and service-oriented behavior specification of each team, allowing dynamic mode change of operation and multi-tasking. Robots are grouped into teams, and the behavior of each team is defined with a composite service. The internal behavior of a composite service is defined by a sequence of services that the robots will perform. The notion of plan is applied to express multi-tasking. And the robot may have various operating modes, so mode change is triggered by events generated in a composite service. Moreover, to improve the robustness, scalability, and flexibility of robot collaboration, the high-level mission scripting language is extended with new features such as team hierarchy, group service, one-to-many communication. We assume that any robot fails during the execution of scenarios, and the grouping of robots can be made at run-time dynamically. Therefore, the extended mission specification enables a casual user to specify various types of cooperative missions easily. For robot behavior programming, an extended dataflow model is used for task-level behavior specification that does not depend on the robot hardware platform. To specify the dynamic behavior of the robot, we apply an extended task model that supports a hybrid specification of dataflow and finite state machine models. Furthermore, we propose a novel extension to allow the explicit specification of loop structures. This extension helps the compute-intensive application, which contains a lot of loop structures, to specify explicitly and analyze at compile time. Two types of information sharing, global information sharing and local knowledge sharing, are supported for robot collaboration in the dataflow graph. For global information, we use the library task, which supports shared resource management and server-client interaction. On the other hand, to share information locally with near robots, we add another type of port for multicasting and use the knowledge sharing technique. The actual robot code per robot is automatically generated from the associated task graph, which minimizes the human efforts in low-level robot programming and improves the software design productivity significantly. By abstracting the tasks or algorithms as services and adding the strategy description layer in the design flow, the mission specification is refined into task-graph specification automatically. The viability of the proposed methodology is verified with preliminary experiments with three cooperative mission scenarios with heterogeneous robot platforms and robot simulator.Chapter 1.     A Bio-inspired architecture for adaptive quadruped locomotion over irregular terrain

    Tese de doutoramento Programa Doutoral em Engenharia Electrรณnica e de ComputadoresThis thesis presents a tentative advancement on walking control of small quadruped and humanoid position controlled robots, addressing the problem of walk generation by combining dynamical systems approach to motor control, insights from neuroethology research on vertebrate motor control and computational neuroscience. Legged locomotion is a complex dynamical process, despite the seemingly easy and natural behavior of the constantly present proficiency of legged animals. Research on locomotion and motor control in vertebrate animals from the last decades has brought to the attention of roboticists, the potential of the natureโ€™s solutions to robot applications. Recent knowledge on the organization of complex motor generation and on mechanics and dynamics of locomotion has been successfully exploited to pursue agile robot locomotion. The work presented on this manuscript is part of an effort on the pursuit in devising a general, model free solution, for the generation of robust and adaptable walking behaviors. It strives to devise a practical solution applicable to real robots, such as the Sonyโ€™s quadruped AIBO and Robotisโ€™ DARwIn- OP humanoid. The discussed solutions are inspired on the functional description of the vertebrate neural systems, especially on the concept of Central Pattern Generators (CPGs), their structure and organization, components and sensorimotor interactions. They use a dynamical systems approach for the implementation of the controller, especially on the use of nonlinear oscillators and exploitation of their properties. The main topics of this thesis are divided into three parts. The first part concerns quadruped locomotion, extending a previous CPG solution using nonlinear oscillators, and discussing an organization on three hierarchical levels of abstraction, sharing the purpose and knowledge of other works. It proposes a CPG solution which generates the walking motion for the whole-leg, which is then organized in a network for the production of quadrupedal gaits. The devised solution is able to produce goal-oriented locomotion and navigation as directed through highlevel commands from local planning methods. In this part, active balance on a standing quadruped is also addressed, proposing a method based on dynamical systems approach, exploring the integration of parallel postural mechanisms from several sensory modalities. The solutions are all successfully tested on the quadruped AIBO robot. In the second part, is addressed bipedal walking for humanoid robots. A CPG solution for biped walking based on the concept of motion primitives is proposed, loosely based on the idea of synergistic organization of vertebrate motor control. A set of motion primitives is shown to produce the basis of simple biped walking, and generalizable to goal-oriented walking. Using the proposed CPG, the inclusion of feedback mechanisms is investigated, for modulation and adaptation of walking, through phase transition control according to foot load information. The proposed solution is validated on the humanoid DARwIn-OP, and its application is evaluated within a whole-body control framework. The third part sidesteps a little from the other two topics. It discusses the CPG as having an alternative role to direct motor generation in locomotion, serving instead as a processor of sensory information for a feedback based motor generation. In this work a reflex based walking controller is devised for the compliant quadruped Oncilla robot, to serve as purely feedback based walking generation.     For many years, the human being has been trying, in all ways, to recreate the complex mechanisms that form the human body. Such task is extremely complicated and the results are not totally satisfactory. However, with increasing technological advances based on theoretical and experimental researches, man gets, in a way, to copy or to imitate some systems of the human body. These researches not only intended to create humanoid robots, great part of them constituting autonomous systems, but also, in some way, to offer a higher knowledge of the systems that form the human body, objectifying possible applications in the technology of rehabilitation of human beings, gathering in a whole studies related not only to Robotics, but also to Biomechanics, Biomimmetics, Cybernetics, among other areas.     Motion planning for manipulation and/or navigation tasks with emphasis on humanoid robots

    This thesis handles the motion planning problem for various robotic platforms. This is a fundamental problem, especially referring to humanoid robots for which it is particularly challenging for a number of reasons. The first is the high number of degrees of freedom. The second is that a humanoid robot is not a free-flying system in its configuration space: its motions must be generated appropriately. Finally, the implicit requirement that the robot maintains equilibrium, either static or dynamic, typically constrains the trajectory of the robot center of mass. In particular, we are interested in handling problems in which the robot must execute a task, possibly requiring stepping, in environments cluttered by obstacles. In order to solve this problem, we propose to use offline probabilistic motion planning techniques such as Rapidly Exploring Random Trees (RRTs) that consist in finding a solution by means of a graph built in an appropriately defined configuration space. The novelty of the approach is that it does not separate locomotion from task execution. This feature allows to generate whole-body movements while fulfilling the task. The task can be assigned as a trajectory or a single point in the task space or even combining tasks of different nature (e.g., manipulation and navigation tasks). The proposed method is also able to deform the task, if the assigned one is too difficult to be fulfilled. It automatically detects when the task should be deformed and which kind of deformation to apply. However, there are situations, especially when robots and humans have to share the same workspace, in which the robot has to be equipped with reactive capabilities (as avoiding moving obstacles), allowing to reach a basic level of safety. The final part of the thesis handles the rearrangement planning problem. This problem is interesting in view of manipulation tasks, where the robot has to interact with objects in the environment. Roughly speaking, the goal of this problem is to plan the motion for a robot whose assigned a task (e.g., move a target object in a goal region). Doing this, the robot is allowed to move some movable objects that are in the environment. The problem is difficult because we must plan in continuous, high-dimensional state and action spaces. Additionally, the physical constraints induced by the nonprehensile interaction between the robot and the objects in the scene must be respected. Our insight is to embed physics models in the planning stage, allowing robot manipulation and simultaneous objects interaction. Throughout the thesis, we evaluate the proposed planners through experiments on different robotic platforms

    Heterogeneous Self-Reconfiguring Robotics

    Self-reconfiguring (SR) robots are modular systems that can autonomously change shape, or reconfigure, for increased versatility and adaptability in unknown environments. In this thesis, we investigate planning and control for systems of non-identical modules, known as heterogeneous SR robots. Although previous approaches rely on module homogeneity as a critical property, we show that the planning complexity of fundamental algorithmic problems in the heterogeneous case is equivalent to that of systems with identical modules. Primarily, we study the problem of how to plan shape changes while considering the placement of specific modules within the structure. We characterize this key challenge in terms of the amount of free space available to the robot and develop a series of decentralized reconfiguration planning algorithms that assume progressively more severe free space constraints and support reconfiguration among obstacles. In addition, we compose our basic planning techniques in different ways to address problems in the related task domains of positioning modules according to function, locomotion among obstacles, self-repair, and recognizing the achievement of distributed goal-states. We also describe the design of a novel simulation environment, implementation results using this simulator, and experimental results in hardware using a planar SR system called the Crystal Robot. These results encourage development of heterogeneous systems. Our algorithms enhance the versatility and adaptability of SR robots by enabling them to use functionally specialized components to match capability, in addition to shape, to the task at hand
