A Generalized Framework for Virtual Substitution
We generalize the framework of virtual substitution for real quantifier
elimination to arbitrary but bounded degrees. We make explicit the
representation of test points in elimination sets using roots of parametric
univariate polynomials described by Thom codes. Our approach follows an early
suggestion by Weispfenning, which has never been carried out explicitly.
Inspired by virtual substitution for linear formulas, we show how to
systematically construct elimination sets containing only test points
representing lower bounds
Generalized solutions of the Dirac equation, W bosons, and beta decay
We study the 7x7 Hagen-Hurley equations describing spin 1 particles. We split
these equations, in the interacting case, into two Dirac equations with
non-standard solutions. It is argued that these solutions describe decay of a
virtual W boson in beta decay.Comment: 6 page
Effects of Disorder in FeSe : An Ab Initio Study
Using the coherent-potential approximation, we have studied the effects of
excess Fe, Se-deficiency, and substitutions of S, Te on Se sub-lattice and Co,
Ni and Cu on Fe sub-lattice in FeSe. Our results show that (i) a small amount
of excess Fe substantially disorders the Fe-derived bands while Se-deficiency
affects mainly the Se-derived bands, (ii) the substitution of S or Te enhances
the possibility of Fermi surface nesting, specially in FeSeTe,
in spite of disordering the Se-derived bands, (iii) the electron doping through
Co, Ni or Cu disorders the system and pushes down the Fe-derived bands, thereby
destroying the possibility of Fermi surface nesting. A comparison of these
results with the rigid-band, virtual-crystal and supercell approximations
reveals the importance of describing disorder with the coherent-potential
approximation.Comment: Redone VCA calculations, and some minor changes. (Accepted for

A nonstationary generalization of the Kerr congruence
Making use of the Kerr theorem for shear-free null congruences and of
Newman's representation for a virtual charge ``moving'' in complex space-time,
we obtain an axisymmetric time-dependent generalization of the Kerr congruence,
with a singular ring uniformly contracting to a point and expanding then to
infinity. Electromagnetic and complex eikonal field distributions are naturally
associated with the obtained congruence, with electric charge being
necesssarily unit (``elementary''). We conjecture that the corresponding
solution to the Einstein-Maxwell equations could describe the process of
continious transition of the naked ringlike singularitiy into a rotating black
hole and vice versa, under a particular current radius of the singular ring.Comment: 6 pages, twocolum
Better Answers to Real Questions
We consider existential problems over the reals. Extended quantifier
elimination generalizes the concept of regular quantifier elimination by
providing in addition answers, which are descriptions of possible assignments
for the quantified variables. Implementations of extended quantifier
elimination via virtual substitution have been successfully applied to various
problems in science and engineering. So far, the answers produced by these
implementations included infinitesimal and infinite numbers, which are hard to
interpret in practice. We introduce here a post-processing procedure to
convert, for fixed parameters, all answers into standard real numbers. The
relevance of our procedure is demonstrated by application of our implementation
to various examples from the literature, where it significantly improves the
quality of the results
DUDE-Seq: Fast, Flexible, and Robust Denoising for Targeted Amplicon Sequencing
We consider the correction of errors from nucleotide sequences produced by
next-generation targeted amplicon sequencing. The next-generation sequencing
(NGS) platforms can provide a great deal of sequencing data thanks to their
high throughput, but the associated error rates often tend to be high.
Denoising in high-throughput sequencing has thus become a crucial process for
boosting the reliability of downstream analyses. Our methodology, named
DUDE-Seq, is derived from a general setting of reconstructing finite-valued
source data corrupted by a discrete memoryless channel and effectively corrects
substitution and homopolymer indel errors, the two major types of sequencing
errors in most high-throughput targeted amplicon sequencing platforms. Our
experimental studies with real and simulated datasets suggest that the proposed
DUDE-Seq not only outperforms existing alternatives in terms of
error-correction capability and time efficiency, but also boosts the
reliability of downstream analyses. Further, the flexibility of DUDE-Seq
enables its robust application to different sequencing platforms and analysis
pipelines by simple updates of the noise model. DUDE-Seq is available at

Pion Generalized Dipole Polarizabilities by Virtual Compton Scattering
We present a calculation of the cross section and the event generator of the
reaction . This reaction is sensitive to the pion
generalized dipole polarizabilities, namely, the longitudinal electric
, the transverse electric , and the magnetic
which, in the real-photon limit, reduce to the ordinary electric
and magnetic polarizabilities and , respectively.
The calculation of the cross section is done in the framework of chiral
perturbation theory at . A pion VCS event generator has been
written which is ready for implementation in GEANT simulation codes or for
independent use.Comment: 33 pages, Revtex, 15 figure
