    A Common Component-based Software Architecture For Military And Commercial Pc-based Virtual Simulation

    Commercially available military-themed virtual simulations have been developed and sold for entertainment since the beginning of the personal computing era. There exists an intense interest by various branches of the military to leverage the technological advances of the personal computing and video game industries to provide low cost military training. By nature of the content of the commercial military-themed virtual simulations, a large overlap has grown between the interests, resources, standards, and technology of the computer entertainment industry and military training branches. This research attempts to identify these commonalities with the purpose of systematically designing and evaluating a common component-based software architecture that could be used to implement a framework for developing content for both commercial and military virtual simulation software applications

    The First International Conference on Service Oriented Computing (ICSOC) was held in Trento, December 15-18, 2003. The focus of the conference ---Service Oriented Computing (SOC)--- is the new emerging paradigm for distributed computing and e-business processing that has evolved from object-oriented and component computing to enable building agile networks of collaborating business applications distributed within and across organizational boundaries. Of the 181 papers submitted to the ICSOC conference, 10 were selected for the forum session which took place on December the 16th, 2003. The papers were chosen based on their technical quality, originality, relevance to SOC and for their nature of being best suited for a poster presentation or a demonstration. This technical report contains the 10 papers presented during the forum session at the ICSOC conference. In particular, the last two papers in the report ere submitted as industrial papers

    Adaptive Multi-Functional Space Systems for Micro-Climate Control

    This report summarizes the work done during the Adaptive Multifunctional Systems for Microclimate Control Study held at the Caltech Keck Institute for Space Studies (KISS) in 2014-2015. Dr. Marco Quadrelli (JPL), Dr. James Lyke (AFRL), and Prof. Sergio Pellegrino (Caltech) led the Study, which included two workshops: the first in May of 2014, and another in February of 2015. The Final Report of the Study presented here describes the potential relevance of adaptive multifunctional systems for microclimate control to the missions outlined in the 2010 NRC Decadal Survey. The objective of the Study was to adapt the most recent advances in multifunctional reconfigurable and adaptive structures to enable a microenvironment control to support space exploration in extreme environments (EE). The technical goal was to identify the most efficient materials, architectures, structures and means of deployment/reconfiguration, system autonomy and energy management solutions needed to optimally project/generate a micro-environment around space assets. For example, compact packed thin-layer reflective structures unfolding to large areas can reflect solar energy, warming and illuminating assets such as exploration rovers on Mars or human habitats on the Moon. This novel solution is called an energy-projecting multifunctional system (EPMFS), which are composed of Multifunctional Systems (MFS) and Energy-Projecting Systems (EPS)

    Toward Customizable Multi-tenant SaaS Applications

    abstract: Nowadays, Computing is so pervasive that it has become indeed the 5th utility (after water, electricity, gas, telephony) as Leonard Kleinrock once envisioned. Evolved from utility computing, cloud computing has emerged as a computing infrastructure that enables rapid delivery of computing resources as a utility in a dynamically scalable, virtualized manner. However, the current industrial cloud computing implementations promote segregation among different cloud providers, which leads to user lockdown because of prohibitive migration cost. On the other hand, Service-Orented Computing (SOC) including service-oriented architecture (SOA) and Web Services (WS) promote standardization and openness with its enabling standards and communication protocols. This thesis proposes a Service-Oriented Cloud Computing Architecture by combining the best attributes of the two paradigms to promote an open, interoperable environment for cloud computing development. Mutil-tenancy SaaS applicantions built on top of SOCCA have more flexibility and are not locked down by a certain platform. Tenants residing on a multi-tenant application appear to be the sole owner of the application and not aware of the existence of others. A multi-tenant SaaS application accommodates each tenant’s unique requirements by allowing tenant-level customization. A complex SaaS application that supports hundreds, even thousands of tenants could have hundreds of customization points with each of them providing multiple options, and this could result in a huge number of ways to customize the application. This dissertation also proposes innovative customization approaches, which studies similar tenants’ customization choices and each individual users behaviors, then provides guided semi-automated customization process for the future tenants.     Blueprint model and language for engineering cloud applications

    Abstract: The research presented in this thesis is positioned within the domain of engineering CSBAs. Its contribution is twofold: (1) a uniform specification language, called the Blueprint Specification Language (BSL), for specifying cloud services across several cloud vendors and (2) a set of associated techniques, called the Blueprint Manipulation Techniques (BMTs), for publishing, querying, and composing cloud service specifications with aim to support the flexible design and configuration of an CSBA.

    Distributed Simulation in Manufacturing Using High Level Architecture

    Manufacturing is a critical industry for all major economies. Every individual and industry depends on manufactured goods, which makes manufacturing crucial to the national economies. Competition is increasingly hard and globalization is leading to worldwide distribution of production, products and services, affecting all countries and economical regions. At the same time, markets are changing. Customers call for faster product changes and demand products, which are increasingly targeted to individual needs. Mass production is therefore replaced by customised and personalised production of individual products. Distributed simulation has the potential to become widely applicable for geographically-dispersed manufacturing environments, as is the case with desktop manufacturing or rapidly deployable micro-assembly stations. This thesis focuses on creating a generic framework that permits the distribution of manufacturing simulations, which was one of the goals of the MS2Value (Modeling and Simulation of Manufacturing Systems for Value Chains) project. Companies, nowadays, normally have their activities and resources geographically dispersed, which represents a challenge for the reusability and interconnection of their manufacturing simulation models. Different approaches have been taken by different communities like the research and military community, but no solution has been presented yet in the manufacturing field. The thesis work presented here proposes the use of the HLA (High Level Architecture) in combination with a simulation software as a solution to these problems.
