    When are Stochastic Transition Systems Tameable?

    A decade ago, Abdulla, Ben Henda and Mayr introduced the elegant concept of decisiveness for denumerable Markov chains [1]. Roughly speaking, decisiveness allows one to lift most good properties from finite Markov chains to denumerable ones, and therefore to adapt existing verification algorithms to infinite-state models. Decisive Markov chains however do not encompass stochastic real-time systems, and general stochastic transition systems (STSs for short) are needed. In this article, we provide a framework to perform both the qualitative and the quantitative analysis of STSs. First, we define various notions of decisiveness (inherited from [1]), notions of fairness and of attractors for STSs, and make explicit the relationships between them. Then, we define a notion of abstraction, together with natural concepts of soundness and completeness, and we give general transfer properties, which will be central to several verification algorithms on STSs. We further design a generic construction which will be useful for the analysis of {\omega}-regular properties, when a finite attractor exists, either in the system (if it is denumerable), or in a sound denumerable abstraction of the system. We next provide algorithms for qualitative model-checking, and generic approximation procedures for quantitative model-checking. Finally, we instantiate our framework with stochastic timed automata (STA), generalized semi-Markov processes (GSMPs) and stochastic time Petri nets (STPNs), three models combining dense-time and probabilities. This allows us to derive decidability and approximability results for the verification of these models. Some of these results were known from the literature, but our generic approach permits to view them in a unified framework, and to obtain them with less effort.     An Introduction to Mechanized Reasoning

    Mechanized reasoning uses computers to verify proofs and to help discover new theorems. Computer scientists have applied mechanized reasoning to economic problems but -- to date -- this work has not yet been properly presented in economics journals. We introduce mechanized reasoning to economists in three ways. First, we introduce mechanized reasoning in general, describing both the techniques and their successful applications. Second, we explain how mechanized reasoning has been applied to economic problems, concentrating on the two domains that have attracted the most attention: social choice theory and auction theory. Finally, we present a detailed example of mechanized reasoning in practice by means of a proof of Vickrey's familiar theorem on second-price auctions

    COLAB : a hybrid knowledge representation and compilation laboratory

    Knowledge bases for real-world domains such as mechanical engineering require expressive and efficient representation and processing tools. We pursue a declarative-compilative approach to knowledge engineering. While Horn logic (as implemented in PROLOG) is well-suited for representing relational clauses, other kinds of declarative knowledge call for hybrid extensions: functional dependencies and higher-order knowledge should be modeled directly. Forward (bottom-up) reasoning should be integrated with backward (top-down) reasoning. Constraint propagation should be used wherever possible instead of search-intensive resolution. Taxonomic knowledge should be classified into an intuitive subsumption hierarchy. Our LISP-based tools provide direct translators of these declarative representations into abstract machines such as an extended Warren Abstract Machine (WAM) and specialized inference engines that are interfaced to each other. More importantly, we provide source-to-source transformers between various knowledge types, both for user convenience and machine efficiency. These formalisms with their translators and transformers have been developed as part of COLAB, a compilation laboratory for studying what we call, respectively, "vertical\u27; and "horizontal\u27; compilation of knowledge, as well as for exploring the synergetic collaboration of the knowledge representation formalisms. A case study in the realm of mechanical engineering has been an important driving force behind the development of COLAB. It will be used as the source of examples throughout the paper when discussing the enhanced formalisms, the hybrid representation architecture, and the compilers

    Multi-resource approach to asynchronous SoC : design and tool support

    As silicon cost reduces, the demands for higher performance and lower power consumption are ever increasing. The ability to dynamically control the number of resources employed can help balance and optimise a system in terms of its throughput, power consumption, and resilience to errors. The management of multiple resources requires building more advanced resource allocation logic than traditional 1-of-N arbiters posing the need for the efficient design flow supporting both the design and verification of such systems. Networks-on-Chip provide a good application example of distributed arbitration, in which the processor cores needing to transmit data are the clients; and the point-to-point links are the resources managed by routers. Building fast and smart arbiters can greatly benefit such systems in providing efficient and reliable communication service. In this thesis, a multi-resource arbiter was developed based on the Signal Transition Graph (STG) development flow. The arbiter distributes multiple active interchangeable resources that initiate requests when they are ready to be used. It supports concurrent resource utilization, which benefits creating asynchronous Multiple-Input-Multiple- Output (MIMO) queues. In order to deal with designs of higher complexity, an arbiter-oriented design flow is proposed. The flow is based on digital circuit components that are represented internally as STGs. This allows designing circuits without directly working with STGs but allowing their use for synthesis and formal verification. The interfaces for modelling, simulation, and visual model representation of the flow were implemented based on the existing modelling framework. As a result, the verification phase of the flow has helped to find hazards in existing Priority arbiter implementations. Finally, based on the logic-gate flow, the structure of a low-latency general purpose arbiter was developed.     The impact of a pro-male circumcision (MC) approach towards an HIV/AIDS prevention strategy in Botswana

    Includes abstract.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 94-103).This paper investigates how the emergence of male circumcision (MC) as part of a broader HIV prevention strategy will impact on Botswana's HIV/AIDS epidemic. Although is [sic] been more then two decades since Botswana's first case of HIV was diagnosed, HIV/AIDS is still the country's major development challenge. The government has played a key role in providing comprehensive treatment and care interventions and although prevention has always been the government's most important priority, the success of this has been limited. If Botswana is to succeed in decreasing the magnitude of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in future generations there is a paramount need for more effective prevention interventions. Evidence of the preventative impact of MC presents a major opportunity to address this need. Botswana's government has recognized this opportunity and has begun a scale-up of the MC service in the country's health sector. Qualitative methods and quantitative methods show that the current pro-MC approach towards HIV prevention strategy in Botswana could have a positive impact on the country's HIV/AIDS epidemic. However, the possible unintended effects of the scale-up of MC on behaviour should be considered carefully. Great care should be taken in ensuring that there is clarity amongst circumcised men, as well as the general public, on the 'limited' preventative impact of MC to deter behavioural disinhibition from taking place
