    Data-parallel agent-based microscopic road network simulation using graphics processing units

    Road network microsimulation is computationally expensive, and existing state of the art commercial tools use task parallelism and coarse-grained data-parallelism for multi-core processors to achieve improved levels of performance. An alternative is to use Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) and fine-grained data parallelism. This paper describes a GPU accelerated agent based microsimulation model of a road network transport system. The performance for a procedurally generated grid network is evaluated against that of an equivalent multi-core CPU simulation. In order to utilise GPU architectures effectively the paper describes an approach for graph traversal of neighbouring information which is vital to providing high levels of computational performance. The graph traversal approach has been integrated within a GPU agent based simulation framework as a generalised message traversal technique for graph-based communication. Speed-ups of up to 43 ×  are demonstrated with increased performance scaling behaviour. Simulation of over half a million vehicles and nearly two million detectors at a rate of 25 ×  faster than real-time is obtained on a single GPU

    A Framework for Megascale Agent Based Model Simulations on Graphics Processing Units

    Agent-based modeling is a technique for modeling dynamic systems from the bottom up. Individual elements of the system are represented computationally as agents. The system-level behaviors emerge from the micro-level interactions of the agents. Contemporary state-of-the-art agent-based modeling toolkits are essentially discrete-event simulators designed to execute serially on the Central Processing Unit (CPU). They simulate Agent-Based Models (ABMs) by executing agent actions one at a time. In addition to imposing an un-natural execution order, these toolkits have limited scalability. In this article, we investigate data-parallel computer architectures such as Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) to simulate large scale ABMs. We have developed a series of efficient, data parallel algorithms for handling environment updates, various agent interactions, agent death and replication, and gathering statistics. We present three fundamental innovations that provide unprecedented scalability. The first is a novel stochastic memory allocator which enables parallel agent replication in O(1) average time. The second is a technique for resolving precedence constraints for agent actions in parallel. The third is a method that uses specialized graphics hardware, to gather and process statistical measures. These techniques have been implemented on a modern day GPU resulting in a substantial performance increase. We believe that our system is the first ever completely GPU based agent simulation framework. Although GPUs are the focus of our current implementations, our techniques can easily be adapted to other data-parallel architectures.     Using common graphics hardware for multi-agent traffic simulation with CUDA

    Today's graphics processing units (GPU) have tremendous resources when it comes to raw computing power. The simulation of large groups of agents in transport simulation has a huge demand of computation time. Therefore it seems reasonable to try to harvest this computing power for traffic simulation. Unfortunately simulating a network of traffic is inherently connected with random memory access. This is not a domain that the SIMD (single instruction, multiple data) architecture of GPUs is known to work well with. In this paper the authors will try to achieve a speedup by computing multi-agent traffic simulations on the graphics device using NVIDIAs CUDA framework

    Multi-Agent Systems Meet GPU: Deploying Agent-Based Architectures on Graphics Processors

One way to increase the performance of these algorithms and applications is by using the computing power of Graphics Processing Units (GPU). However, effectively mapping distributed software models to GPU is a non-trivial endeavor. In this paper, we investigate ways of improving execution performance of multi-agent systems (MAS) models by means of relevant task allocation mechanisms, which are suitable for GPU execution. Several task allocation architecture variants for MAS using GPU are identified and their properties analyzed. In particular, we study three cases: Agents and their runtime environment can be (i) completely on the host (CPU); (ii) partly on host and device (GPU); (iii) completely on the device. For each of these architecture variants, we propose task allocation models that take GPU restrictions into account

    Simulating heterogeneous behaviours in complex systems on GPUs

    Agent Based Modelling (ABM) is an approach for modelling dynamic systems and studying complex and emergent behaviour. ABMs have been widely applied in diverse disciplines including biology, economics, and social sciences. The scalability of ABM simulations is typically limited due to the computationally expensive nature of simulating a large number of individuals. As such, large scale ABM simulations are excellent candidates to apply parallel computing approaches such as Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). In this paper, we present an extension to the FLAME GPU 1 [1] framework which addresses the divergence problem, i.e. the challenge of executing the behaviour of non-homogeneous individuals on vectorised GPU processors. We do this by describing a modelling methodology which exposes inherent parallelism within the model which is exploited by novel additions to the software permitting higher levels of concurrent simulation execution. Moreover, we demonstrate how this extension can be applied to realistic cellular level tissue model by benchmarking the model to demonstrate a measured speedup of over 4x

    An Agent-Based Simulation API for Speculative PDES Runtime Environments

    Agent-Based Modeling and Simulation (ABMS) is an effective paradigm to model systems exhibiting complex interactions, also with the goal of studying the emergent behavior of these systems. While ABMS has been effectively used in many disciplines, many successful models are still run only sequentially. Relying on simple and easy-to-use languages such as NetLogo limits the possibility to benefit from more effective runtime paradigms, such as speculative Parallel Discrete Event Simulation (PDES). In this paper, we discuss a semantically-rich API allowing to implement Agent-Based Models in a simple and effective way. We also describe the critical points which should be taken into account to implement this API in a speculative PDES environment, to scale up simulations on distributed massively-parallel clusters. We present an experimental assessment showing how our proposal allows to implement complicated interactions with a reduced complexity, while delivering a non-negligible performance increase

    A Review of Platforms for the Development of Agent Systems

    Agent-based computing is an active field of research with the goal of building autonomous software of hardware entities. This task is often facilitated by the use of dedicated, specialized frameworks. For almost thirty years, many such agent platforms have been developed. Meanwhile, some of them have been abandoned, others continue their development and new platforms are released. This paper presents a up-to-date review of the existing agent platforms and also a historical perspective of this domain. It aims to serve as a reference point for people interested in developing agent systems. This work details the main characteristics of the included agent platforms, together with links to specific projects where they have been used. It distinguishes between the active platforms and those no longer under development or with unclear status. It also classifies the agent platforms as general purpose ones, free or commercial, and specialized ones, which can be used for particular types of applications.Comment: 40 pages, 2 figures, 9 tables, 83 reference

    Distributed Hybrid Simulation of the Internet of Things and Smart Territories

    This paper deals with the use of hybrid simulation to build and compose heterogeneous simulation scenarios that can be proficiently exploited to model and represent the Internet of Things (IoT). Hybrid simulation is a methodology that combines multiple modalities of modeling/simulation. Complex scenarios are decomposed into simpler ones, each one being simulated through a specific simulation strategy. All these simulation building blocks are then synchronized and coordinated. This simulation methodology is an ideal one to represent IoT setups, which are usually very demanding, due to the heterogeneity of possible scenarios arising from the massive deployment of an enormous amount of sensors and devices. We present a use case concerned with the distributed simulation of smart territories, a novel view of decentralized geographical spaces that, thanks to the use of IoT, builds ICT services to manage resources in a way that is sustainable and not harmful to the environment. Three different simulation models are combined together, namely, an adaptive agent-based parallel and distributed simulator, an OMNeT++ based discrete event simulator and a script-language simulator based on MATLAB.
